Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre.

Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass.

Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre’s Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.

The CityParks PuppetMobile is the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

Jon Batiste was born in New Orleans into a family whose deep musical heritage is part of the inspiration for the HBO series Treme, in which he has appeared. Over the last decade he has forged his own artistic path by indelibly fusing himself within the fabric of New York City culture. After attending the prestigious New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) Batiste moved to New York and graduated from the Juilliard School earning a master’s degree in jazz and classical piano. He has collaborated with the likes of Prince, Cassandra Wilson, Lauryn Hill, Wynton Marsalis, Jimmy Buffet, Eve, Lenny Kravitz, ?uestlove, and Asher Roth.

He has also recorded extensively, most recently putting out the EP MY NY with Stay Human in 2011, a set that was recorded live in the Manhattan subway system. Social Music (Razor & Tie), is the new album by Batiste and his irrepressible musical collective, Stay Human. Both the title of the album and the name of the band are telling. “For me, what we’re doing is a calling, bringing people to an understanding that loving one another is how we are called to be,” he says. Now a quartet (with Batiste on piano, vocals and melodica, which he has renamed the harmonaboard; Eddie Barbash on alto saxophone; Ibanda Ruhumbika on tuba; and Joe Saylor on drums), Stay Human has evolved over the past eight years, running the spectrum from a jazz trio to a quintet to a big band with horns.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is a family of 8 blood brothers, sons of jazz trumpeter/composer Phil Cohran (Sun Ra, co-founder of AACM, mentor to EARTH WIND & FIRE), who were raised on the south-side of Chicago under the rigorous training methods their musically talented parents. From an early age it was clear the brothers of Hypnotic were born for the stage, they grew at the feet of music giants such as Louis Satterfield, Sun Ra, & Pete Cosey while at the same time performing as children along with father at local showcases. By 1999, a few of the older members returned from music scholarships at college to find their younger brothers playing on the streets of Chicago to rave success. They subsequently formed the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and after finding a drummer, began to collectively write original tunes in order to create a record with their very own sound "The Flipside". Initially their only aim was to bring horns and live instrumentation back to mainstream music, but after taking to the streets of United States' major cities HBE enjoyed the independent success of over 65,000 units sold direct to fans and also attracted the attention of Kanye West mentor NO ID. In 2003, Hypnotic cut the horns for his current production "Metal Lungees" that featured on Wu-Tang MC Ghostface Killah's "Pretty Toney" album for Def Jam Island. At the same time HBE had begun to record & self-produce their sophomore effort "Jupiter", and when a Def Jam Records production deal went sour the band moved to NYC to promote and sale their latest project solo.

Hamish Linklater and Tony® nominee Lily Rabe return to the Park this summer as the wise-cracking, would-be lovers Beatrice and Benedick in the beloved romantic comedy Much Ado About Nothing. Central Park becomes sun-drenched Sicily at the turn of the last century, where the heat of summer ignites the fevered passions of lovesick ladies in corsets and pining gentlemen spying from the verandah. Three-time Tony winner Jack O’Brien directs this delightful skirmish of wit between two self-declared bachelors tricked by their mischief-making friends into falling in love against their will and in spite of their own hearts.

New York's most treasured summer tradition, Free Shakespeare in the Park, celebrates its 52nd season in Central Park's famous Delacorte Theater. Love and madness, laughter and tragedy combine for a uniquely thrilling season of exciting theater and exceptional performances under the stars. Join over 5 million people who have enjoyed The Public Theater's free performances and experience the heights of romance and the depths of duplicity in a setting unlike any other, in the heart of Manhattan.

Free tickets to the 2014 season will once again be distributed in the Park, online via the Virtual Ticketing Lottery, and in the five boroughs of New York City. For more info on getting tickets, visit the Shakespeare in the Park tickets page.

Rockaway!, a free public arts festival sponsored by the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) to celebrate the reopening of Fort Tilden and recognize the ongoing recovery of the Rockaway peninsula, opens June 29 and continues through September 1, 2014. Invited by the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA), an association of artists based in and around the Rockaways, and the JBRPC, MoMA PS1 has assisted and supported the conception of this festival.

One component of the festival is a group exhibition organized in collaboration with the Honolulu Biennial on the grounds of the newly restored Rockaway Beach Surf Club on Beach 87th Street in Rockaway Beach. Following Hurricane Sandy, the Surf Club was the one of the largest relief centers on the peninsula; their organization facilitated and directed over 5,000 volunteers, with major contributions from MoMA PS1. The exhibition celebrates the efforts of the Rockaway community of surfers and artists in rebuilding their neighborhood.

