Elaborate, colorful, quizzical, Yinka Shonibare's renowned, textile-based art has been the focus of more than 50 solo museum and gallery exhibitions worldwide. The latest, Yinka Shonibare MBE: Colonial Arrangements, will take place, from May 1st to August 31st, 2015, at Morris-Jumel Mansion. It's a fitting match, with the Mansion's lovingly preserved 18th- and 19th-century interiors set to serve as a baroque backdrop for Shonibare's ornately stylized, Dutch wax-adorned sculpture, including an entirely new, never-before-seen work, commissioned by the Mansion.

The exhibit kicks off May 1st with a two-tiered opening. At 6 p.m., we commence a catered VIP Preview Hour, to be attended by the artist and offering first-look access to Shonibare's awe-striking art. At 7 p.m., we open the Mansion to the general public. The general opening is free; tickets to the VIP Preview are $50. Reservations are required for both. To RSVP call (212) 923-8008 or visit yinkavip@brownpapertickets.com. The opening is an accesible event.

Calling all park lovers! This spring, the Playground Improvement Project (PIP) of the New York Junior League invites you to join them in rolling up your sleeves to help revitalize Columbus Park and Foley Square. Throughout five weekends in April and May PIP committee members, New York Junior League volunteers, and external volunteers will spend a day in the park (8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.) gardening, landscaping, painting, and completing other tasks to help spruce up this highly used space. We will provide you with breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt. Please reach out to playground@nyjl.org with any questions or if you are interested in making a donation to this cause.

Please RSVP if you are interested in participating in one or more park days.

About the New York Junior League Playground Improvement Project

For more than 20 years, the Playground Improvement Project (PIP) has been a New York Junior League signature community project. Our volunteers create safe, beautiful, well-organized and educational play spaces for children and other members of the New York City community. PIP focuses on sites and parks that need major renovation and have the greatest impact on the surrounding community. Weekend clean up days include landscaping and repairing the parks. We work with over 700 volunteers a season to help improve the park and make a positive impact on the community.

Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

Awesome Asana Yoga is an hour-long exercise in body stretching and mind cleansing taught by registered yoga teacher Chelsea Best. As Chelsea says, “Awesome Asana offers a unique yogic journey, linking breath with movement in a meditative Vinyasa Flow class style designed to awaken the spirit and bring the body and mind back to a place of peace.” The class is Open Level Vinyasa, and is moderately challenging.

MJM’s Awesome Asana is part of Chelsea’s “Localize Yoga” project, which aims to make yoga affordable and accessible – to present it “as a possibility, rather than as a luxury” – to the denizens of upper Manhattan. The class is $5, and mats, should you need one, are provided.
