The Randall’s Island Park Alliance, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Made Event are pleased to present FLOW, the annual summer art exhibit along the shoreline at Randall’s Island Park in New York City. FLOW is aimed at fostering appreciation of the shoreline through artistic expression, while calling visitors to interact with and care for the Park’s island environment. Each year, FLOW features five site specific projects by participants in the Bronx Museum’s Artists in the Marketplace (AIM) program for emerging artists.

Randall’s Island Park is a unique and remarkable waterfront resource, located in the East River with views of the Queens, Bronx and Manhattan shorelines. New waterfront pathways run along the 4.5-mile shoreline, which includes almost 9 acres of restored salt marsh and freshwater wetlands. The Park also offers a track & field stadium, a golf center, a 20-court tennis center and dozens of new playing fields, as well as the Harlem River Event Site, home of Made Event’s Electric Zoo, a three-day Labor Day weekend concert event at Randall’s Island which draws local and international DJ artists and audience.

FLOW.13 – this year's third annual exhibition – will be open to the public every day from June-November, and will feature five new site-specific installations, all reflecting and encouraging interaction with the Park’s history and environment. The five installations are located along the southern shoreline of Randall's Island Park.

FLOW is made possible through support from Made Event, proud producers of The Electric Zoo Festival, NYC’s largest electronic dance music festival, held annually at Randall’s Island Park.

The FLOW exhibitions express the confluence of art, music and environment at Randall’s Island Park, in the midst of one of the world’s greatest cities.

Urban Park Rangers are role models who encourage children to let their imaginations run wild in a safe, supportive atmosphere.

While most of our programs are family friendly, the programs highlighted here are specifically for young children and families. Femi Kuti & The Positive Force have blended Funk, Jazz, and African Folk throughout their 27 year career to create a colorful and distinctive sound in the music world. The records tell their story: After a short spell at Motown, Femi Kuti took on the Afrobeat sound with his first international album in 1998 Shoki Shoki, before rubbing shoulders with the modern urban style of his American peers such as Mos Def and Common on the album, Fight To Win. In 2004 he opened The Shrine, the club where he recorded the live album Africa Shrine. He re-emerged in 2008 with Day by Day and Africa for Africa in 2010, for which he received two GRAMMY nominations. In 2012 he was both inducted into the Headies Hall of Fame (the most prestigious music awards in Nigeria) and was the opening act on the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ European Tour.

Ahmed Gallab, the Sudanese-born multi-instrumentalist and founder of Sinkane, came to the US with his family at age five and then continued to move around until he was 18, when he settled in Columbus, OH. There, he became part of the city’s hardcore Punk scene. Before making a record of his own, Gallab was best known for lending his musical talents to the likes of Yeasayer, Caribou, and Of Montreal. His music reflects the geographic span of his travels. Mars, his debut was released in 2012. NPR said of the record and its use of collaborations: “Each appearance, like each instrument, is deftly placed by Gallab and used by the artist to help realize his vision rather than merely round out his credits sheet. The result is a body of work that sings on many levels, yet remains tethered to one confident voice.”

King Britt is a producer, composer, performer and curator of electronic music. As a producer/composer, Britt fuses his knowledge of music history from many cultures and genres with electronic compositions, which redefine and re-contextualizes the past into the present. Britt has remixed and produced many diverse artists including Miles Davis, Femi Kuti, Angelique Kidjo, King Sunny Ade as well as scoring commercials for Rolex and L’oreal Paris. From cutting his craft as the wax poetic for the GRAMMY Award winning Digable Planets to traveling solo in different cities and countries, Britt is bringing cultures together through his eclectic taste and live improvised dance/experimental sets.

The High Line gets a lot of hype, but it is just one example of the many ways community leaders and creative thinkers are re-imagining public space.

Stop by for the launch of this year’s Beyond the High Line, a series of free talks about adaptive reuse projects around the world. The first talk features the Reading Viaduct, a 4.7-mile-long railway traveling through Philadelphia. Beginning in 1893, the railway carried both passengers and mail to and from the Reading Terminal, in downtown Philadelphia. When the railway ceased operations in the 1980s, nature took over, covering the tracks with wild grasses and self-seeded shrubs.

Paul Levy, of Center City District, will present plans for his business improvement district’s vision of a Philadelphia destination centered around a transformed Reading Viaduct. Leah Murphy, of Interface Studio, will speak on behalf of VIADUCTgreene, an advocacy group that seeks to preserve the viaduct’s historical industrial character and existing self-seeded landscape.

This High Line Program is free and open to visitors of all ages. No RSVP required. A free reception with the speakers will follow the presentation.

<![CDATA[Tribute to Ismael Rivera with Moncho Rivera in association with La Mega]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/06/25/tribute-to-ismael-rivera-with-moncho-rivera-in-association-with-la-mega http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/06/25/tribute-to-ismael-rivera-with-moncho-rivera-in-association-with-la-mega Date: June 25, 2013

As a successful tropical music vocalist, the young Ramon “Moncho” Rivera has spent a lifetime singing praises to his famed uncle, Ismeal Rivera. After all, Ismeal Rivera was the reigning king of soneros of his generation, and since his passing, he's been one of the most revered figures in the history of salsa in Puerto Rico and throughout Latin America. In Mocho’s new album, Mi Regalo En Navidad, he follows in his uncle’s footsteps as he celebrates the ‘tis to be merry season just like the oldest Rivera did over 40 years ago. One of the highlights of the young Moncho Rivera’s music is that he remains faithful to his uncle’s unique and hugely popular singing style, one of the few who still does today.
