Born and raised in Washington Heights, Jerry Garcia, Jonathan Garcia, Jeffrey Cruz, Aneudy Hernandez and Diego Capellan formed Bachata Heightz to explore their musical interests while staying off the streets. The group was inspired by the tropical music of their Dominican roots as well as Hip-Hop and R&B. Combining these varying sounds, Bachata Heightz highlights their Latin heritage yet incorporates modern beats. As one of the first pioneers of this unique sound, they showcased it on their recording debut with Hector Acosta on “Me Puedo Matar,” which reached the top five on the Billboard Latin Tropical chart. Soon after, they released their inaugural full-length album, The First featuring the singles “Te Busco” and “No Sabes Del Amor,” becoming one of most influential groups in the Latin music scene.

Acclaimed impresario of non-traditional theater Randy Weiner and director Alfred Preisser team up for a hip-hop themed theater remake of the classic story, “King Kong,” a totally original music/dance/comedy spectacle that radically subverts everything you thought you knew about one of the most famous love stories of all time. Set in the “Bronx is Burning” era of the late 1970s, SummerStage's “King Kong” celebrates the nascent forms of hip-hop music and graffiti art that grew out of the economically stressed South Bronx and went on to become one of the defining, most powerful and profitable artistic movements in the world.

The Gold brothers, the owners of a failing R&B label (Gold Records) are in search of a musical savior. Having heard of a mystic place, a lost world cut off from the rest of civilization by the East River to the south and the Cross Bronx Expressway to the north and enshrouded in the fog of a thousand apartment building fires set by absentee landlords, the legendary South Bronx of 1978 is also the home of the most talented artist alive. Kong is an M.C. and natural genius of rhyme and rhythm whose awesome powers transcend artificial categories and defy the crass and hackneyed formulas of the commercial music industry. In hot pursuit of Kong, the Gold brothers hire a beautiful secretary, Faye Wellington, and go off to capture this force of nature in order to profit from Kong's gifts and share his music with a world desperately in need of inspiration. They load up the Gold family Volvo and journey to deepest, darkest South Bronx to capture Kong and bring him to civilization.

SummerStage Theatre, in collaboration with Preisser and Weiner, have created a fun, outrageous, and thoroughly entertaining work that will be not only be a unique and exciting experience but also a twisted and insightful treatment of the racial stereotypes inherent in the “King Kong” story.

The Randall’s Island Park Alliance, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Made Event are pleased to present FLOW, the annual summer art exhibit along the shoreline at Randall’s Island Park in New York City. FLOW is aimed at fostering appreciation of the shoreline through artistic expression, while calling visitors to interact with and care for the Park’s island environment. Each year, FLOW features five site specific projects by participants in the Bronx Museum’s Artists in the Marketplace (AIM) program for emerging artists.

Randall’s Island Park is a unique and remarkable waterfront resource, located in the East River with views of the Queens, Bronx and Manhattan shorelines. New waterfront pathways run along the 4.5-mile shoreline, which includes almost 9 acres of restored salt marsh and freshwater wetlands. The Park also offers a track & field stadium, a golf center, a 20-court tennis center and dozens of new playing fields, as well as the Harlem River Event Site, home of Made Event’s Electric Zoo, a three-day Labor Day weekend concert event at Randall’s Island which draws local and international DJ artists and audience.

FLOW.13 – this year's third annual exhibition – will be open to the public every day from June-November, and will feature five new site-specific installations, all reflecting and encouraging interaction with the Park’s history and environment. The five installations are located along the southern shoreline of Randall's Island Park.

FLOW is made possible through support from Made Event, proud producers of The Electric Zoo Festival, NYC’s largest electronic dance music festival, held annually at Randall’s Island Park.

The FLOW exhibitions express the confluence of art, music and environment at Randall’s Island Park, in the midst of one of the world’s greatest cities.

Van Cortlandt House Museum invites children to come along on a weeklong discovery of history in their backyard at the “Adventures in Time” Summer History Camp.

