Musical Ecologies is a new monthly symposium on music and sound held at the Old Stone House in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Curated and hosted by composer Dan Joseph, each event focuses on a single artist who presents a work or project either in the form of a talk or lecture, a multimedia presentation, a performance, or combination thereof. Each presentation is preceded by a 30-minute conversation with the curator and audience. Admission is by contribution and a reception will follow.

Eve Beglarian “is a humane, idealistic rebel and a musical sensualist.” “One of new music’s truly free spirits,” and a “remarkable experimentalist,” she is a composer, performer, and audio producer whose music is “an eclectic and wide-open series of enticements.”

Much of her recent music has been inspired by a four and a half month journey she took down the Mississippi River by kayak and bicycle in 2009, which is documented on her RiverBlog.

Come to Fort Tryon Park and try something new. Join us on Saturdays, Tuesday and Thursday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Rain and weather / air advisory cancels. Fitness programs are cancelled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. After years of being a gym rat, I've seen the light, so to speak. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

Gateway National Recreation Area presents “Hurricane Sandy: Before and After,” a photo exhibit featuring the effects of Hurricane Sandy on the park. The exhibit compares large scale satellite images from before the hurricane and photos taken afterward by National Park Service (NPS) employees so that the public can assess the damage to the park.

Post-storm photos were taken by NPS employees as part of the recovery effort. The large format—almost two by three feet—reveals the storm’s effects in great detail. Some of the most dramatic images are aerial shots taken from helicopters used by the team to survey the park.

The exhibit will be on display for the next several months in the Multi-Purpose Room at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, located at 100 Cross Bay Boulevard in Queens. The Visitor Center is open daily, free of charge, from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M.

Famous (Indian) Battles of the Muhheakantuck by Jason Lujan

Muhheakantuck, a Lenape word meaning "river that flows both ways," was the Indigenous name for what is now known as the Hudson River. Artist Jason Lujan presents ten prints based on 19th century, hand-tinted postcards and feudal Japanese scenic maps that examine the colonization of the Hudson River Valley. The series frames the region's contention for land and resources using an uncharacteristic vocabulary.

Jason Lujan is of Chiricahua Apache background and has lived in New York City since 2001. He has been included in multiple solo and group exhibitions, including the Kentler International Drawing Space, Exit Art, Museum of Contemporary Native Art in Santa Fe, and Museo Nacional de Culturas Populares in Mexico City. Jason's artwork is invested in language and motif to create a hybridization of traditional and contemporary elements seeking to advance an exploration between dialogue and styles that are not limited to their historical definitions.

The monuments in our parks honor the heights of human achievement and the depths of human sacrifice. They are intended in permanent form to commemorate persons, events and values of lasting consequence to the evolution of our city, nation and the world, and to our advancement as a people.

In honor of Black History Month, this exhibition examines those monuments in the Parks collection that honor key African-American figures in the arts, sport, the military, science, and the abolition movement and who are preserved in our collective memory. Also remembered are the many thousands of anonymous people who, until emancipation, did not have the rights of citizenship and were enslaved.

In the 1990s a number of visual artists (including Kara Walker, Glenn Ligon, and Ellen Driscoll) created art that used literary slave narratives as templates for their work. Slave narratives of the 19th century told the story of enslavement and escape from the perspective of those who had been enslaved themselves. Often the contemporary artists place themselves or viewers in the position of the ex-slave narrator. This lecture brings together contemporary "visual slave narratives" and classic slave narratives from the 19th century to examine the way black artists and writers respond to institutional constraints placed on their cultural production. Slave narratives, called a "black message in a white envelope" by one critic, were constrained by the goals and directives of white editors. However, ex-slave narrators found creative ways to circumvent this narrative containment. This lecture examines the "fugitive" meanings within slave narratives -- that which remain uncontained or challenge editorial constraints.

Janet Neary is an Assistant Professor of 19th-century African American literature and culture at Hunter College. She is currently at work on a manuscript entitled Fugitive Testimony: Race, Representation, and the Slave Narrative Form which examines slave narratives from the late 18th century to their emergence in visual art at the end of the 20th century.

This lecture is sponsored by the New York Council for the Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

From January 19 through February 24, visitors to The New York Botanical Garden this winter can escape to "Tropical Paradise," a showcase of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory’s permanent collection of tropical trees, flowers, and foliage, including orange-yellow crotons, fuschia bromeliads, and rosy-red hibiscus. Through self-guided strolls, use of a virtual smart phone tour, or participation in docent-led tours of the Conservatory offered daily at 12:30 p.m., visitors can encounter many surprises in the largest Victorian-style glasshouse in the country. Visitors can also enjoy a display of tropical photos from the International Garden Photographer of the Year competition and partake in photography lessons on Sundays. Children can participate in a scavenger hunt that begins in the Conservatory and continues in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden.

We connect children with nature to encourage active exploration of the natural world. Children who spend time outdoors develop strong imaginations and learn to socialize better with others. Urban Park Rangers are role models who encourage children to let their imaginations run wild in a safe, supportive atmosphere.

Whether enjoying a family friendly movie under the stars, freeing your imagination playing in nature, or learning about conservation through eco-crafts, a free Ranger program is the perfect addition to your family’s weekend. All supplies provided.
