Seven years ago, the city launched MillionTreesNYC with an ambitious goal: to plant and care for one million new trees across the city. The benefits to be gained were clear: improved air and water quality; reduced pollution from storm water runoff, flooding and erosion; and reduced energy costs, to name a few.
But MillionTreesNYC is just the first step in enhancing and preserving New York City's urban forest. Tree care and stewardship are the next critical steps to ensuring the survival of our urban forest.
This spring's MillionTreesNYC forest restoration day will focus on stewardship and caring for young forests that have already been planted. In this endeavor, MillionTreesNYC and NYC Parks are joined by the Natural Areas Conservancy, a non-profit organization that was formed to restore and preserve the natural areas of New York City, including forests and wetlands, to enhance the lives of all New Yorkers.
Since 2007, we have come a long way towards reaching our goal of planting one million trees, and we are confident that we will get there. We ask you now to continue the work that we've done together and to join us in meeting the next challenge to ensure a sustainable city.
Volunteer forest restoration stewardship activities will include:
  • Removing invasive weeds
  • Picking up litter
  • Spreading mulch

Register online, registration is required.

Public green spaces contribute to the health and beauty of our city, and provide environmental benefits like cleaning the air and capturing stormwater.

We need your help to keep them functioning. We invite you to walk and learn as we explore a diversity of public green spaces, cared for by local stewards and NYC Parks maintenance crews. The tour will take you through recently installed bioswales, street trees, and greenstreets, and introduce you to some of the community volunteers that care for them. Stewardship is an important component of our sustainability work.

As you learn about NYC Parks’ green infrastructure goals and construction and planting practices, hear from the everyday people who are contributing to sustainability and climate resiliency goals by helping to care for their local street tree, greenstreet or bioswale. Local groups are actively engaged in stewardship in this neighborhood and will share some insights on how they are strengthening their community through environmental stewardship. We'll finish our tour at the nexus of community activity at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket, where participants can visit local vendors or continue on their own through Prospect Park.
