Erin McKeown has been touring the globe for the last 12 years as a writer, performer, and multi-instrumentalist with eight full-length records and three EPs under her belt. McKeown’s compelling and energy-packed stage show teamed with her seemingly effortless ability to bridge genres has garnered her international acclaim. She regularly collaborates and performs with her peers Andrew Bird, Anais Mitchell, Ben Sollee, Carrie Rodriguez, Mike Doughty, Amos Lee, and Josh Ritter. She has also performed at many of the world’s esteemed music festivals including Bonnaroo, Newport Folk, Glastonbury, and Oxegen. “Her playing is so muscular, her arrangements so well conceived that she succeeds brilliantly. As with all truly great guitarists, the wonder is less in her chops than her choices,” (Boston Globe).

Lake Street Dive, composed of drummer Mike Calabrese, bassist Bridget Kearney, vocalist Rachael Price, and trumpet-wielding guitarist Mike “McDuck” Olson, encompasses a myriad of possibilities within its members’ collective experiences, and the resultant music is a vivid, largely acoustic, groove-driven strain of indie-pop. Lake Street Dive makes the most of pop music virtues: solid, evocative song craft; propulsive grooves; and Price’s disarming, forthright vocals. However, it’s a personal strain of pop that is refracted through the band members’ rich backgrounds: a sinewy Motown bass line is reborn with woody heft on Kearney’s upright, Calabrese’s drumming mixes timekeeping with more adventurous jazz-inflected outbursts, McDuck’s nimble trumpet is an unexpectedly warm counterpoint to Price’s singing. It all makes for a sound with familiar roots, but with a slant that is entirely their own.

Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form that has evolved over centuries into an exciting combination of martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. Capoeira was developed in Brazil, but its history extends to Africa and tribes from Angola. Slaves living on Brazilian Plantations who weren’t allowed to openly practice traditional forms of self-defense developed an ingenious method of disguising their training by combining it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments. Some of capoeira’s benefits include strength, flexibility, stamina, overall fitness and confidence. Benefits of capoeira for kids include promoting social interaction and sense of belonging, building confidence, discipline and self esteem, promoting a healthy lifestyle so children become active, and healthy, and develop cultural awareness and tolerance. Wear comfortable clothing.

The Persuasions, an A Capella group which humbly started out on the street corners of Brooklyn, proudly boast their forty plus years together with only its founding members. Often referred to the undisputed “Kings of A Capella,” this global phenomenon has a heavy influence of Gospel, Soul, with a healthy dose of Pop and has released 26 albums since their beginning in 1962. The group has infused classic songs with their own powerful style, often referred to as “Persuasion-izing it,” to create a new musical experience. Dedicated and new fans alike are inspiration for the members to keep performing for over half a century.

Felix Hernandez is in the business of remembering the good ol’ days. Hernandez’s wildly popular radio show, Rhythm Revue, takes on a life of its own at New York’s Roseland, where three thousand disciples regularly come to hear Fernandez spin the sounds of the past and boogie down. Felix Hernandez will rock the crowd once again at SummerStage again with his mix of soul, Motown, funk, salsa and disco dance classics. Bring your dancing shoes.

Wonderfully surreal, painfully real – Domestic is the story of children, adults, and animals who live together trying to have a better life, but sometimes death comes unexpectedly. In the bittersweet comedy “Domestic” it is all about us – people who eat the animals that they love and the animals that love people unconditionally. Curated by Rooftop Films.
Outdoor Cinema is an annual international festival of open-air cinema, music, dance, and food. It includes eight weeks of films at Socrates Sculpture Park, taking place on Wednesday evenings through August 21. The festival kicks off on July 3rd with a new American film to welcome Independence Day weekend: Our Nixon, a feature-length documentary directed by Penny Lane, first debuted in March at SXSW and to be released in theaters in July 2013. Outdoor Cinema 2013 features eight international titles from Chad, the Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Mexico, Romania, South Korea, Turkey, and the United States.
In addition to the films, which are presented in their original language (with English subtitles), each evening will feature regional cuisine from neighborhood restaurants and performances by local musicians and dancers that celebrate the culture of the film. Pre-screening performances begin at 7:00pm and films begin at sunset (weather permitting). From 6pm-8pm, we will also offer free sunset paddling sessions from the Socrates Sculpture Park beach at Hallets Cove, just north of the park.
Admission is free, and the evening’s food and performance line-up is announced the week prior.

Acclaimed impresario of non-traditional theater Randy Weiner and director Alfred Preisser team up for a hip-hop themed theater remake of the classic story, “King Kong,” a totally original music/dance/comedy spectacle that radically subverts everything you thought you knew about one of the most famous love stories of all time. Set in the “Bronx is Burning” era of the late 1970s, SummerStage's “King Kong” celebrates the nascent forms of hip-hop music and graffiti art that grew out of the economically stressed South Bronx and went on to become one of the defining, most powerful and profitable artistic movements in the world.