COUNTING CROWS is one of those bands you follow for the long haul. For those that first heard them opening for Bob Dylan long ago, or subbing for Van Morrison one memorable night at the rock and Roll Hall of Fame, much of the soundtrack of our times comes from the Crows – from their vivid musical landscapes as well as the feverish brilliance of singer/songwriter Adam Duritz. COUNTING CROWS hails from the San Francisco Bay area and consist of Adam Duritz (vocals), David Bryson (guitar), Charles Gillingham (keyboards), Dan Vickrey (guitar), Jim Bogios (drums), and Millard Powers (bass). COUNTING CROWS success dates back to their 1993 debut release August and Everything After and the hit single “Mr. Jones.” The band recently hit #1 with the song “Accidentally In Love,” which was featured on the Shrek 2 soundtrack, as well as nominations in 2005 for a Grammy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award for the track. COUNTING CROWS has sold over 20 million records worldwide.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

For details and times of the rest of the exhibit, please visit the Rockaway! website.

An enchanting evening of favorite opera arias and duets featuring rising Metropolitan Opera stars.

Mary-Jane Lee (soprano) is in her first year of the Met’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. Most recently, she was featured as Parasha in Mavra, as part of a co-production of the Met and the Juilliard School, conducted by James Levine. She has received awards from the Met’s National Council Auditions, the Licia Albanese–Puccini Foundation Vocal Competition, the Palm Beach Opera Vocal Competition, and the Dallas Opera Guild Competition.

Ginger Costa-Jackson (mezzo-soprano) is a graduate of the Met’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program and a Samling Scholar. She made her Met debut in the Opening Night Gala of the 2008–09 season and has since appeared in the Met premiere of Nixon in China, new productions of Thaïs and Manon, and in Cavalleria Rusticana, Lulu, La Fanciulla del West, Carmen, and Francesca da Rimini. Next season, she will appear in Xavier Montsalvatge’s El Gato con Botas with Gotham Chamber Opera in New York and return to the Met as Lola in a new production of Cavalleria Rusticana.

Yunpeng Wang (baritone) is in his first year of the Met’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. <![CDATA[SummerStage Presents Beck]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/07/01/summerstage-presents-beck http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/07/01/summerstage-presents-beck Date: July 1, 2014

Beck has traveled light years from being pegged as a reluctant generational spokesperson when “Loser” metamorphosed from a rejected demo to a ubiquitous smash. Instead he wound up crystallizing much of the post-modern ruckus of the ‘90s alternative explosion, but in his own unpredictable manner: Beck’s singular career has been one that’s seen him utilize all manners and eras of music, blurring boundaries and blazing a path into the future while simultaneously foraging through the past.

Surfacing just as alternative rock went mainstream, no small thanks to his 1994 debut Mellow Gold, Beck quickly confounded expectations with subsequent releases including the lo-fi folk of One Foot in the Grave, delivered on the K imprint. But the album that truly cemented Beck’s place in the pantheon was 1996’s multi-platinum Odelay, that touched upon all of his obsessions, providing a cultural keystone for the decade from the indelible hook of “Devil’s Haircut” to the irresistible call and response of the anthemic “Where It’s At.”

From the world-tripping ballads and atmospherics of 1998′s Mutations and the florescent funk of 1999′s Midnite Vultures through the somber reflections of 2002′s Sea Change, 2005′s platinum tour de force Guero and 2006′s sprawling The Information, no Beck record has ever sounded like its predecessor. In the interim since his last album, 2008′s universally acclaimed Danger Mouse-produced Modern Guilt, Beck has eschewed the typical album/tour/repeat cycle of the music business. Instead, he has expanded his creative palette into such multi-media endeavors as a one-time-only live re-imagination of David Bowie’s “Sound and Vision” utilizing 160+ musicians in a 360-degree audiovisual production and Beck Hansen’s Song Reader, released December 2012 by McSweeney’s as 20 songs existing only as individual pieces of sheet music, never before released or recorded, complete with full-color original art for each song and a lavishly produced hardcover carrying case.

Beck’s relentless creative tide continued unabated throughout 2013 with three standalone singles released digitally and on 12-inch vinyl (“Defriended,” “I Won’t Be Long,” Gimme”), custom-created performances for Doug Aitken’s recent Station to Station series of transient happenings, a run of live shows–touted by reviewers the world over as among the very best of his career–and special Song Reader events in which Beck and eclectic line-ups brought the book to life in unforgettable evenings staged in only a handful of cities including in San Francisco, London, and most recently Disney Hall in Los Angeles.

And now Beck rolls into 2014 with the promise of not one but two new records. First up, and possibly the single most anticipated release of the new year, is Beck’s 12th album, Morning Phase. Likened by some to a companion piece of sorts to Beck’s 2002 masterpiece Sea Change, Morning Phase features many of the same musicians who played on that record–and who also currently accompany Beck live: Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Joey Waronker, Smokey Hormel, Roger Joseph Manning Jr., and Jason Falkner. Preceded by the sublime first single “Blue Moon” the stunning “Waking Light” and the recent live debuts of “Morning,” “Unforgiven” and “Wave,” Morning Phase harkens back to the stunning harmonies, classic Californian song craft and staggering emotional impact of that record, while surging forward with infectious optimism.
