Join Urban Bush Women as they celebrate their 30th anniversary year with an evening of special performances that showcase the best of the company's repertoire as well as a SummerStage premiere.

Founded in 1984 by choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Urban Bush Women (UBW) seeks to bring the untold and under-told histories and stories of disenfranchised people to light through dance. The company presents this from a woman-centered perspective and as members of the African Diaspora community in order to create a more equitable balance of power in the dance world and beyond. UBW continues to use dance as both the message and the medium to bring together diverse audiences through innovative choreography, community collaboration and artistic leadership development.

The company will premiere Chalabati, a new work choreographed by Zollar, with choreographic assistance by Maria Bauman for dance students at Virginia Commonwealth University, Florida State University, and recently Southern Methodist University. Chalabati is a work that explores journey, memory and ritual retelling of a shared history. Inspired by the music of the Gnawa people (Morocco), the piece will explore a community coming together to remind itself of its strength, power and generosity.

Laurie M. Taylor/Soul Movement (LMTSM) is a dance company of “movement story tellers” who delve into the emotional truth of the human experience. The company’s style is based on “sound perception,” how rhythm, tone and texture can be physically embodied and expressed through movement. Fusing Jazz, African Diaspora and Hip-Hop sensibilities, Laurie uses her rich Liberian and American (the American South) cultural background in her work, rendering a lush, curvilinear contemporary dance style. LMTSM’s rich repertory explores the full spectrum of the human experience whether it be the courageousness of lunch counter sit-ins, or being caught up in whirlwind of love and passion. For Laurie, music is the primary impulse for movement, and she has forged close collaborations with musical partners including Blue Note recording Artist Derrick Hodge, composer and violinist Jessie Montgomery, and arranger/violinist Stephanie Matthews. The company’s latest works go deeper into their signature style of “sound perception,” creating a dynamic dialogue between movement and music.

Raised by musical parents, it was apparent at an early age that Tewodros Kassahun, (now know as Teddy Afro) had a deep love of music. Over the past ten years, Teddy has emerged as the number one voice in Ethiopia, breaking records for album sales and show attendance. He is known far and wide as the rising star of East Africa. Using Reggae rhythms combined with traditional sounds his songs are sung exclusively in the national language of Ethiopia, Amharic. Influenced by Ethiopian Maestro Tilahun Gessesse and international Reggae superstar Bob Marley, he sings of freedom from tyranny and self-emancipation.

Noura Mint Seymali is a nationally beloved star and one of Mauritania’s foremost musical emissaries. Having begun her career at age 13 as a supporting vocalist with her legendary step-mother Dimi Mint Abba, Noura Mint Seymali was reared in a transitive culture where sounds from across the Sahara, the Magreb, and West Africa coalesce in the dynamic language of the Moorish griot. Fueled by the exploratory sound of her husband Jeiche Ould Chighaly’s distortion-fueled psych guitar lines and a declaritive rhythm section, Ousmane Touré (bass) and Matthew Tinari (drums), Noura Mint Seymali has already made a formidable debut on the international stage. Performing at events like Festival-au-Desert (Mali), Hayy Festival (Egypt), and Festival Timitar (Morocco) and collaborating with artists like Tinariwen, Bassekou Kouyaté, and Baaba Maal, Noura Mint Seymali is steadily gaining wider recognition, determined to bring Mauritanian music to the world.

Hahu Dance Group are a contemporary modern traditional group that aims to promote Ethiopian culture, art and indigenous knowledge all over the world. Hahu won Ethiopian Idol in 2011, and represents Ethiopian multiculturalism, by including four traditional dancers each hailing from different ethnic groups, showing a true sense of community. The group’s early works were inspired by the poor Addis neighborhoods and performances were focused on community awareness creation and empowerment. The group has been working in collaboration with nongovernmental organizations (Andugna dance company, Hope for children organization, Music Media, Addis Ababa city administration theater, A.A. Culture and tourism bureau) on various community issues.

Celebrating 43 years of dance and culture, Ballet Hispanico is recognized as the nation’s premier Latino dance organization. Led by Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro, the Company boasts a rich and diverse repertory of over 100 works by the foremost choreographers and emerging artists of our time. The works expand on founder Tina Ramirez’s legacy of exploring the diversity of Latino culture through a fusion of Latin and contemporary dance powered by theatricality and passion. The Company has performed for an audience of nearly 3 million, throughout 11 countries, on 3 continents. Ballet Hispanico will perform a dynamic quartet of works including Asuka, a celebration of the music of Celia Cruz through the lens of the Latino experience. Cruz, renowned as the "Queen of Salsa," captured the heart of Latinos the world over and became a symbol of perseverance for many. Through rich imagery and humor, choreographer Eduardo Vilaro explores the struggles of departure from one’s homeland and the exuberance of success experienced by a community. Join us as we pay tribute to the life of Ms. Cruz on this special date which coincides with her 2002 appearance at SummerStage, as well as anniversary of her passing in 2003.

