Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

Since ancient times, Irish cooking has been a simple, hearty cuisine full of tradition and strong ties to the land. Throughout the turbulent tale of Irish history, Irish cooking and its star ingredient, the potato, have taken culinary hard knocks, yet the cuisine emerges triumphant in its ability to coax exceptional flavor from natural ingredients with the simplest of preparations.

In celebration of the Tredwells’ Irish servants, we will examine the true history of Irish food and its well-deserved and celebrated modern renaissance. Professionally trained chef and Merchant’s House tour guide Carl Raymond offers a discussion of Irish cooking over the past 400 years with a focus on the 19th century and the lives of the Irish servants who once worked in the Merchant’s House, as well as a cooking demonstration and tasting. Two of Ireland’s classic dishes will be prepared: a rich Colcannon soup with potato and cabbage and an authentic meat and Guinness stew. In addition, modern culinary tips and techniques on preparing these classic dishes will be demonstrated. The presentation will take place in the original kitchen where the servants worked and will be accompanied by a choice of Guinness or wine. Each guest will receive a recipe booklet to take home.

The annual Emerging Artist Fellowship (EAF) Exhibition is a cornerstone of Socrates Sculpture Park’s visual arts programming and is widely acclaimed for the ambition, breadth, and innovation of the works on view. Featuring fifteen artists, EAF14 is a survey of the compelling and diverse state of sculpture today.

Each EAF14 artist has engaged with the larger narrative of public space in a dynamic and daring way, building upon Socrates Sculpture Park’s goal to present socially aware, inspiring art in the public realm. EAF14 artists were selected through a highly competitive process that attracted a broad field of nearly 300 candidates, reviewed by the park’s curatorial advisors Anne Barlow (Executive Director, Art in General) and Joe Sheftel (Joe Sheftel Gallery, New York). Selected EAF14 artists were awarded a 2014 Emerging Artist Fellowship, including 24/7 access to the park’s outdoor studio and facilities, as well as the financial, technical, and curatorial support to realize his or her most ambitious work possible.

Please note: this event has been cancelled.

The Arts, Culture & Fun series presents The Lives of Hamilton Fish.

- Art Exhibit March 2 - 31, 2015

- Film Screening March 28, 2015

On January 16, 1936 the deaths of two famous men were printed on the front page of the Peekskill Evening Star. The two men shared the name Hamilton Fish. One was a notorious killer Hamilton "Albert" Fish and the other, Hamilton Fish II, a beloved statesman. This coincidence was discovered by artist Rachel Mason who was inspired to create an opera and feature film called The Lives of Hamilton Fish.

Scenes in the film were shot at historic sites in New York State and amazingly, The Hamilton Fish Recreation Center was completed in 1936, the same year that the two men died. To coincide with the film's New York City debut which will happen in March 2015, The Hamilton Fish Recreation Center will present a special exhibition of Mason's storyboard sketches, props, paintings and research.

In addition to the exhibition, the center will host a screening on Saturday, March 28 at 3:00 p.m.

NYC Parks is pleased to present the exhibition: “Native Ensemble: Artists Chronicle Staten Island’s Natural Spaces”, featuring local Staten Island artists that will run from February 13 – March 29, 2015, with an opening reception on Thursday, February 12th from 7-9 p.m. in the Lenape Gallery at the Conference House Park Visitor Center. The exhibition is curated by Sarah Yuster.

The eight artists featured in the show: David DiLillo, Ann Marie McDonnell, Michael McWeeney, Gail Middleton, Bill Murphy, Kristi Pfister, Melissa West and Sarah Yuster will present inspired 2-D and 3-D works created in a variety of art mediums that explore Staten Island’s natural elements and open spaces in conventional and unconventional techniques. Allusions to the human narrative in these works give way in an effort to shape the poetic and elusive concept of time and nature.

Lenape Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. For additional information please contact Frank Gessner at (718) 227-1463.

Featuring fifteen artists, EAF14 is a survey of the compelling and diverse state of sculpture today.

In conjunction with the Arsenal Gallery exhbiition "Conserving Our City of Nature:The Artwork of Alan Messer." Dr. Susan B. Elbin and Debra Kriensky from NYC Audubon will host a lecture about their educational and conservation initiatives. NYC Audubon has worked for over 30 years to protect wild birds and their habitat in the five boroughs, through public outreach and advocacy, educational programming, and scientific research.

Many New Yorkers are unaware of the 350 species of wild birds—almost a third of all bird species in North America—that live in or pass through New York City each year. Artist Alan Messer skillfully captures many, from exquisite migrating Blackburnian Warblers in Central Park’s ramble to a Northern Harrier scanning the vast marshes of Jamaica Bay.

"Conserving Our City of Nature: The Artwork of Alan Messer" presented by NYC Audubon reveals over 30 of Messer’s detailed paintings, illustrations, and field sketches of New York City's avian wildlife and habitats, offering a view of NYC Audubon's conservation mission through an artistic eye.

Please note: Admission is free but space is limited. To RSVP, email artandantiquities@parks.nyc.gov.

NYC Audubon’s director of conservation and science, Dr. Susan Elbin is an ornithologist who has worked in the field of behavioral ecology and conservation for more than 25 years. Susan’s specialties are avian behavioral ecology and conservation of colonial waterbirds. She is co-chair of the Harbor Herons Subcommittee within the Harbor Estuary Program and is president of the Waterbird Society. Susan is an adjunct professor at Columbia University where she teaches courses in ornithology and migration ecology.

Debra Kriensky is a conservation biologist at NYC Audubon. She began there as an intern studying horseshoe crab and shorebird populations in Jamaica Bay while pursuing her Master’s degree in conservation biology at Columbia University.

This ongoing series is hosted by Wave Hill’s Friends of Horticulture Committee and is devoted to landscape design and the meaning of our interactions with plants and the natural world.

Horticulturist Ed Bowen takes a plant-centric look at ornamentals, examining past use, and offering suggestions and strategies for ensuring their continued viability and relevance.

Described by garden writer Tovah Martin as “the seminal plant nerd,” Bowen explores the intersection of plants and commerce, including how nursery production practices affect garden center offerings, and vice versa. He founded and owns Opus Plants, a deliberately small nursery in Little Compton, Rhode Island, where he propagates plants.

This is the last of Wave Hill’s 2015 Horticultural Lectures.

Conserving Our City of Nature: The Artwork of Alan Messer presented by NYC Audubon reveals over 30 of Messer’s detailed paintings, illustrations, and field sketches of New York City's avian wildlife and habitats, offering a view of NYC Audubon's conservation mission through an artistic eye.