The Gold brothers, the owners of a failing R&B label (Gold Records) are in search of a musical savior. Having heard of a mystic place, a lost world cut off from the rest of civilization by the East River to the south and the Cross Bronx Expressway to the north and enshrouded in the fog of a thousand apartment building fires set by absentee landlords, the legendary South Bronx of 1978 is also the home of the most talented artist alive. Kong is an M.C. and natural genius of rhyme and rhythm whose awesome powers transcend artificial categories and defy the crass and hackneyed formulas of the commercial music industry. In hot pursuit of Kong, the Gold brothers hire a beautiful secretary, Faye Wellington, and go off to capture this force of nature in order to profit from Kong's gifts and share his music with a world desperately in need of inspiration. They load up the Gold family Volvo and journey to deepest, darkest South Bronx to capture Kong and bring him to civilization.

SummerStage Theatre, in collaboration with Preisser and Weiner, have created a fun, outrageous, and thoroughly entertaining work that will be not only be a unique and exciting experience but also a twisted and insightful treatment of the racial stereotypes inherent in the “King Kong” story.

Originally founded in 1977 in the Bronx, by Jimmy D and Jimmy Lee, Rock Steady Crew has become one of the most well-known and recognizable B-Boy groups in the world. These pioneers and creators of break-dancing used dance battles as a means of recruitment to grow its talented team and gain national acclaim while touring throughout the world. Since its formation, Rock Steady Crew has adapted all aspects of Hip-Hop, from DJ's to Emcee's, and from Writers to B-Boys & B-Girls. More recently, Rock Steady Crew received a VH1 Hip-Hop Honors award, performed on ABC's, Dancing With The Stars, and also had CNN coverage of their 35th anniversary.

In their world premiere work “RSC Ghetto Made”, Rock Steady Crew will be showing New York and the world what a real Hip-Hop show looks like as they bring it back to basics and display why they are the kings of the original movement.

The Land Art Generator Initiative: Freshkills Park is an exhibition of the top 25 designs selected out of 250 submissions from around the globe by artists, architects, designers, engineers, landscape architects, and more. LAGI 2012 was an ideas competition to design a site-specific public artwork that, in addition to its conceptual beauty, has the ability to harness energy cleanly from nature and convert it into electricity for the utility grid. At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in over 100 years. The transformation of what was formerly the world’s largest landfill into a productive and beautiful cultural destination will make the park a symbol of renewal and an expression of how our society can restore balance to its landscape. The top three submissions not only heighten the beauty of the surrounding park land but also provide a gateway into a greater discussion about the preservation of the environment.

The Randall’s Island Park Alliance, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Made Event are pleased to present FLOW, the annual summer art exhibit along the shoreline at Randall’s Island Park in New York City. FLOW is aimed at fostering appreciation of the shoreline through artistic expression, while calling visitors to interact with and care for the Park’s island environment. Each year, FLOW features five site specific projects by participants in the Bronx Museum’s Artists in the Marketplace (AIM) program for emerging artists.

Randall’s Island Park is a unique and remarkable waterfront resource, located in the East River with views of the Queens, Bronx and Manhattan shorelines. New waterfront pathways run along the 4.5-mile shoreline, which includes almost 9 acres of restored salt marsh and freshwater wetlands. The Park also offers a track & field stadium, a golf center, a 20-court tennis center and dozens of new playing fields, as well as the Harlem River Event Site, home of Made Event’s Electric Zoo, a three-day Labor Day weekend concert event at Randall’s Island which draws local and international DJ artists and audience.

FLOW.13 – this year's third annual exhibition – will be open to the public every day from June-November, and will feature five new site-specific installations, all reflecting and encouraging interaction with the Park’s history and environment. The five installations are located along the southern shoreline of Randall's Island Park.

FLOW is made possible through support from Made Event, proud producers of The Electric Zoo Festival, NYC’s largest electronic dance music festival, held annually at Randall’s Island Park.

Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre.

Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass.

Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre’s Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.

The CityParks PuppetMobile is the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

Join us for the 14th season of our free, outdoor film series! This year's theme, "With Love From..." tours cities from around the globe with a lineup of fantastic films.

DJs hit the stage at 6:00pm and movies begin at sundown.

