Each winter, Wave Hill opens Glyndor Gallery as workspace for New York-area artists, giving them the unique opportunity to explore the winter landscape as a source of inspiration. Artists share aspects of their practice and engagement with Wave Hill through hands-on workshops. Workshops begin in Glyndor Gallery with an introduction to the artist’s work, then continue in the Ecology Building or Wave Hill House for the creative activity.

Working in pastel, Zachari Logan will create new drawings, furthering themes of identity and hybridity, based on studies of plants found onsite. In his workshop, he will demonstrate unique drawing methods and techniques that give pastels an innovative twist. Participants will make their own pastel drawing. Visitors aged 12 and over are welcome when accompanied by an adult. Newcomers and practicing artists alike are welcome.

NYC Parks is pleased to present the exhibition: The Birds of Richmond County. Artist Herb Smith’s interest in painting wildlife, especially birds, goes back to his youth. His ability and technique to capture the structural differences, colors and unique traits of birds by layering oil paint brings a satisfying depth to his work. Paying homage to masters of the Dutch Renaissance Age such as Van Eyck, Van Der Wyden, Rembrandt and Vermeer, his realistic approach creates an accurate quality that tantalizes the viewer’s perception in a way that is true to life.

There will be an opening reception on Thursday, January 14, 2016 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. The exhibit runs through 2-29-16.

Lenape Gallery hours are Monday to Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The gallery is closed on Sundays and holidays. Admission is free.

Learn the basics of by-laws and how to write them so that your garden group has a guide to working together effectively. While all registered GreenThumb gardens must follow the GreenThumb rules, the by-laws serve as a reference for situations in which there is confusion about how the organization runs. This workshop will help you work on issues of membership and conflict into your group structure.

The process of rehabilitating Helena Ely’s gardens—interpreting her vision and philosophy and tending the landscape day-to-day—is a deeply rewarding and very personal journey for Quill Teal-Sullivan, who has been gardening since she was a girl helping in her mother’s garden in the Pacific Northwest. In addressing the challenge of trying to bring Ely’s story and the important historic gardens at Meadowburn back to life, Teal-Sullivan has begun to find her own voice as a horticulturalist.

This is the first in Wave Hill’s 2016 Horticultural Lectures, a winter series hosted by the Friends of Horticulture Committee and devoted to the subject of garden making and garden design and the meaning of our interactions with plants and the natural world. The series continues February 17, and is held at the New York School of Interior Design in Manhattan.
