Haupt Conservatory’s permanent collection of tropical trees, flowers, and foliage, including orange-yellow crotons, fuschia bromeliads, and rosy-red hibiscus. Through self-guided strolls, use of a virtual smart phone tour, or participation in docent-led tours of the Conservatory offered daily at 12:30 p.m., visitors can encounter many surprises in the largest Victorian-style glasshouse in the country. Visitors can also enjoy a display of tropical photos from the International Garden Photographer of the Year competition and partake in photography lessons on Sundays. Wave Hill Horticultural Lectures are devoted to landscape design and the meaning of our interactions with plants and the natural world. This year’s distinguished lecturers offer a walk down memory lane. But these presentations are not simply an indulgence in nostalgia, because the past strongly informs the present in the three subjects we address. Before Samuel Untermyer’s death in 1940, his gardens in Yonkers, New York, were among America’s most celebrated. Spearheading the rebirth of this estate are Untermyer Gardens Conservancy chair and former Wave Hill board member Stephen F. Byrns and former Wave Hill Gardener Timothy Tilghman, Untermyer’s horticulturist. (Marco Polo Stufano, Wave Hill’s founding Director of Horticulture, is adviser to the project.) Byrns, an award-winning partner at BKSK Architects, has published widely. He joins Tilghman, an acclaimed horticulturist whose experience ranges from Missouri to the Hudson Valley, in painting a bright picture of the recovery of this magnificent estate. The second in this series takes place February 27.

Through self-guided strolls, use of a virtual smart phone tour, or participation in docent-led tours of the Conservatory offered daily at 12:30 p.m., visitors can encounter many surprises in the largest Victorian-style glasshouse in the country. Visitors can also enjoy a display of tropical photos from the International Garden Photographer of the Year competition and partake in photography lessons on Sundays. Children can participate in a scavenger hunt that begins in the Conservatory and continues in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden.

Musical Ecologies is a new monthly symposium on music and sound held at the Old Stone House in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Curated and hosted by composer Dan Joseph, each event focuses on a single artist who presents a work or project either in the form of a talk or lecture, a multimedia presentation, a performance, or combination thereof. Eve Beglarian “is a humane, idealistic rebel and a musical sensualist.” “One of new music’s truly free spirits,” and a “remarkable experimentalist,” she is a composer, performer, and audio producer whose music is “an eclectic and wide-open series of enticements.”

Much of her recent music has been inspired by a four and a half month journey she took down the Mississippi River by kayak and bicycle in 2009, which is documented on her RiverBlog.

From January 19 through February 24, visitors to The New York Botanical Garden this winter can escape to "Tropical Paradise," a showcase of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory’s permanent collection of tropical trees, flowers, and foliage, including orange-yellow crotons, fuschia bromeliads, and rosy-red hibiscus. Through self-guided strolls, use of a virtual smart phone tour, or participation in docent-led tours of the Conservatory offered daily at 12:30 p.m., visitors can encounter many surprises in the largest Victorian-style glasshouse in the country. Visitors can also enjoy a display of tropical photos from the International Garden Photographer of the Year competition and partake in photography lessons on Sundays. Children can participate in a scavenger hunt that begins in the Conservatory and continues in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden.

Understanding our climate helps us prepare our city for a more sustainable future. Our Urban Park Rangers will introduce you to these important scientific concepts that will help you prepare for the future.

Our climate programs explore topics like climate change, global warming and concepts of sustainability. On our weather programs, we will delve deeply into everyday weather events including lightning and thunder, clouds and the water cycle, and hurricanes and extreme storms.

Visitors gain insight into Winter Workspace artist Zachary Fabri’s creative process and explore the winter landscape as a source of inspiration. Fabri guides participants through exercises that utilize the body as a tool for creativity. Each participant will develop and present a movement to the group. Workshops are open to all visitors ages 12 and over when accompanied by an adult. Learn to identify a few of our inhabitants by their footprints. Weather permitting, we will take a short walk in search of animal tracks, then warm up with some hot chocolate. If not, we will make some tracks of our own (and still enjoy hot chocolate). Either way, we’ll make a cool craft using animal tracks. This program is geared for ages 4 to 8 with adult chaperone. Walk through a scenic area on the western edge of the Park, much of which is off the beaten track for most visitors. See rolling meadows, lake views, bridges of different styles, and a garden with flowers and plants mentioned by Shakespeare.

Location: Diana Ross Playground (in Central Park)

Gateway National Recreation Area presents “Hurricane Sandy: Before and After,” a photo exhibit featuring the effects of Hurricane Sandy on the park. The exhibit compares large scale satellite images from before the hurricane and photos taken afterward by National Park Service (NPS) employees so that the public can assess the damage to the park.

Post-storm photos were taken by NPS employees as part of the recovery effort. The large format—almost two by three feet—reveals the storm’s effects in great detail. Some of the most dramatic images are aerial shots taken from helicopters used by the team to survey the park.

The exhibit will be on display for the next several months in the Multi-Purpose Room at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, located at 100 Cross Bay Boulevard in Queens. The Visitor Center is open daily, free of charge, from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M.

Astronomy programs feature the use of telescopes and binoculars to observe specific astronomical events. Many programs feature astronomy experts and all equipments is provided. Night Sky programs highlight the history and folklore of the solar system, using the naked eye to locate stars and planets. Programs are best enjoyed on clear nights, so please call ahead if weather conditions are not clear.

A series of oil paintings on canvas along with original sketches by Queens artist Gennadyi Gurman. Mr. Gurman is also QBG's Supervising Museum Instructor. This exhibit, in the Gallery of the Visitor & Administration Building is an exploration of life inside repetitive shapes.