While on their “Adventure in Time” at Van Cortlandt House, campers will discover the everyday life of an 18th century child as they play the Van Cortlandt children’s favorite games, try on period clothing, and make 18th century toys. Campers will also lend a hand with plantation chores such as churning butter, gathering wood and hauling water.

“Adventures in Time” will also explore the early years of the Revolutionary War as campers become soldiers in General George Washington’s army. All aspects of military life will be covered from “enlisting” in the army, for which they will receive a bonus, to pitching a wedge tent and setting up camp. Campers will also learn military drills, and hike up to the top of Vault Hill on reconnaissance just like their 18th century counterparts who were stationed at the Van Cortlandt’s plantation during the Revolutionary War.

Campers must bring their own brown bag lunch each day but snacks and water are provided.

"Adventures in Time" Summer History Camp is open to all children with a sense of adventure who have completed 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th grade in the Spring of 2013. We encourage early enrollment, as camp space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis. To enroll, call Van Cortlandt House Museum or e-mail for a camp application.

The Land Art Generator Initiative: Freshkills Park is an exhibition of the top 25 designs selected out of 250 submissions from around the globe by artists, architects, designers, engineers, landscape architects, and more. LAGI 2012 was an ideas competition to design a site-specific public artwork that, in addition to its conceptual beauty, has the ability to harness energy cleanly from nature and convert it into electricity for the utility grid. At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in over 100 years. The transformation of what was formerly the world’s largest landfill into a productive and beautiful cultural destination will make the park a symbol of renewal and an expression of how our society can restore balance to its landscape. The top three submissions not only heighten the beauty of the surrounding park land but also provide a gateway into a greater discussion about the preservation of the environment.

Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre.

Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass.

Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre’s Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.

The CityParks PuppetMobile is the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

7:00 PM – All Levels Open Dance Master Class by: Cecilia Marta
8:00 PM – Performances

Francesca Harper blends original choreography, dance, music and film to create groundbreaking works that are category-defying. Harper has performed in several Broadway productions including: Fosse, The Producers, The Frogs, and The Color Purple. The Oakland Tribune says “Harper, who has the physique of a modern goddess, had the audience on the edge of its seats.” She has choreographed works for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ailey II, Tanz Graz, and her own company The Francesca Harper Project, which aspires to create a unique style – classical dance forms, deconstructed and fused with cutting-edge text, music, and film. The content of the pieces are rooted in her most fundamental themes: creation, imperfection, love, humanity, race, sexuality, politics, and identity. The Francesca Harper Project embraces and celebrates the spirit of diversity and individuality.

Conceived, choreographed and directed by Francesca Harper, Modo Fusion: Art Prototype is an hour-long exploration through the world of beauty pageants, using a surreal blend of original dance, music, film and narration.

Master Class: Come join Cecilia Marta in discovering the richness of World Jazz and embody it's instinctual rhythms and sensual organic flow.

“Diablo Love” is a fantastical love story featuring live music that re-imagines songs made famous by American Blues singer, guitarist and harmonica player, Howlin' Wolf along with original compositions by Tomás Doncker. This production provides audiences with a masterful live soundtrack of Blues/Soul music and sets the stage for a dynamic performance.

What would you do for love? In the dark alleys of Hell's Kitchen, Smoke, a lost soul, finds himself face to face with Mephi, the demon devil he made a deal with two years prior. She's there to collect his soul. In order to spare his own horrific demise, Smoke must find a willing person to swap spots with him, and as a result comes upon Emma, a fledgling Harlem Gospel singer from a troubled background with big dreams of fame. As Emma works through the trials and tribulations of erecting a career with her group, Smoke appears with big promises and a plan for fame and fortune. The two embark on a joint quest to achieve both of their missions, and what once began as a task for Smoke to find his replacement quickly takes a complicated turn as he must decide between unconditional love and Diablo love.
