The Land Art Generator Initiative: Freshkills Park is an exhibition of the top 25 designs selected out of 250 submissions from around the globe by artists, architects, designers, engineers, landscape architects, and more. LAGI 2012 was an ideas competition to design a site-specific public artwork that, in addition to its conceptual beauty, has the ability to harness energy cleanly from nature and convert it into electricity for the utility grid. At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in over 100 years. The transformation of what was formerly the world’s largest landfill into a productive and beautiful cultural destination will make the park a symbol of renewal and an expression of how our society can restore balance to its landscape. The top three submissions not only heighten the beauty of the surrounding park land but also provide a gateway into a greater discussion about the preservation of the environment.

The Randall’s Island Park Alliance, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Made Event are pleased to present FLOW, the annual summer art exhibit along the shoreline at Randall’s Island Park in New York City. FLOW is aimed at fostering appreciation of the shoreline through artistic expression, while calling visitors to interact with and care for the Park’s island environment. Each year, FLOW features five site specific projects by participants in the Bronx Museum’s Artists in the Marketplace (AIM) program for emerging artists.

Randall’s Island Park is a unique and remarkable waterfront resource, located in the East River with views of the Queens, Bronx and Manhattan shorelines. New waterfront pathways run along the 4.5-mile shoreline, which includes almost 9 acres of restored salt marsh and freshwater wetlands. The Park also offers a track & field stadium, a golf center, a 20-court tennis center and dozens of new playing fields, as well as the Harlem River Event Site, home of Made Event’s Electric Zoo, a three-day Labor Day weekend concert event at Randall’s Island which draws local and international DJ artists and audience.

FLOW.13 – this year's third annual exhibition – will be open to the public every day from June-November, and will feature five new site-specific installations, all reflecting and encouraging interaction with the Park’s history and environment. The five installations are located along the southern shoreline of Randall's Island Park.

FLOW is made possible through support from Made Event, proud producers of The Electric Zoo Festival, NYC’s largest electronic dance music festival, held annually at Randall’s Island Park.

The FLOW exhibitions express the confluence of art, music and environment at Randall’s Island Park, in the midst of one of the world’s greatest cities.

Mac Demarco, a 21-year old Canadian, released his debut album, Rock and Roll Night Club (RNRNC), just a short while ago in the spring of 2012. This album was accompanied by a barrage of bizarrely funny promo videos, wildly unhinged live performances and a not-so-subtle disparate range of promo photos. More recently, Demarco released his second album, 2. As opposed to RNRNC, 2 is a concerted effort to produce a cohesive work that showcases Mac’s natural ability as a songwriter, singer and producer. Pitchfork reviewed 2 saying how Demarco “writes about life-- both the heavy moments and the mundane ones-- with economy and newfound grace.” Demarco appreciates the work he does and it’s obvious he is presenting himself musically in the most sincere way possible, no matter what happens in his wild videos or live shows.

Join us for the 14th season of our free, outdoor film series! This year's theme, "With Love From..." tours cities from around the globe with a lineup of fantastic films.

DJs hit the stage at 6:00pm and movies begin at sundown.

LINEUP:

July 11 - Ferris Bueller's Day Off
High School truant extraordinaire, Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) plots to take one last grand day off before graduation, touring the streets on Chicago in a Ferrari “borrowed” from a friend’s father while staying one step ahead of principal Rooney (Jeffrey Jones). A master of capturing the trials and triumphs of teenage freedom, Director John Hughes blends satire, social commentary, and pure fun. [PG-13] Short film: Creep by Sharif Anthony. DJ: Still Life

July 18 - Enter the Dragon
Under the guise of an international martial arts competition, Bruce Lee and partners John Saxon and Jim Kelly infiltrate the hidden island fortress of a powerful drug syndicate off the coast of Hong Kong. Perhaps the seminal Kung Fu film of the 1970’s, Lee’s final film features the martial arts master at the height of his career with superbly staged fight scenes in a variety of styles. [R] Short film: Catnip: Egress to Oblivion by Jason Willis DJ: Hahn Solo

July 25 - Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
When young Charlie Bucket finds the final golden ticket wrapped inside a Wonka Bar, he is granted access to the secret mysteries of Mr. Wonka’s (Gene Wilder) chocolate factory. The 1971 musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book whisks five kids into a world of pure imagination complete with chocolate rivers, fizzy lifting drink, and singing Umpa Lumpas. [G] Short film: Irish Folk Furniture by Tony Donoghue DJ: Ayres

August 1 - 8 Mile
Rapper Eminem made his acting debut in this semi-autobiographical journey of a white kid trying to make it as a hip-hop artist in the bombed out heart of inner city Detroit. After freezing up during an important rap battle, the young rapper, Rabbit, thinks he is at a dead end, but his girlfriend (Britney Murphy) helps him build up the courage to take one last shot. [R] Short film: Until the Quiet Comes by Kahlil Joseph DJ: Who Am I

With over 40 years in the music industry, Larry Harlow has made significant contributions to Afro-Cuban music, taking instruments and rhythms and infusing them with his personal musical style. At the famed Latin music label, Fania Records, he became one of the leading Latin music producers in the world, producing over 300 CDs and garnering several GRAMMY nominations.

With his group, Larry Harlow and The Latin Legends Band, they have spread the infectious rhythm of Latin music to audiences around the world. The group has a famed, “thick sound” composed of high pitches from the horn section mingled with the fast, steady beats of a variety of percussions, the harmonic voice of a piano and the vocals of four or five musicians. Larry Harlow and The Latin Legends moves audiences with their music, especially “when the energy builds, the riffs, the singing, the solos, the percussion all lock in…moving at different times but for the same purpose,” according to The New York Times.

DJ Lucho’s early exposure to the harmonious rhythms of Latin music in his Harlem neighborhood nurtured an innate talent that propelled him to become one of the most gifted DJs and producers in the music industry. His interaction with different genres of music has allowed him to develop a unique and versatile style, which was guided by his deep appreciation for various cultures and their musical influences.

Inspired by historical homes, including those in the Bronx, Cara Lynch’s exhibition of prints and installations is a window into the world of intricate patterns from past centuries. House Work explores Lynch’s concern and interest in feminine identity and the home, much like the domestic craft work created by 18th and 19th century housewives. Going beyond simple ornamentation, her intensely hand-worked woodcuts clearly illustrate her belief in the purification of self through meditative labor—quietly expressing frustration, instability and obsession through intricate or repeating patterns influence by historic textiles, window dressings, and wallpaper.NYC Parks is pleased to announce the exhibition House Work, a series of prints and installations by Cara Lynch on view at the Poe Park Visitor Center through October 5, 2013.
