Seven years ago, the city launched MillionTreesNYC with an ambitious goal: to plant and care for one million new trees across the city. The benefits to be gained were clear: improved air and water quality; reduced pollution from storm water runoff, flooding and erosion; and reduced energy costs, to name a few.

But MillionTreesNYC is just the first step in enhancing and preserving New York City's urban forest. Tree care and stewardship are the next critical steps to ensuring the survival of our urban forest.

This spring's MillionTreesNYC forest restoration day will focus on stewardship and caring for young forests that have already been planted. In this endeavor, MillionTreesNYC and NYC Parks are joined by the Natural Areas Conservancy, a non-profit organization that was formed to restore and preserve the natural areas of New York City, including forests and wetlands, to enhance the lives of all New Yorkers.

Since 2007, we have come a long way towards reaching our goal of planting one million trees, and we are confident that we will get there. We ask you now to continue the work that we've done together and to join us in meeting the next challenge to ensure a sustainable city.

Volunteer forest restoration stewardship activities will include:

  • Removing invasive weeds
  • Picking up litter
  • Spreading mulch

Registration is full for this event.

Join NYC Parks in protecting and stabilizing new dunes in Rockaway. Dunes are essential for protection against damaging coastal storms. Beach grass helps to increase the size of dunes by trapping windblown sand and its fibrous root system strengthens dunes by keeping sand in place.

Volunteers will plant beach grass along the crest of the dune. Please dress in warm, comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes, and bring a reusable water bottle and snacks. There will be no place to store personal items.

Space is limited and pre-registration is required. This event is rain or shine. Planting dates are subject to change. Please check the website the day of the event to confirm.

NYC Parks and the Natural Areas Conservancy would like to thank the following partners and donors for supporting New York City's efforts to build and stabilize dunes: Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Fund for the City of New York, Leon Levy Foundation, NYC Service, Partnerships for Parks, and Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.

<![CDATA[Talking about History - Rufus King's Reading in London: Using the History of Rome to Understand the French Revolution]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/04/26/talking-about-history http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/04/26/talking-about-history Date: April 26, 2014

From 1799-1803, when Rufus King was serving as Minister to Great Britain, he read Edward Gibbon’s The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire and recorded excerpts from this book and others in two notebooks, known as commonplace books. On first glance these excerpts, or commonplaces, seem random, but every commonplace book has an individualized organization behind it.

In this lecture, David J. Gary, Yale University, shows how an examination of these notebooks allows us to understand King’s fears, anxieties, and challenges as he looked at the world as a statesman and diplomat of the new and weak American nation. Why did King select the material in these commonplace books?
How did he read Gibbon’s masterpiece? Why did he make such an effort to read this book during his busy diplomatic tour? Learn how King’s commonplace books reflect his desire to understand the quickly changing social, political, and cultural landscape wrought by the French Revolution.
