Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

Many New Yorkers are unaware of the 350 species of wild birds—almost a third of all bird species in North America—that live in or pass through New York City each year. Artist Alan Messer skillfully captures many, from exquisite migrating blackburnian warblers in Central Park’s ramble to a Northern Harrier scanning the vast marshes of Jamaica Bay. Conserving Our City of Nature: The Artwork of Alan Messer presented by NYC Audubon reveals over 30 of Messer’s detailed paintings, illustrations, and field sketches of New York City's avian wildlife and habitats, offering a view of NYC Audubon's conservation mission through an artistic eye.

Interested in gardening, but don’t have any outdoor space? Join Grow to Learn staff and schools on an indoor gardening tour of Harlem! Unfortunately we will not be able to stop at PS 50 Vito Marcantonio anymore, but we'll still visit PS 208m Alain L. Locke Magnet School for Environmental Stewardship to see their great hydroponics classroom, constructed in conjunction with NY Sun Works. At this site, you’ll get inspired by a wonderful program, and learn a bit more about how indoor gardens and hydroponic science labs get started, what special considerations you should keep in mind for indoor gardening and farming, and where to receive funding for indoor projects!

Due to space limitations, the tour will be capped at 30 participants. Tour participants will receive a free, 1-ride metrocard for use during this tour. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to attend the Indoor Garden Meet Up from 6:00-7:30 at the nearby Urban Garden Center. See the Indoor Garden Meet Up description for more details.

Although our observable universe is almost 14 billion years old, the basis for much of what we see today was laid in the first 400,000 years. In fact, the first tenth of the first second of the Universe was filled with some of the most violent conditions the Universe has ever seen!

Learn about the universe’s dramatic origins in this talk by Jaclyn Avidon from the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York, as part of NYC Parks’ Dark Nights, Bright Lights series. After the lecture, telescopes will be set up for observing on the rooftop (weather permitting). Guests are welcome to bring their own binoculars and telescopes and set them up alongside the experts.

The event is free and open to the public.

Join us for a DIY print and stamp workshop with the Art Students League’s Sonomi Kobayashi. Using overlooked, everyday objects such as wine corks, paper clips, buttons, rubber bands, foot care cushions (bunion and corn cushions), and bottle caps you will create print blocks and stamps to make multilayered prints and patterns that can be used to enhance journal covers, stationery, fabrics, accessories, and anything else you can think of.

Sonomi Kobayashi is a New York based artist, from Japan. She studied painting, sculpture and printmaking at the Art Students League of New York from which she received a studio certificate in painting. She now works out of her studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York and exhibits frequently in the United States, Japan, and Europe. She received the Will Barnet Grant in Printmaking in 2013, and has done residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, VT, Vytlacil Campas, Sparkill, NY, and Cat'Art Contemporary Art Centre, Sainte Colombe, France. Her work expresses the relationships between humanity, nature, earth and the universe. Viewers often find universality in her paintings which depict the shapes and symbols found in nature.

Calling all park lovers! This spring, the Playground Improvement Project (PIP) of the New York Junior League invites you to join them in rolling up your sleeves to help revitalize Columbus Park and Foley Square. Throughout five weekends in April and May PIP committee members, New York Junior League volunteers, and external volunteers will spend a day in the park (8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.) gardening, landscaping, painting, and completing other tasks to help spruce up this highly used space. We will provide you with breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt. Please reach out to playground@nyjl.org with any questions or if you are interested in making a donation to this cause.

Please RSVP if you are interested in participating in one or more park days. Registration closes when capacity is reached or the Wednesday prior to that weekend's park days.

About the New York Junior League Playground Improvement Project

For more than 20 years, the Playground Improvement Project (PIP) has been a New York Junior League signature community project. Our volunteers create safe, beautiful, well-organized and educational play spaces for children and other members of the New York City community. PIP focuses on sites and parks that need major renovation and have the greatest impact on the surrounding community. Weekend clean up days include landscaping and repairing the parks. We work with over 700 volunteers a season to help improve the park and make a positive impact on the community.
