“Women in Comics” celebrates the contributions from female creators in the sequential arts medium known as comics. Since the inception of this American Pop culture, women have always played a role as pencilers, inkers and even writers in the comic industry, but were never known because of their pseudonyms which rendered them sexless and misled the public to believe that they were males. The reasoning behind the pseudonyms was related to gaining employment as a writer or artist. Decades later, women today still are challenged to make their mark in a cartoon world overshadowed by muscles, testosterone and capes. “Women in Comics” unveils the mask of these heroine comic artists, writers, film makers, animators, characters and self publishers. “Women in Comics” is a Bronx Heroes® event and is curated by Ray Felix and Regine Sawyer.

The Randall’s Island Park Alliance, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Made Event are pleased to present FLOW, the annual summer art exhibit along the shoreline at Randall’s Island Park in New York City. FLOW is aimed at fostering appreciation of the shoreline through artistic expression, while calling visitors to interact with and care for the Park’s island environment. Each year, FLOW features five site specific projects by participants in the Bronx Museum’s Artists in the Marketplace (AIM) program for emerging artists.

Randall’s Island Park is a unique and remarkable waterfront resource, located in the East River with views of the Queens, Bronx and Manhattan shorelines. New waterfront pathways run along the 4.5-mile shoreline, which includes almost 9 acres of restored salt marsh and freshwater wetlands. The Park also offers a track & field stadium, a golf center, a 20-court tennis center and dozens of new playing fields, as well as the Harlem River Event Site, home of Made Event’s Electric Zoo, a three-day Labor Day weekend concert event at Randall’s Island which draws local and international DJ artists and audience.

FLOW.13 – this year's third annual exhibition – will be open to the public every day from June-November, and will feature five new site-specific installations, all reflecting and encouraging interaction with the Park’s history and environment. The five installations are located along the southern shoreline of Randall's Island Park.

FLOW is made possible through support from Made Event, proud producers of The Electric Zoo Festival, NYC’s largest electronic dance music festival, held annually at Randall’s Island Park.

The FLOW exhibitions express the confluence of art, music and environment at Randall’s Island Park, in the midst of one of the world’s greatest cities.

Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre.

Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass.

Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre’s Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.

The CityParks PuppetMobile is the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

New York soul songstress Meli'sa Morgan began her professional career as a backup singer, working with a number of major artists including Whitney Houston and Chaka Khan. Morgan's debut single, a cover of Prince’s hit “Do Me Baby,” shot to the top of the charts and the album of the same name hit the top five. It showed Morgan to be an appealing, sultry singer and a developing songwriter. Following up with another hit, “Do You Still Love Me” as well as her sophomore disc, Good Love, Morgan became well known as one of R&B’s songbirds and continues to contribute guest vocals to a number of artists today.

Dance music legend Fonda Rae was famed for combining her sexy sound to hot dance tracks embarking on a singing career that has produced an enviable reputation. Rae burst onto the music scene and was introduced to the world with the song "Deputy of Love" a smash hit that climbed fast to #1 Position on the Billboard dance charts. Then she recorded "Over Like A Fat Rat" which by many was named one of the best titles of the 80s, and until this day is still loved and played repeatedly around the globe. She has performed numerous engagements with renowned artists such as Isaac Hayes, Mary J. Blidge and Carl Thomas.

Vocalist Alicia Myers was a charter member of Al Hudson & the Soul Partners, which later became One Way, before she departed in the early 80s for a solo career. She earned a top ten hit with “You Get the Best From Me (Say, Say, Say)” in 1984, although her strongest record was the Gospel/Soul album, I Want to Thank You. In 2011, Myers released a new album, entitled Peace Of Mind.

One of Hip-Hop's first super-producers, Marley Marl was an early innovator in the art of sampling, that resulted in some of the sharpest beats and hooks during rap’s Golden Age. As the founder of Cold Chillin’ Records, Marl assembled a roster filled with some of the finest Hip-Hop talent in New York during the 1980s. His production work for those and many other artists boasted a bright, booming, and robust sound that helped move street-level Hip-Hop’s into more mainstream territory. His production credits span Hip-Hop royalty including, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Capone-N-Noreaga, and Fat Joe.

“Doctor” Bob Lee is one of the most recognized entertainment personalities in New York, with his career in radio, music and television spanning over 30 years. You can hear Lee on WBLS at midnight every Sunday through Thursday as he spins today’s R&B and Classical Soul hits until 5 A.M, and on air every day with his “Daily Dose" series tackling health issues which affect the community.

