Rockaway!, a free public arts festival sponsored by the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) to celebrate the reopening of Fort Tilden and recognize the ongoing recovery of the Rockaway peninsula, opens June 29 and continues through September 1, 2014. Invited by the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA), an association of artists based in and around the Rockaways, and the JBRPC, MoMA PS1 has assisted and supported the conception of this festival.

One component of the festival is a group exhibition organized in collaboration with the Honolulu Biennial on the grounds of the newly restored Rockaway Beach Surf Club on Beach 87th Street in Rockaway Beach. Following Hurricane Sandy, the Surf Club was the one of the largest relief centers on the peninsula; their organization facilitated and directed over 5,000 volunteers, with major contributions from MoMA PS1. The exhibition celebrates the efforts of the Rockaway community of surfers and artists in rebuilding their neighborhood.

For details and times of the rest of the exhibit, please visit the Rockaway! website.

Since the weather is nice and the garden is looking lush with greenery, you must be getting a lot of visitors inquiring about becoming a member or getting a box to grow. By having membership procedures and agreements in place, it will be very easy to welcome new folks. If you are having trouble getting folks to visit or stop by, what better way to draw them in than with an exciting event or two?

In this workshop, we will discuss the necessity of drafting membership procedures and agreements. We will go over successful event planning tips. We encourage groups to share their challenges and successes so we can learn from each other.

Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form that has evolved over centuries into an exciting combination of martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. Some of capoeira’s benefits include strength, flexibility, stamina, overall fitness and confidence. Benefits of capoeira for kids include promoting social interaction and sense of belonging, building confidence, discipline and self esteem, promoting a healthy lifestyle so children become active, and healthy, and develop cultural awareness and tolerance. Wear comfortable clothing.

Capoeira was developed in Brazil, but its history extends to Africa and tribes from Angola. Slaves living on Brazilian Plantations who weren’t allowed to openly practice traditional forms of self-defense developed an ingenious method of disguising their training by combining it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments.

A high point of each Sunset Wednesday includes a live performance on the grassy expanse of the Great Lawn, overlooking the majestic Palisades.

Ilu Aye—"The Drum of the World" in Yoruba—was founded in 2004 to celebrate the connections between the peoples and cultures of the African Diaspora. Bringing together the next generation of Afro-Puerto Rican, Afro-Dominican and Afro-Cuban percussionists and singers, Ilu Aye preserves and promulgates the rich cultural legacy of Africa in the Americas and the Caribbean, through performance, educational workshops and community-centered gatherings where the rhythms of the African Caribbean reign.

Trained by master musicians from all three islands and versed in sacred and popular rhythms, such as Bata, Güiro and Rumba (Cuba); Bomba and Plena (Puerto Rico); and Palos, Salves and Kongos (Dominican Republic), Ilu Aye interprets traditional songs and reinvigorates the genres with original compositions as well. Free with admission to the grounds.

Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre. Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is to focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass.

For details and times of the rest of the exhibit, please visit the Rockaway! website.
