Learn to Ride—Adults is a free class for adults and mature teens who are ready to ride. Doesn’t matter if you’re 18 or 80, we’ll get you rolling in no time. With our safe, easy, effective method, Learn to Ride students learn how to balance, pedal, start, stop, and steer a bike, as well as adjust a helmet for proper fit. Most people learn to ride in one session, but even if they don’t, they’ll leave equipped with an easy, low-stress way to teach themselves—or, they can join us for another free class!

Our Learn to Ride classes start you moving on a bike without pedals or training wheels so you can learn to balance the bike. Once you can get your bike to glide (continue to roll with your feet off the ground) and can control the bike with the handlebars and brakes, the pedals are added and you can use your feet to pedal the bike and keep it rolling.

During this artist talk, Holly Veselka and aricoco each discuss their creative process and the concepts behind their solo projects.

In the Sunroom, Veselka manipulates and re-contextualizes cultural artifacts, including diagrams, illustrations, charts, and maps. She prints antiquated images, as envisioned by such 19th-century scientists, philosophers, and authors as Claude Ruggieri and Jules Verne, onto fabrics to create sculptural objects.

Artist aricoco uses recycled fabrics to weave garments for protection and to create environments for habitation. In the Sun Porch, she makes outfits and headgear that represent an insect’s life cycle in an environment resembling a carnivorous garden. Inhabiting the garden are fantastical bugs, which must develop new skills to adapt to hostile surroundings.

This event is free with admission to the grounds.

In this 18th century play by Oliver Goldsmith, wealthy countryman Mr. Hardcastle arranges for his daughter Kate to meet Charles Marlow, the son of a rich Londoner, hoping the pair will marry. Unfortunately, Marlow is nervous around upper-class women, yet the complete opposite around working-class women. On his first acquaintance with Kate, the latter realises she will have to pretend to be 'common', or Marlow will not woo her. Thus Kate 'stoops to conquer', by posing as a maid, hoping to put Marlow at his ease so he falls for her.

The mission of Hudson Warehouse is to present the classics in exciting productions inspired by our past and relevant to our present day.

Once a free and open society, Vienna is bitterly divided between high morals and the greed of commerce. Disguised as a monk, the duke wanders the land, prying into the daily lives of his subjects. When his deputy sentences Claudio to death, the virtue and purity of his sister, Isabella, is the price she must pay to save her brother’s life. Measure for Measure is directed by Artistic Director Stephen Burdman.

Obliterating dubstep stutters and crisp electropop pulses. Hazy electrostatic breezes and epinephrine dancefloor turnarounds. Sylvan Esso—the singer Amelia Meath of Mountain Man and the producer (and Megafaun bassist) Nick Sanborn—create “endlessly elastic and three-dimensional” (NPR) songs that conjure up dreamlike conflations of sensuality and sexual depravity, homesickness and wanderlust, nostalgia and immediacy. The duo came together in Durham, NC in 2013 after the two met on a shared bill and Meath asked Sanborn to remix a song she had written for Mountain Man. Aesthetic sympathies were discovered, artistic sparks flew, and the resulting self-titled debut record, released on Partisan Records in May of 2014, made them one of the fastest rising bands of last year. The leap from small clubs to festival stages may have been been swift but it’s also seamless—their sound is huge, and their live show is a celebratory revelation.

The prolific songwriter Aaron Maine’s Porches has mined darker and weirder sonic territory in the past, but its latest incarnation—a lineup that includes Greta Kline of Frankie Cosmos—makes “danceable, shimmery pop with rock instruments (keyboards too), in an '80s-sorta way.” (Brooklyn Vegan)

Located along the esplanade leading up to the recently opened High Bridge, Oh Sit! 14 Sculptors Consider the Chair is a group exhibition of nine artists’ public artworks. In a frantic world, finding a chair can be almost impossible and settling comfortably into one can be an enormous satisfaction. Sitting in the wrong seat can cause anxiety and an even pain. Exhibiting artists Dan Bergman, Allan Cyprys, Robert Dell, Gregoire Ferland, Esther Grillo, Christina Jorge, Siena Gillann Porta, Herb Rosenberg and Chuck von Schmidt respond imaginatively to the notion of sitting or using a chair. Oh Sit! is framed as an imperative, a command—a way of asking the viewer to look and really consider the concept “chair” both objectively and subjectively.

Explore the Orchard Beach Lagoon, including Bartow Creek as we look for birds that live in this estuarine habitat of the Long Island Sound. Participants are chosen by lottery. To enter your name in the lottery, visit www.nyc.gov/parks/rangers/register on Thursday, July 16th.

On our hikes you can gain orienteering skills, explore our city's rich history, or just take an hour to unplug from the world. Moderate hikes are longer, faster-paced hikes that occur on rugged terrain, and/or cover long distances. For all hiking programs we recomend wearing comfortable shoes or boots, and packing water and a light snack.

Explore the history of City Hall Park before walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. This one way hike will end in Brooklyn Bridge Park, where you wil enjoy views from the East River in this expansive park.

Clementine has travelled all the way from Williamsburg to explore Central Park!

Learn about water conservation; repurpose litter to make art the Brooklyn way, help to build our very own recycle/reuse robot, then wind down with a lovely picnic—the remains of which you can compost at home, of course.

This family-friendly program is free. All ages are welcome. Please RSVP to let us know you're coming.

This program takes place rain or shine, except in extreme weather conditions (heavy rain, sustained winds of 30mph or heat index above 95 degrees).

Awesome Asana Yoga is an hour-long exercise in body stretching and mind cleansing taught by registered yoga teacher Chelsea Best. As Chelsea says, “Awesome Asana offers a unique yogic journey, linking breath with movement in a meditative Vinyasa Flow class style designed to awaken the spirit and bring the body and mind back to a place of peace.” The class is Open Level Vinyasa, and is moderately challenging.

MJM’s Awesome Asana is part of Chelsea’s “Localize Yoga” project, which aims to make yoga affordable and accessible – to present it “as a possibility, rather than as a luxury” – to the denizens of upper Manhattan. The class is $5, and mats, should you need one, are provided.

Insects may be tiny, but their activity enlivens the garden with color, sound and movement. This summer, tag along with our visiting naturalists as they hunt for creatures that soar and sing above Wave Hill. Each special weekend begins with an insect-themed Family Art Project in the morning and continues with a nature walk in the afternoon. Butterflies are among nature’s most delicate and colorful creatures.

Join naturalist Paul Keim on a walk through the grounds and learn field tips for identifying common species. Children ages 10 and older welcome with an adult.

This event is free with admission to the grounds, but space is limited and registration is recommended, online at wavehill.org or onsite at the Perkins Visitor Center.
