Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

The annual Emerging Artist Fellowship (EAF) Exhibition is a cornerstone of Socrates Sculpture Park’s visual arts programming and is widely acclaimed for the ambition, breadth, and innovation of the works on view. Featuring fifteen artists, EAF14 is a survey of the compelling and diverse state of sculpture today.

Each EAF14 artist has engaged with the larger narrative of public space in a dynamic and daring way, building upon Socrates Sculpture Park’s goal to present socially aware, inspiring art in the public realm. EAF14 artists were selected through a highly competitive process that attracted a broad field of nearly 300 candidates, reviewed by the park’s curatorial advisors Anne Barlow (Executive Director, Art in General) and Joe Sheftel (Joe Sheftel Gallery, New York). Selected EAF14 artists were awarded a 2014 Emerging Artist Fellowship, including 24/7 access to the park’s outdoor studio and facilities, as well as the financial, technical, and curatorial support to realize his or her most ambitious work possible.

NYC Parks’ Ebony Society invites you to celebrate Black History Month with the Arsenal Gallery exhibition The Migration.

In the midst of tremendous upheaval—two world wars and the Great Depression—a vast movement of people, some 6 million African American descendants of the Antebellum South, fled the racial segregation and discrimination of Jim Crow laws for northern and western U.S. cities. The “Great Migration,” as it is commonly termed, caused a seismic societal demographic shift and left an indelible mark on the urbanization of America. Twenty-two artists share their interpretations of this historical epoch and its impact.

NYC Parks is pleased to present the exhibition: “Native Ensemble: Artists Chronicle Staten Island’s Natural Spaces”, featuring local Staten Island artists that will run from February 13 – March 29, 2015, with an opening reception on Thursday, February 12th from 7-9 p.m. in the Lenape Gallery at the Conference House Park Visitor Center. The exhibition is curated by Sarah Yuster.

The eight artists featured in the show: David DiLillo, Ann Marie McDonnell, Michael McWeeney, Gail Middleton, Bill Murphy, Kristi Pfister, Melissa West and Sarah Yuster will present inspired 2-D and 3-D works created in a variety of art mediums that explore Staten Island’s natural elements and open spaces in conventional and unconventional techniques. Allusions to the human narrative in these works give way in an effort to shape the poetic and elusive concept of time and nature.

Lenape Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. For additional information please contact Frank Gessner at (718) 227-1463.

Classes will employ similar modalities of movement like yoga, Pilates and aerobic exercise. Guest classes on Reiki, stress management, tai chi and other subjects will provide an enhanced, comprehensive experience for all participants.

Is your garden group in need of structure and better organization? This workshop will help you to hone the fundamentals of group structure and basics of by-laws. Learn how to write them so that you have a resource to guide how you work together effectively.

While all registered GreenThumb gardens must follow the GreenThumb rules, the by-laws serve as a reference for situations in which there is confusion about how the organization runs or works such as decision-making, membership, etc.

All gardens are strongly encouraged to submit by-laws in order to complete their registration and this workshop will serve as an excellent guide for groups in need of assistance getting their by-laws completed.

This workshop is being provided in partnership with East New York Farms. All gardeners must RSVP in order to attend.

Emita Brady Hill and Janet Butler Munch, editors of Bronx Faces and Voices: Sixteen Stories of Courage and Community, discuss the men and women who tell their personal, uncensored stories of life in the Bronx before, during, and after the troubled years of arson, crime, abandonment, and flight in the 1970s and 80s.

The voices are as eclectic as the borough itself, but all were determined to preserve their communities and combat the notion of the Bronx as an international symbol of urban disaster.

Ms. Hill spent 20 years at Lehman College, CUNY, as chair of romance languages, associate provost, and vice president of institutional advancement before becoming chancellor of Indiana University Kokomo. Ms. Munch is an associate professor and special collections librarian at Lehman College.

Lenape Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. For additional information please contact Frank Gessner at (718) 227-1463.
