Each winter, Wave Hill opens Glyndor Gallery as workspace for New York-area artists, giving them the unique opportunity to explore the winter landscape as a source of inspiration. Artists share aspects of their practice and engagement with Wave Hill through hands-on workshops. Workshops begin in Glyndor Gallery with an introduction to the artist’s work, then continue in the Ecology Building or Wave Hill House for the creative activity.

During the Winter Workspace, Chad Stayrook continues his exploratory narrative video series, creating four short videos that respond to “place”, featuring an interplanetary explorer who could only survive in cold winter weather. In this workshop, learn to build sculptures as big as your house with materials you can find in your closet, as Stayrook teaches a technique to bind plastic sheets (garbage bags) together with the use of wax paper and an iron. Participants will work on their own unique shape. At the end, the group will combine all the forms into one giant sculpture that is inflated with a simple fan.

Visitors aged 12 and over are welcome when accompanied by an adult. Newcomers and practicing artists alike are welcome.

Great Outdoors showcases over thirty artworks from the Museum of American Illustration’s collection that depict the vast indulgences of outdoor life, including recreational sports, ice skating, biking, and quiet contemplation. Did you know that the north end of Central Park has a rich history that includes the British having been stationed here during the American Revolution, and American troops stationed there during the War of 1812? Recent archaeological and historical investigations in the area have revealed even more information about how the "Fort Landscape" was used in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, before this area was part of Central Park. This season, join our guides and learn the history of this part of the park, get insight into the studies in the area, and appreciate the recent restorations undertaken by the Conservancy.

Highlights of this tour include McGowan's Pass, Fort Clinton, Nutter's Battery, and the Harlem Meer.

The tour route involves many hills and stairs, and some uneven terrain. Tour starts at Charles A. Dana Discovery Center (inside the park at 110th Street between Fifth and Lenox Avenues), and ends near the park perimeter at 106th Street and Fifth Avenue.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” The installation consists of previously and newly acquired works, all from the original Gracie Mansion period, which have been curated to create a more historically accurate picture of life in New York City during the time of Gracie Mansion’s construction.

To RSVP for tour, please go to: on.nyc.gov/gracietour.

Currently, Gracie Mansion is not offering group tours. If you are part of a private organization that would like to tour the house, please email your request, including the size of group, your name and the purpose of a tour, to gracieinfo@cityhall.nyc.gov, and we will work to add you to one of the currently scheduled tours.

Amazing forms and nuanced colors that mix and match beautifully have made succulents the rage in horticulture in recent years. Katherine Tracey will share some of her favorite ways to use both hardy and tender succulents in northeastern gardens, including mixed planters, vertical gardens and floral arrangements. Trained as a painter and textile designer, she has long been experimenting with the unexpected at Avant Gardens, a nationally known mail-order nursery and garden design/build firm in Dartmouth, MA.

This is the last of Wave Hill’s three 2016 Horticultural Lectures, a winter series hosted by the Friends of Horticulture Committee and devoted to the subject of garden design and the meaning of our interactions with plants and the natural world. This year’s series has been generously underwritten by Sarah Peter. They are held at the New York School of Interior Design.

Guided Tours at 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m., 4 p.m., and 6:30 p.m.

Join us for a back-stairs tour of the Merchant’s House and explore the world of the Irish immigrants who worked as domestic servants for the Tredwell family.

You’ll climb the narrow staircase to the fourth-floor servants’ quarters and see where the Tredwells’ four Irish servants lived and did some of their work, “arguably the oldest intact site of Irish habitation in New York City” (Time Out New York). In the kitchen, you’ll meet 19-year-old Bridget Murphy, who worked for the Tredwells in the 1850s. What did the servants do on their day off? Where did they shop? Where did they go to to church? How did they find employment when they first arrived? Bridget will tell you why it would have been impossible to run a home like the Merchant’s House without her.

Included with General Admission. Reservations not required.

Illustration has been linked to the printed word for centuries. The art form crosses cultures, class, time, and education, giving visual form to the otherwise unimaginable.

Great Outdoors showcases over thirty artworks from the Museum of American Illustration’s collection that depict the vast indulgences of outdoor life, including recreational sports, ice skating, biking, and quiet contemplation. The show features illustrations originally published in books, magazines and weeklies from the Golden Age of Illustration (1880-1920) through 2014.
