<![CDATA[Hip-Hop Theater: King Kong]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/08/20/king-kong-written-by-alfred-preisser-randy-weiner-directed-by-alfred-preisser http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/08/20/king-kong-written-by-alfred-preisser-randy-weiner-directed-by-alfred-preisser Date: August 20, 2013

Acclaimed impresario of non-traditional theater Randy Weiner and director Alfred Preisser team up for a hip-hop themed theater remake of the classic story, “King Kong,” a totally original music/dance/comedy spectacle that radically subverts everything you thought you knew about one of the most famous love stories of all time. Set in the “Bronx is Burning” era of the late 1970s, SummerStage's “King Kong” celebrates the nascent forms of hip-hop music and graffiti art that grew out of the economically stressed South Bronx and went on to become one of the defining, most powerful and profitable artistic movements in the world.

The Gold brothers, the owners of a failing R&B label (Gold Records) are in search of a musical savior. Having heard of a mystic place, a lost world cut off from the rest of civilization by the East River to the south and the Cross Bronx Expressway to the north and enshrouded in the fog of a thousand apartment building fires set by absentee landlords, the legendary South Bronx of 1978 is also the home of the most talented artist alive. Kong is an M.C. and natural genius of rhyme and rhythm whose awesome powers transcend artificial categories and defy the crass and hackneyed formulas of the commercial music industry. In hot pursuit of Kong, the Gold brothers hire a beautiful secretary, Faye Wellington, and go off to capture this force of nature in order to profit from Kong's gifts and share his music with a world desperately in need of inspiration. They load up the Gold family Volvo and journey to deepest, darkest South Bronx to capture Kong and bring him to civilization.

SummerStage Theatre, in collaboration with Preisser and Weiner, have created a fun, outrageous, and thoroughly entertaining work that will be not only be a unique and exciting experience but also a twisted and insightful treatment of the racial stereotypes inherent in the “King Kong” story.

Invasive Pigments is a series of watercolor-like paintings which explores the migration and proliferation of weeds and other “unintentional” plants in tandem with human movement. The Land Art Generator Initiative: Freshkills Park is an exhibition of the top 25 designs selected out of 250 submissions from around the globe by artists, architects, designers, engineers, landscape architects, and more. LAGI 2012 was an ideas competition to design a site-specific public artwork that, in addition to its conceptual beauty, has the ability to harness energy cleanly from nature and convert it into electricity for the utility grid. At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in over 100 years. The transformation of what was formerly the world’s largest landfill into a productive and beautiful cultural destination will make the park a symbol of renewal and an expression of how our society can restore balance to its landscape. The top three submissions not only heighten the beauty of the surrounding park land but also provide a gateway into a greater discussion about the preservation of the environment.

Van Cortlandt House Museum invites children to come along on a weeklong discovery of history in their backyard at the “Adventures in Time” Summer History Camp.

While on their “Adventure in Time” at Van Cortlandt House, campers will discover the everyday life of an 18th century child as they play the Van Cortlandt children’s favorite games, try on period clothing, and make 18th century toys. Campers will also lend a hand with plantation chores such as churning butter, gathering wood and hauling water.

“Adventures in Time” will also explore the early years of the Revolutionary War as campers become soldiers in General George Washington’s army. All aspects of military life will be covered from “enlisting” in the army, for which they will receive a bonus, to pitching a wedge tent and setting up camp. Campers will also learn military drills, and hike up to the top of Vault Hill on reconnaissance just like their 18th century counterparts who were stationed at the Van Cortlandt’s plantation during the Revolutionary War.

Campers must bring their own brown bag lunch each day but snacks and water are provided.

"Adventures in Time" Summer History Camp is open to all children with a sense of adventure who have completed 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th grade in the Spring of 2013. We encourage early enrollment, as camp space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis. To enroll, call Van Cortlandt House Museum or e-mail for a camp application.

