Our bright and talented Urban Park Rangers are what make our Weekend Adventure programs so amazing. This fall we are featuring some of our Ranger’s favorite experiences. From stunning wildlife viewing to behind-the-scenes access, these programs are not to be missed.

Inwood Hill Park continues to have a vivid connection to the native people of this country. The Rangers will guide you to historic sites within the park and discuss the culture of the Lenape people. Participants will learn about their daily customs, their knowledge of the forest, and sample forest-sourced food items, which were the staples of a Lenape diet.

Registration is required, and participants will be selected through a lottery. To register, please visit www.nyc.gov/parks/rangers/register on Wednesday, November 5th.

Hiking is the ultimate way to enjoy the outdoors and reduce stress. Regardless of the intensity level, it is a great way to burn calories and stay fit. Our Urban Park Ranger hiking guides will introduce you to the hidden gems of New York City.

On Nature exploration hikes we will discover the plants and animals that inhabit the urban forest. Hiking programs feature intensity levels ranging from light (leisurely stroll on mostly paved paths), to moderate (longer, faster-paced hikes on rugged terrain), to vigorous (long distance, with hills and rugged terrain).

For all hiking programs we recommend wearing comfortable shoes or boots, and packing water and a light snack.

Historian of science Lukas Rieppel will briefly present his research on dinosaur displays in natural history museums as a kind of “mixed media sculpture.” Looking into the history of the American Museum of Natural History, Rieppel has compellingly examined the aesthetic considerations behind natural history display and the social criteria underlying them. He will also lead a panel discussion with three artists from “Recapturing the Scenic Wilds” who share his interests in the artistic capture of nature. Richard Barnes’ camera catches the diorama off-guard, while it’s under repair or in transit. Using real feathers and braided fur, Hugh Hayden makes nature a luxury. Lori Nix’s pictures of miniature displays insert a macabre humor into natural history. Please RSVP at visualarts@wavehill.org.

Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

Level 2 programs are for those who want to focus on a more advanced fitness regimen. These exercises are done from a standing position or while lying on the floor or mat. These activities are minimally modified and you must be able to move from a standing position to the floor or mat independently.

Our wellness programs are a 22 to 24-week format, and incorporate a holistic approach to promote wellness of mind, body and spirit. Classes will employ similar modalities of movement like yoga, Pilates and aerobic exercise. Guest classes on Reiki, stress management, tai chi and other subjects will provide an enhanced, comprehensive experience for all participants. All classes are designed to tone and strengthen muscles, with a focus on strength and cardiovascular fitness. Light weights and exercise bands are often used.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels. Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

The Bronx Latin AMerican Art Biennial presents the exhibition Open For Discussion. Art by Eduardo Terranova, Marylin Caminero, Pablo Caviede, Yarisa Colon, Josue Guarionex, Elizabeth Moreno, Delilah Montoya, Justo Carreras, Alejandro Epifanio, Jose Ortiz, Yehimar Abyssys, Carolina Bermudez, Melissa Calderon, Wanda Cotorreal, Martita Ibanez, Jonas Hidalgo.

The exhibition suggests that art discussion is inherently an expression of populism and protest; therefore it is important not to deny the mass attraction to it, but to recognize its communicative power.

High Line Art presents Pier 54, an exhibition conceived as a tribute to and a reaction against Pier 18, a legendary project organized by artist and curator Willoughby Sharp in 1971. For its original iteration, Sharp invited 27 artists to create an event or an action to take place on the abandoned Pier 18 in the Financial District of New York City. Artists responded in a variety of ways: some carried out performances, others created sculptures and installations or sent simple instructions for do-it-yourself works to be executed by someone else. All the events were photographed by artists Harry Shunk and János Kender, and subsequently exhibited in photographic form at the Museum of Modern Art in the summer of 1971. Among the participants – who, in keeping with a largely gender-biased art world at the time, happened to be all male – were Vito Acconci, John Baldessari, Jan Dibbets, Dan Graham, Gordon Matta-Clark, Mario Merz, Allen Ruppersberg, Richard Serra, William Wegman, and many others.

Both a re-enactment and an exercise in historical revisionism, Pier 54 took place during the summer of 2014 on Hudson River Park’s Pier 54 – a disused pier located at 11th Avenue and West 13th Street. The pier is visible from the High Line and preserves many historical memories and architectural vestiges of Manhattan’s West Side, a neighborhood that has been swiftly transformed in the past decades. High Line Art invited 27 contemporary artists – this time all women – to realize projects that respond to the location and engage with the changing landscape of the waterfront.
