In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” The installation consists of previously and newly acquired works, all from the original Gracie Mansion period, which have been curated to create a more historically accurate picture of life in New York City during the time of Gracie Mansion’s construction.

Amazing forms and nuanced colors that mix and match beautifully have made succulents the rage in horticulture in recent years. Katherine Tracey will share some of her favorite ways to use both hardy and tender succulents in northeastern gardens, including mixed planters, vertical gardens and floral arrangements. Trained as a painter and textile designer, she has long been experimenting with the unexpected at Avant Gardens, a nationally known mail-order nursery and garden design/build firm in Dartmouth, MA.

This is the last of Wave Hill’s three 2016 Horticultural Lectures, a winter series hosted by the Friends of Horticulture Committee and devoted to the subject of garden design and the meaning of our interactions with plants and the natural world. This year’s series has been generously underwritten by Sarah Peter. They are held at the New York School of Interior Design.

Guided Tours at 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m., 4 p.m., and 6:30 p.m.

Join us for a back-stairs tour of the Merchant’s House and explore the world of the Irish immigrants who worked as domestic servants for the Tredwell family.

You’ll climb the narrow staircase to the fourth-floor servants’ quarters and see where the Tredwells’ four Irish servants lived and did some of their work, “arguably the oldest intact site of Irish habitation in New York City” (Time Out New York). In the kitchen, you’ll meet 19-year-old Bridget Murphy, who worked for the Tredwells in the 1850s. What did the servants do on their day off? Where did they shop? Where did they go to to church? How did they find employment when they first arrived? Bridget will tell you why it would have been impossible to run a home like the Merchant’s House without her.

This spring, the Public Theater’s Mobile Unit will tour Shakespeare’s timeless tale of Romeo and Juliet to communities across New York City, including many NYC Parks locations. In some of the most romantic language ever written for the stage, young Romeo and Juliet become fortune’s fools when the ancient grudge between their families forces them to sacrifice all for the chance to be together. Obie Award winner Lear de Bessonet directs the classic tale of star-crossed lovers caught between the world outside the bedroom window and passion as boundless as the sea.

The Public Theater’s mission to make theater accessible to all, as exemplified by free Shakespeare in the Park, is expanded upon by the Mobile Unit, which strengthens community engagement with the arts by bringing free, world-class productions of Shakespeare to recreation centers, correctional facilities, homeless shelters, social advocacy organizations, and other places of community gathering in all five boroughs.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

Please note: Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees and when there are icy conditions.

Jensen will team up with BBP Horticulture Supervisor Rashid Poulson to lead a collection-building walk along BBP’s East River shoreline. The walk will begin and end at 99 Plymouth in the Main Street section of Brooklyn Bridge Park, where The Wonder Under is currently on view. Along the way, the group will assemble a collection of objects, flora and artifacts found in the park and along the shore. Throughout the walk, Jensen will discuss his site-specific artistic practice and how he uses collection-building, walking and photography to create works about place. The walk will pause at certain points where Poulson will discuss what is growing and the decisions behind the planting selection. RSVP here!

Each winter, Wave Hill opens Glyndor Gallery as workspace for New York-area artists, giving them the unique opportunity to explore the winter landscape as a source of inspiration. Artists share aspects of their practice and engagement with Wave Hill through hands-on workshops. Workshops begin in Glyndor Gallery with an introduction to the artist’s work, then continue in the Ecology Building or Wave Hill House for the creative activity.

During the Winter Workspace, Sindy Butz will continue research on two video projects, one that is focused on the Palisades and the other on 11th-century German nun St. Hildegard von Bingen and her medicinal study of rocks and botanicals. This workshop will encourage the examination of two very different histories and traditions, providing participants with the opportunity to learn about Saint Hildegard of Bingen, and Butoh, a meditative Japanese dance form that involves very slow, intense movements. Learn more about Butoh and practice guided imagery and meditative movement techniques that Sindy Butz uses in her own art performances and training. In celebration of the vernal equinox, end a cold winter with joy and make the transition into spring with consciousness, then enjoy a cup of tea from a recipe inspired by Saint Hildegard.

Visitors ages 12 and over are welcome when accompanied by an adult. Newcomers and practicing artists alike are welcome.
