The year 1619 marked the beginning of the slave trade in the Thirteen Colonies, but the first African American elected to office in the United States of America has been documented as early as 1768.

Despite slavery, prejudice and Jim Crow laws, America has seen numerous influential African American leaders who shaped the social, legal, and justice systems. Artists in this exhibition offer broad interpretations on the theme of African Americans in public service. America: The Legacy of African American Public Service celebrates noted government officials, as well as activists and members of the public who dedicated their lives to the greater good of the people.

NYC Parks is pleased to present the exhibition: The Birds of Richmond County. Artist Herb Smith’s interest in painting wildlife, especially birds, goes back to his youth. His ability and technique to capture the structural differences, colors and unique traits of birds by layering oil paint brings a satisfying depth to his work. Paying homage to masters of the Dutch Renaissance Age such as Van Eyck, Van Der Wyden, Rembrandt and Vermeer, his realistic approach creates an accurate quality that tantalizes the viewer’s perception in a way that is true to life.

There will be an opening reception on Thursday, January 14, 2016 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. The exhibit runs through 2-29-16.

Lenape Gallery hours are Monday to Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The gallery is closed on Sundays and holidays. Admission is free.

Each winter, Wave Hill opens Glyndor Gallery as workspace for New York-area artists, giving them the unique opportunity to explore the winter landscape as a source of inspiration. Artists share aspects of their practice and engagement with Wave Hill through hands-on workshops. Workshops begin in Glyndor Gallery with an introduction to the artist’s work, then continue in the Ecology Building or Wave Hill House for the creative activity.

Gathering organic materials in the fall, during the Winter Workspace Gwen Fabricant will expand in scale her printed compositions to make a larger work whose underlying structure will reference an 18th-century Mongolian manuscript. Today, observe natural objects and botanical forms; then capture their essence by using a digital scanner and printer in a multi-step collage process. Zoom in on textures, compose shapes and arrange lines using a collection of plant materials. Visitors aged 12 and over are welcome when accompanied by an adult. Newcomers and practicing artists alike are welcome.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” The installation consists of previously and newly acquired works, all from the original Gracie Mansion period, which have been curated to create a more historically accurate picture of life in New York City during the time of Gracie Mansion’s construction.
