Hamish Linklater and Tony® nominee Lily Rabe return to the Park this summer as the wise-cracking, would-be lovers Beatrice and Benedick in the beloved romantic comedy Much Ado About Nothing. Central Park becomes sun-drenched Sicily at the turn of the last century, where the heat of summer ignites the fevered passions of lovesick ladies in corsets and pining gentlemen spying from the verandah. Three-time Tony winner Jack O’Brien directs this delightful skirmish of wit between two self-declared bachelors tricked by their mischief-making friends into falling in love against their will and in spite of their own hearts.

New York's most treasured summer tradition, Free Shakespeare in the Park, celebrates its 52nd season in Central Park's famous Delacorte Theater. Love and madness, laughter and tragedy combine for a uniquely thrilling season of exciting theater and exceptional performances under the stars. Join over 5 million people who have enjoyed The Public Theater's free performances and experience the heights of romance and the depths of duplicity in a setting unlike any other, in the heart of Manhattan.

Free tickets to the 2014 season will once again be distributed in the Park, online via the Virtual Ticketing Lottery, and in the five boroughs of New York City. For more info on getting tickets, visit the Shakespeare in the Park tickets page.

Closely Knit: A Textile Analysis of Animals by Ruth Marshall brings attention to illegal wildlife trade and species loss in a way that unites a widened audience of scientists, art enthusiasts and the general public. Her life-size, knitted textile pelts of tigers, leopards, coral snakes and Australian marsupials exemplify how artisan goods have the potential to have higher commercial value than poached skins on the black market. Her textiles reinforce the ideology that support for conservation and culture is a more sustainable, viable and lucrative endeavor than the illegal wildlife trade.

She has conducted research at the American Museum of Natural History, Melbourne Museum and the Berlin Zoo. For Closely Knit, Marshall studied Askai, Central Park Zoo’s six-year-old male snow leopard and created a new knitted work based on his distinctive coat. The exhibition is staged in the historic Arsenal building, which housed a menagerie of gifted animals on the basement level from 1859 to 1871, and was the first home of the American Museum of Natural History from 1869 to 1877 before it moved to its current home on Manhattan’s West Side.

Award-winning tap dancer Jason Samuels Smith collaborates with renowned musician/singer/composer Owen "Fiidla" Brown to present an original composition of a highly anticipated musical response to the critically acclaimed film 12 Years A Slave. The piece was commissioned by The Charles & Joan Gross Family Foundation and debuted to a packed crowd at Lincoln Center's David Rubenstein Atrium on Mardi Gras earlier this year. The work, entitled “Transformation: Rhythm’s Roots,” is a celebration of the instrumentation and the natural musical evolution that transpired alongside the African-American experience in America. All ages will enjoy this musical journey...Rhythm is what connects us after all!

Jason Samuels Smith won an Emmy and American Choreography Award for his tribute to Gregory Hines and has performed and/or contributed choreography for Black Nativity, Idlewild, So You Think You Can Dance, Bring in Da'Noise, Bring in Da'Funk on Broadway, and Psych. Owen “Fiidla” Brown is a 26-year veteran of the Sun Ra Arkestra who has appeared alongside Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, George Clinton, Babatundi Olatunji (father of African drumming), Gil Scot Heron and more. Tyrone Brown (bassist) has worked with the likes of Max Roach, Grover Washington Jr, Dizzy Gillespie, and Pat Martino to name a few. Bill Meek (pianist) has played and recorded with world-renowned drummer, Philly Jo Jones, toured with Grover Washington Jr. and performed with Max Roach, Donald Byrd, Stanley Clarke, Cecil Bridgewater, John Blake, Gerald Veasley, Odean Pope, and is currently a member of the Grover Washington Jr. Tribute Band among others. Harry "Butch" Reed (drums) has toured with several well-known musicians including John Blake, The Onus, The Andrew Neu Group and The Electric Mingus Project.

Jamal Jackson was born in Brooklyn, New York and began his formal studies of movement with the Harlem based Batoto Yetu Dance Company. His pursuit of dance led him to Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he received the Weston Award for his contribution to the Fusion Dance Company and New Works/World Traditions African Dance Company from 1996-2000. Jamal studied with Michelle Bach-Coulibaly, Seydou Coulibaly, and Fred Benjami and worked under M’ba Coulibaly, Salimata Soumare from Kelete Dance Theatre, and Ba Issa Diallo, director of Troupe District du Bamako in Mali, West Africa. Jamal choreographed for the New York Arts Festival and Inaya Day in 2002, marking the beginning of his African based, modern style of movement. Jamal performed with Ballet International Africans for two seasons as a principal dancer and in 2004 he founded the Jamal Jackson Dance Company, which debuted Images of the Union at University Settlement in New York and at Westport Hall in Connecticut. Jamal Jackson Dance Company has established a strong presence in and out of New York City, performing year round in festivals, self-produced shows, community outreach programs and private events. The company has presented work at venues including: Mark Morris Dance Center, Jacob’s Pillow, SummerStage, DanceNow Festival, Dance Theater Workshop, Battery Downtown Dance Festival, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Brown University, Equality Now’s 20th Anniversary, Big Range Festival in Austin, TX, The Yard in Martha’s Vineyard, MA, and Performance Spaces for the 21st Century in Chatham, NY. The Philly-born singer-songwriter AMOS LEE, a “gentle genius” (Billboard) of R&B and country-inflected folk, hit his stride with last year’s Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song. His fifth release on Blue Note, it’s a record that “brims with introspection about life and love.” (Entertainment Weekly) Lee has often been compared to John Prine, Bill Withers, and Norah Jones, and much has been made of his one-time job teaching second grade. For all his made-for-mainstream-success backstory, TV placements, and relentlessly appealing voice (one NY Times critic designated it “light amber, mildly sweet, a touch of grain”), Lee has forged a career as a songwriter of great integrity and authenticity.

LAKE STREET DIVE, once of Boston and now of Brooklyn, are a captivating indie-pop-swing foursome whose knockout lead singer Rachel Price “has the soulful howl of a young Etta James.” (Daily News) The band, all graduates of the New England Conservatory of Music, has been together since 2005, but broke through seemingly overnight with a viral video of them covering the Jackson Five’s “I Want You Back” on a Boston street corner in 2013. Millions of views later, they have made the rounds of late night television from Colbert to Letterman and sold out a succession of increasingly bigger venues in a remarkable run of success that will eventually lead them who knows where but includes a stop along the way right here, on this one perfect night in June, in Brooklyn, under the stars.

Please note: on the 21st there will be an audio described performance.

Help water and care for the 110,000+ new street trees that have been planted across New York City! Join the MillionTreesNYC to give trees a little "Tree LC" and stewardship, and help keep New York City green by coming to a free MillionTreesNYC tree care workshop where you will learn:

  • What is MillionTreesNYC?
  • How to identify trees in New York City
  • Benefits trees bring to our city
  • Tree Care - Water! Weed! Mulch! Plant flowers!

Workshops are focused on active tree care, so come ready to get your hands dirty and care for street trees along the sidewalk. Please wear closed-toed shoes and layered clothing that can get dirty. Tree stewardship is similar to gardening work, involving bending and kneeling on the sidewalk. Children are always welcome, and must be accompanied by an adult. All participants will care for trees using small gardening tools and watering buckets. Please dress for light gardening work, wear close-toed shoes, and bring a refillable water bottle. All MillionTreesNYC events are rain or shine.