A Palo Seco is a New York based Flamenco Company that strives to develop a unique voice, employing their Flamenco expertise, while also taking into account the context in which they live. Their work offers an innovative way of looking at Flamenco, combining traditional techniques with a modern, metropolitan flare. Run by artistic director and choreographer, Rebeca Tomas, the company debuted its first production in May 2010 at Theatre 80 St. Marks (NYC). They have also appeared throughout the U.S. at venues such as the Chicago Flamenco Festival and Jacob’s Pillow Dance. “A Palo Seco” is a phrase that refers to a bare-bones style of flamenco music, often consisting of singing or percussion alone. This stripped-down aesthetic has become a central theme in the company’s work, characterizing its biggest departures from tradition, while also rooting their work in the emotional rawness that lies at the heart of the art of Flamenco.

Founded by Ronald K. Brown in 1985 and based in Brooklyn, New York, EVIDENCE, A DANCE COMPANY focuses on the fusion of African dance with contemporary choreography and spoken word. This work provides a unique view of human struggles, tragedies, and triumphs. Brown uses movement as a way to reinforce the importance of community in African American culture and to acquaint audiences with the beauty of African forms and rhythms. Evidence tours to some 30 communities in the United States annually. It has traveled to Cuba, Brazil, England, France, Greece, Hungary, Hawaii, Ireland, Holland, Mexico, South Africa, Nigeria, Senegal, and in 2010 joined the U.S. State Department’s DanceMotion USA tour to perform, teach master classes and conduct demonstrations. Evidence brings arts, education and cultural/historical connections to communities that have historically lacked these experiences. Annually, the company reaches and audience of more than 30,000.Join them as they perform Come Ye, a piece inspired by the music and sociopolitical legacies of artists/activists Nina Simone and Fela Kuti. This multimedia work utilizes Mr. Brown’s signature style of kinetic storytelling through African, Caribbean, modern, ballet and social dance styles to summon warriors, angels and activists dedicated to the pursuit of liberation and peace amidst the strug- gles of human conflict. This work includes music by Nina Simone (“Come Ye,” “Sunday in Savannah,” and “Revolution”) and Fela Kuti (“Kalakuta” and “Coffin for Head of State”) and a video collage by Robert Penn.

SummerStage Kids presented by Disney presents Harlem Family Day, a day dedicated to engaging young audiences and their families through thrilling performances! Families will also have the opportunity to participate in interactive music & dance workshops + face painting and more!

Shine and The Moonbeams is family music's first Soul band. They bring a fresh soulful perspective to the world that belongs to families all across the planet. Take two outstanding NYC musicians with eclectic musical tastes and influences, combine their unique perspectives, add a backing band, and witness the result: a soulful, groove-heavy R&B musical extravaganza in a Rock and Roll package, capturing the sweetness, uncertainty, and simplicity of youth.

MOONA LUNA is the kindie group that the New York Daily News says is providing “the missing soundtrack for bilingual/bicultural kids.” After making a splash on the family music scene with their accordion-driven, Latin-inspired debut album, Piñata Party (2011), Moona Luna delivered something fresh in its sophomore album, Vamos, Let's Go! (2013). Songwriter and bandleader, Sandra Velasquez, found inspiration in American pop hits of the 50’s and 60’s, and staying true to her bilingual mission, crafted Spanish and English lyrics for each song. Having bilingual lyrics is just the icing on the cake because the tunes are so finger - snapping good and cater to extremely wide audiences.

Ten year old Kojo Odu Roney loved the drums even as a baby. His father is jazz saxophonist Antoine Roney; his mother Nia Love, an established choreographer and dancer; and his uncle trumpeter Wallace Roney; Kojo sat down to his first drum set at the age of two and has never looked back. At such a young age Kojo understood how to play the drum set in jazz setting. By 4 years old, he was able to play with jazz ensembles confidently. Practicing daily helped Kojo match his understanding of rhythm and applying it to the drum set. By the age of 8 years old, he went on his first tour in Europe, which is the start of his professional music encounters. His travels included France, Italy, Switzerland and Greece. He also visited other countries including Serbia, Germany, Austria and Poland. Kojo shares the stage and performs with many professional musicians including Buster Williams, Darrell Green, Billy Spaceman Paterson, Rashaan Carter, Brandee Younger, Saadi Zain, Emanuel Ruffler and of course his father, mother and uncle. Some great highlights of Kojo's many experiences is having the chance to sit in with The Incredible Lenny White, The Great Al Foster and legendary Jazz drummer, Roy Haynes, while great jazz drummers Louis Hayes and Grady Tate were in the audience and also having the chance to becoming friends with The Great Jimmy Cobb. Kojo currently performs with his dad and uncle.
