Each summer on Saturday morning for the past 59 years, New Yorkers of all ages have listended to Andersen tales and other stories, folktales, and fairytales from around the world told by a group of brilliant storytellers at the Hans Christian Andersen Statue in Central Park. This landmark New York event continues this summer, with storytelling happening every Saturday from June through September.

On July 18th, Julia Morris will share the story "The Wild Swans," by H.C. Andersen, and Julie Pasqual will tell the Puerto Rican story, "Juan Bobo and the Pig".

Storytelling is held rain or shine. The stories are appropriate for children six years old and up. Parents or guardians are asked to sit with their children.

This free program is funded by the Hans Christian Andersen Story Telling Center, Inc.

NYC Parks and Bike New York are proud to present Learn to Ride classes. In these free classes, we’ll teach children the fundamentals of bicycling, preparing them for years of safe and confident riding.

This class teaches a safe, easy, effective way to learn to ride. Using this “balance first” method, parents help get their children rolling while the child does most of the work. Participants learn the basics of balancing, starting, stopping, and steering a bike. Most people learn to ride their bike while taking the class, but even if they don’t, they will leave with an easy, hands-free, crash-free, and low-stress way to learn to ride.

Participants must bring their own bike and helmet. To register, please visit the Bike New York webpage.

Effective dialogue is a key element of most writing, and that’s certainly the case in crime fiction. In this workshop, we’ll discuss how to create strong dialogue that reveals character, propels your plot, breathes life into a scene and adds conflict and other necessary elements to your story. In addition to looking at examples of what works and doesn’t work in some noir classics and other novels, we’ll do exercises to hone your dialogue writing, paying particular attention to characterization, proper formatting and revision. Bring an excerpt of your story that contains or could use dialogue, along with a pen and paper.

Join us this summer at the Wyckoff Farmhouse for a spinning and felting workshop. This workshop is part of a series of six workshops for adults (and teens) in what we’re calling “creative homesteading”. Get your hands dirty in the garden, experiment with natural dyes, learn about herbal medicine, preserve your harvest, and more at the oldest house in New York!

This workshop focuses on the process of cloth making from raw fleece and roving (cleaned, carded fleece) to yarn and felted fabrics. We will be spinning—both with a drop spindle as well as with a spinning wheel. We will be felting—both needle felting and water felting. We will be creating beads, patches, paintings, and creatures. If you can imagine it, you can felt it! During the workshop there will be discussions of the methods used throughout the history of cloth making. Be prepared to leave this class with something wonderful that you’ve made.

Famed New Yorker Eliza Jumel, who rose from rags to riches, and her equally illustrious house will mark their anniversaries with a triple-barreled program at the Morris-Jumel Mansion. The celebration will begin with a richly illustrated presentation, led by MJM Executive Director Carol Ward, on the history of the mansion, which is turning 250 years old this year. Next, historian Margaret Oppenheimer will commemorate the 150th anniversary of Eliza Jumel's death with a short reading from her forthcoming biography, The Remarkable Rise of Eliza Jumel: A Story of Marriage and Money in the Early Republic. The day's program will end with a 15-minute walk to Trinity Church's uptown cemetery, where attendees will discover just who is buried in the Jumel crypt (surprises to come!). The program is free with admission to the mansion, though reservations are required. Call (212) 923-8008 to RSVP.

In this 18th century play by Oliver Goldsmith, wealthy countryman Mr. Hardcastle arranges for his daughter Kate to meet Charles Marlow, the son of a rich Londoner, hoping the pair will marry. Unfortunately, Marlow is nervous around upper-class women, yet the complete opposite around working-class women. On his first acquaintance with Kate, the latter realises she will have to pretend to be 'common', or Marlow will not woo her. Thus Kate 'stoops to conquer', by posing as a maid, hoping to put Marlow at his ease so he falls for her.

Located along the esplanade leading up to the recently opened High Bridge, Oh Sit! 14 Sculptors Consider the Chair is a group exhibition of nine artists’ public artworks. In a frantic world, finding a chair can be almost impossible and settling comfortably into one can be an enormous satisfaction. Sitting in the wrong seat can cause anxiety and an even pain. Exhibiting artists Dan Bergman, Allan Cyprys, Robert Dell, Gregoire Ferland, Esther Grillo, Christina Jorge, Siena Gillann Porta, Herb Rosenberg and Chuck von Schmidt respond imaginatively to the notion of sitting or using a chair. Oh Sit! is framed as an imperative, a command—a way of asking the viewer to look and really consider the concept “chair” both objectively and subjectively.

The mission of Hudson Warehouse is to present the classics in exciting productions inspired by our past and relevant to our present day.

Watch classics and soon-to-be classics handpicked by NYC Parks' Arts, Culture and Fun series.

Perhaps the greatest movie ever shot in two days, Little Shop of Horrors was originally conceived as a followup to Roger Corman's black comedy A Bucket of Blood (1959). Jonathan Haze plays Seymour Krelboin, a schlemiel's schlemiel who works at the Skid Row flower shop of Mr. Mushnick (Mel Welles). Experimenting in his spare time, Seymour develops a new plant species that he hopes will lead him to fame and fortune. Unfortunately, the mutated plant -- named Audrey Junior, in honor of Seymour's girlfriend Audrey (Jackie Joseph)—subsists on blood and human flesh. It also talks, or rather, commands: "Feed Me! FEEEEED ME!" Before long, the luckless Seymour has fed his plant the bodies of a railroad detective, a sadistic dentist, and a flashy trollop. Meanwhile, Mr. Mushnik, who has stumbled onto Seymour's secret, has inadvertently offered up a burglar (played by Charles Griffith, who also wrote the script and supplied the plant's voice) as a midnight snack for the voracious, ever-growing Audrey Junior. (When the plant blooms, the faces of its various victims are reproduced in its flowers.) Paraphrase from Swank website.

Space is limited and admission is on a first-come, first-served basis.
