Erik Benson’s paintings depict the landscape of everyday metropolitan life, created with thousands of shapes hand-cut from dried sheets of acrylic paint. Benson uses this painstaking compositional technique to capture the complexity of urban development, with its interplay of construction and creative destruction, density and emptiness. Familiar cityscapes emerge as more complex than they initially appear.

Originally I was interested in creating a painting vocabulary that depicted the plasticity and temporality of unexamined things such as playgrounds and construction sites,” says Benson. “These interests have been growing into ideas and concerns that deal with the urban landscape, such as how cities grow and shrink, and what these issues mean to the inhabitants.”

In these vivid new paintings, Benson considers the role and impact of playgrounds, trees and parks within evolving communities, often setting the saturated colors and bold shapes of play equipment and dynamic tree branch patterns against the muted backdrops of the surrounding buildings. Inspired by his neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn, he creates works that are not precise representations, but rather archetypes, at once foreboding and optimistic.

Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre.

Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass.

Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre’s Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.

Students from the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation present a photography exhibition entitled Changing Lenses at Poe Park Visitors Center. The exhibition marks the beginning of a new program that expands arts education for young scientists, and brings their work beyond the walls of the school into the community at large.

Throughout the Spring 2013 semester, nine students in grades 9 – 11 gathered for weekly after-school sessions with UASWC art instructor Jessica Sinclair and teaching artist Mustafa Önder. Using SLR cameras, nine students were introduced to the fundamentals of photography. Emphasis was placed on the communicative properties of image-making: composition, storytelling, and conceptualization. Photographic outings were undertaken throughout the local community, to the Bronx Zoo, and to Bryant Park in Manhattan. The group also took a field trip to the International Center of Photography, where they received a guided tour by a museum educator.

The project is sponsored by Joy of Givings Something, Inc. (JGS), a not-for-profit organization that promotes the art of photography.

At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in over 100 years. The transformation of what was formerly the world’s largest landfill into a productive and beautiful cultural destination will make the park a symbol of renewal and an expression of how our society can restore balance to its landscape. In addition to providing a wide range of recreational opportunities, including many uncommon in the city, the park’s design, ecological restoration and cultural and educational programming will emphasize environmental sustainability and a renewed public concern for our human impact on the earth.

The Freshkills Park Design tour will depart from the St. George Ferry Terminal in Staten Island, and will take you by bus to see behind the scenes at Freshkills Park. Freshkills Park staff will be on hand to guide you through the history of the site as the Fresh Kills Landfill and share with you the development of new capital programs at Freshkills as part of the Draft Master Plan for the site designed by James Corner Field Operations. The bus will meet at the base of the steps leading away from the ferry terminal and towards the Staten Island Yankees Stadium. The tour lasts roughly one and a half hours and will return to the Staten Island Ferry.

Please sign up for this tour by visiting our Freshkills Park page and proceeding to Tours & Events. Details may confirm that the location is from the Eltingville Transit Center, but please note the tour will leave from St. George for this event. Email freshkillspark@parks.nyc.gov with questions. There is limited space on this tour, walk-ons will not be possible so register now.

(faux)H is a series of six hands-on workshops held at the Wyckoff farmhouse Museum, exploring traditional farm based skills: hand sewing, natural dying and preservation. Employing dye plants and crops grown on the Wyckoff farm, situated in the middle Brooklyn, (faux)H will be a collaborative experiment in the lost art of learning-by-doing. Join artist, Lisa Sikorski on a journey of learning about the slow process of making by hand and from the earth. Workshops are suitable for participants ages 13 and up.

Hand Sewing & Embroider: Have you ever wanted to make something without technology, the slowest possible way? Then we have just the thing! All it really takes is your hands, a needle, thread and fabric and we can make magic. We will learn how to design and assemble simple embroideries and designs. Come prepared to use your hands, work patiently and make yourself proud.

Join us for a unique Bronx River Flotilla, complete with a first-ever canoe race on the Bronx River, free community paddling and guided trips of the estuary. This event will also be a celebration of our newest park on the Bronx River Greenway: Starlight Park.

Registration for the Starlight 5k Canoe Challenge is now open. Help us raise vital funds to make canoeing on the river available to over 1,000 youth and their families this season. Help us reach our $20,000 goal by signing up to participate today! You’ll have a ton of fun while supporting a great cause.

We can only accommodate 10 teams, so pull together your family, friends and colleagues and register today! You’ll challenge yourself, have a great time, and provide vital support to enable hundreds of kids to discover the Bronx River this year.

Full schedule of the day's events:

  • 11:00 - 12:45: Starlight 5k Canoe Challenge
  • 12:45 - 1:30: Award Ceremony & Starlight Park Celebration
  • 1:30 - 3:45: Music, art, fishing demonstrations, free bike loan-outs, and public paddling, including free short community paddles, intermediate paddles to Concrete Plant Park, and a round-trip paddle to the Soundview Salt Marsh Restoration Project (you must register for the Restoration Tour below. Tickets available April 10, 2013)

Paddled the Flotilla before? Please note that this year’s event will be different. Construction of a fish passage will be underway at the southernmost dam on the river at 182nd St, marking the latest milestone in the restoration of the river. While we celebrate this progress, it means that a full river paddle is not possible. Besides the team canoe challenge, there will be plenty of opportunities to get out on the river at the 2013 Flotilla!