LINEUP:

July 11 - Ferris Bueller's Day Off
High School truant extraordinaire, Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) plots to take one last grand day off before graduation, touring the streets on Chicago in a Ferrari “borrowed” from a friend’s father while staying one step ahead of principal Rooney (Jeffrey Jones). A master of capturing the trials and triumphs of teenage freedom, Director John Hughes blends satire, social commentary, and pure fun. [PG-13] Short film: Creep by Sharif Anthony. DJ: Still Life

July 18 - Enter the Dragon
Under the guise of an international martial arts competition, Bruce Lee and partners John Saxon and Jim Kelly infiltrate the hidden island fortress of a powerful drug syndicate off the coast of Hong Kong. Perhaps the seminal Kung Fu film of the 1970’s, Lee’s final film features the martial arts master at the height of his career with superbly staged fight scenes in a variety of styles. [R] Short film: Catnip: Egress to Oblivion by Jason Willis DJ: Hahn Solo

July 25 - Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
When young Charlie Bucket finds the final golden ticket wrapped inside a Wonka Bar, he is granted access to the secret mysteries of Mr. Wonka’s (Gene Wilder) chocolate factory. The 1971 musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book whisks five kids into a world of pure imagination complete with chocolate rivers, fizzy lifting drink, and singing Umpa Lumpas. [G] Short film: Irish Folk Furniture by Tony Donoghue DJ: Ayres

August 1 - 8 Mile
Rapper Eminem made his acting debut in this semi-autobiographical journey of a white kid trying to make it as a hip-hop artist in the bombed out heart of inner city Detroit. After freezing up during an important rap battle, the young rapper, Rabbit, thinks he is at a dead end, but his girlfriend (Britney Murphy) helps him build up the courage to take one last shot. [R] Short film: Until the Quiet Comes by Kahlil Joseph DJ: Who Am I

August 8 - Roman Holiday
Princess Ann (Audrey Hepburn) is an unsatisfied princess who, in an attempt to find her freedom, winds up stumbling into the apartment of reporter – and bachelor – Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck). The two dodge her secret service guards all throughout the city while giving the Princess a taste of the real world. [NR] Short film: How She Slept At Night by Lilli Carré DJ: $mall ¢hange

August 15 - Rocky
After the top boxing contender drops out, small time debt collector Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) gets a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship. Set on the eve of the Philadelphian Bicentennial, Rocky took Hollywood by surprise, as the rags-to-riches classic creamed box offices and won the Academy Award for best picture, in addition to featuring one of film history’s most iconic training montages. [PG] Short film: Marcel, King of Tervuren by Tom Schroeder DJ: Emch

August 22 - Vertigo
Retired private eye, Scottie Ferguson (Jimmy Stewart) battles acrophobia in one final case, trailing the enchanting Madeleine Elster (Kim Novak). Hailed as one of Alfred Hitchcock’s greatest works, winding through the streets of San Francisco in dazzlingly rich Technicolor, Vertigo weaves a dizzying story of love and obsession. [PG] Short film: My Favorite Picture of You by Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin DJ: Geko Jones

August 29 - PUBLIC VOTE!
As is tradition, Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy and Syfy invite the public to vote on the last film of the summer starting on August 22. Check out the contenders below (rained-out films will also be entered into the running):

  • Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (Benicio del Toro) take on the spiraling psychedelic safari of 1970s Las Vegas on a savage journey to the heart of the American Dream. Terry Gilliam’s highly stylized trip of a film captures all the whit, humor and horror of Hunter S. Thompson’s classic work of Gonzo journalism. [R]
  • Good Will Hunting
At one of Boston’s top universities, MIT janitor Will Hunting (Matt Damon) is discovered after solving one of the schools most vexing math equations, but the future of this brilliant mind depends on the guidance of therapist Sean Maguire (Robin Williams). [R]
  • Lost in Translation
Two lonely strangers, Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) and Bob Harris (Bill Murray), forge a touching and unexpected friendship while adventuring through high-speed Tokyo in Sofia Coppola’s Oscar-winning film. [R]

The Greek-American Folklore Society is dedicated to the study, preservation, and instruction of the history and traditions of Hellenic folk culture. We share our work with the public through stage re-enactments of traditional Greek customs, songs, and dances, as well as through lectures, exhibits, and workshops.
The Society activities encompass a wide variety of folk art traditions from all regions and islands of Greece, in addition to the communities of the Greek Diaspora past and present. The primary focus is on Demotic folk songs and dances, as these reveal both the spirit and materiality of their respective cultures of origin. In the lyrics, music, and ritualized motion of Greek folk traditions, we see reflections of a people's history, spirituality and world-view. We discern aesthetic ideals which defined Greek communities of past generations.
We give special attention to old Greek communities lost or otherwise forgotten in the Balkans. Of particular importance to GAFS is the authenticity of the material it teaches and presents, which is accomplished through extensive research in the villages of Greece, as well as collaboration with prominent folk groups and organizations in Greece.

<![CDATA[Hip-Hop Theater: King Kong]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/08/01/king-kong-written-by-alfred-preisser-randy-weiner-directed-by-alfred-preisser http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/08/01/king-kong-written-by-alfred-preisser-randy-weiner-directed-by-alfred-preisser Date: August 1, 2013