At the Hotel Transylvania, Dracula's (Adam Sandler) lavish five-stake resort, monsters and their families can live it up, free to be the monsters they are without humans to bother them. On one special weekend, Dracula has invited some of the world's most famous monsters--Frankenstein and his bride, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, a family of werewolves, and more--to celebrate his daughter Mavis's 118th birthday. For Drac, catering to all of these legendary monsters is no problem--but his world could come crashing down when one ordinary guy stumbles on the hotel and takes a shine to Mavis.

The Land Art Generator Initiative: Freshkills Park is an exhibition of the top 25 designs selected out of 250 submissions from around the globe by artists, architects, designers, engineers, landscape architects, and more. LAGI 2012 was an ideas competition to design a site-specific public artwork that, in addition to its conceptual beauty, has the ability to harness energy cleanly from nature and convert it into electricity for the utility grid. At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in over 100 years. The transformation of what was formerly the world’s largest landfill into a productive and beautiful cultural destination will make the park a symbol of renewal and an expression of how our society can restore balance to its landscape. The top three submissions not only heighten the beauty of the surrounding park land but also provide a gateway into a greater discussion about the preservation of the environment.

Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form that has evolved over centuries into an exciting combination of martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. Capoeira was developed in Brazil, but its history extends to Africa and tribes from Angola. Slaves living on Brazilian Plantations who weren’t allowed to openly practice traditional forms of self-defense developed an ingenious method of disguising their training by combining it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments. Some of capoeira’s benefits include strength, flexibility, stamina, overall fitness and confidence. Benefits of capoeira for kids include promoting social interaction and sense of belonging, building confidence, discipline and self esteem, promoting a healthy lifestyle so children become active, and healthy, and develop cultural awareness and tolerance. Wear comfortable clothing.

<![CDATA[Force MDs / Horace Brown / Jeff Redd / Marley Marl / hosted by Bob Lee in association with WBLS]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/07/17/force-mds-horace-brown-jeff-redd-marley-marl-hosted-by-bob-lee-in-association-with-wbls http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/07/17/force-mds-horace-brown-jeff-redd-marley-marl-hosted-by-bob-lee-in-association-with-wbls Date: July 17, 2013

New York born and bred, The Force MDs began their climb to fame by singing and dancing on Greenwich Village street corners and the Staten Island ferry. Among the first R&B vocal groups to intermix catchy Doo-Wop affected consonances with Hip-Hop beats, the Force MDs versatile mix of credible urban savvy with smooth showbiz pleases both B-Boys and traditional Soul fans.

R&B sensation Horace Brown made his first break in 1991 after Jodeci’s DeVante Swing discovered one of his impressive demos. He reached popular success in 1996 after the release of his debut self titled album, which featured a number of well known artists including Sean “Puffy” Combs and Faith Evans, and included the hit single “One for the Money.” Today, this R&B veteran continues to write and perform, displaying his remarkable musical skills to all.

With a clear vision and passion for music and performing, Jeff Redd has had a long, successful musical career. As a winner of GRAMMY, American Music, Soul Train and Billboard Awards, Redd has worked as both a performer and in the production field. Known for jumpstarting Mary J. Blige’s career, Redd now has his own independent record label. His song, “You Called and Told Me” is still considered to be a top single in the R&B world. With various other projects under his belt, including a long list of soundtracks and albums, Redd’s music has always, and continues to inspire.

Ben Sollee, a Kentucky native known for his thrilling cello-playing that incorporates new techniques to create a unique mix of folk, bluegrass, jazz and R&B. Sollee possesses rough, smooth-smoky vocal stylings and a knack for intricate arrangements that has brought about comparisons to Sufjan Stevens. Sollee shares himself completely with his audience, whether it is personal lyrics, or his commitment to the environment.

In 2007 NPR’s Morning Edition named him one of the Top Ten Unknown Artists of the Year and one year later, he released an EP of his own material, If You’re Gonna Lead My Country, and followed it with a full-length album named Learning to Bend. In 2010 and 2012, Ben Sollee made it to the Top Heatseekers Billboard charts with Half Made Men and Dear Companion. Sollee can often be found riding a bicycle to his concerts (cello strapped to the back), which have become legendary for their intimacy.