The Randall’s Island Park Alliance, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Made Event are pleased to present FLOW, the annual summer art exhibit along the shoreline at Randall’s Island Park in New York City. FLOW is aimed at fostering appreciation of the shoreline through artistic expression, while calling visitors to interact with and care for the Park’s island environment. Each year, FLOW features five site specific projects by participants in the Bronx Museum’s Artists in the Marketplace (AIM) program for emerging artists.

Randall’s Island Park is a unique and remarkable waterfront resource, located in the East River with views of the Queens, Bronx and Manhattan shorelines. New waterfront pathways run along the 4.5-mile shoreline, which includes almost 9 acres of restored salt marsh and freshwater wetlands. The Park also offers a track & field stadium, a golf center, a 20-court tennis center and dozens of new playing fields, as well as the Harlem River Event Site, home of Made Event’s Electric Zoo, a three-day Labor Day weekend concert event at Randall’s Island which draws local and international DJ artists and audience.

FLOW.13 – this year's third annual exhibition – will be open to the public every day from June-November, and will feature five new site-specific installations, all reflecting and encouraging interaction with the Park’s history and environment. The five installations are located along the southern shoreline of Randall's Island Park.

FLOW is made possible through support from Made Event, proud producers of The Electric Zoo Festival, NYC’s largest electronic dance music festival, held annually at Randall’s Island Park.

The FLOW exhibitions express the confluence of art, music and environment at Randall’s Island Park, in the midst of one of the world’s greatest cities.

Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre.

Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass.

Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre’s Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.

The CityParks PuppetMobile is the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form that has evolved over centuries into an exciting combination of martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. Capoeira was developed in Brazil, but its history extends to Africa and tribes from Angola. Slaves living on Brazilian Plantations who weren’t allowed to openly practice traditional forms of self-defense developed an ingenious method of disguising their training by combining it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments. Some of capoeira’s benefits include strength, flexibility, stamina, overall fitness and confidence. Benefits of capoeira for kids include promoting social interaction and sense of belonging, building confidence, discipline and self esteem, promoting a healthy lifestyle so children become active, and healthy, and develop cultural awareness and tolerance. Wear comfortable clothing.

The Edge of Heaven, a drama from a German-born, Turkish-descended filmmaker, explores the lives of six characters, including two young women: a Kurdish political activist wanted by the German authorities and Lotte, a naïve German student who becoming sexually entangled with her. Fassbinder muse Hanna Schygulla plays Lotte’s suspicious mother in this tale from a new Europe – one in which national boundaries are disappearing as quickly as traditional sexual norms.

Outdoor Cinema is an annual international festival of open-air cinema, music, dance, and food that includes eight weeks of films at Socrates Sculpture Park, taking place on Wednesday evenings through August 21. In addition to the films, which are presented in their original language (with English subtitles), each evening will feature regional cuisine from neighborhood restaurants and performances by local musicians and dancers that celebrate the culture of the film. Pre-screening performances begin at 7:00 p.m. and films begin at sunset (weather permitting). From 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m., we will also offer free sunset paddling sessions from the Socrates Sculpture Park beach at Hallets Cove, just north of the park.

In partnership with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, the Land Art Generator Initiative held an ideas competition for a site-specific public artwork designed to operate as a source of clean energy for the city utility grid, using Freshkills Park as the design site.

Regenerative Infrastructures features many of the top submissions to that open call, each with the capacity to power hundreds of homes. The Land Art Generator Initiative creates sustainable design solutions that integrate art and technology into renewable energy infrastructure around the world. Regenerative Infrastructures draws a much needed connection between the two critical issues of sustainable development—energy generation and waste management—highlighting solutions that address both problems at once, thereby creating economically beneficial hybrid utility installations.

This event is free, but seating is limited. Please email to RSVP.

<![CDATA[Hip-Hop Theater: King Kong]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/08/22/king-kong-written-by-alfred-preisser-randy-weiner-directed-by-alfred-preisser http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/08/22/king-kong-written-by-alfred-preisser-randy-weiner-directed-by-alfred-preisser Date: August 22, 2013
