Treat your child to a day camp like they've only imagined at Van Cortlandt House Museum.

Immersed in the everyday life of a child in 18th century and dressed in period style clothing, campers learn about the Van Cortlandt Family and the history that happened here all while having fun.

Children will also travel in time back to the early years of the Revolutionary War and experience the life of a soldier in General George Washington’s army. They will lend a hand with pitching tents and setting up camp. “Enlistment” in the army, military drill, and reconnaissance, are also part of the action.

Camp is lead by Van Cortlandt House Museum’s professional staff, talented living history volunteers, and college students studying material culture and art education. Daily activities for Adventures in Time Summer History Camp are designed in keeping with New York State 4th grade curriculum standards and are appropriate for children ages 6 - 12.

Adventures in Time Summer History Camp is open to all children with a sense of adventure who have completed 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th grade (or the equivalent) in the Spring of 2014. We encourage early enrollment, as camp space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Van Cortlandt House Museum is owned by the City of New York Parks & Recreation, operated by The National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New York, and a member of The Historic House Trust of New York City.

Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form that has evolved over centuries into an exciting combination of martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. Some of capoeira’s benefits include strength, flexibility, stamina, overall fitness and confidence. Benefits of capoeira for kids include promoting social interaction and sense of belonging, building confidence, discipline and self esteem, promoting a healthy lifestyle so children become active, and healthy, and develop cultural awareness and tolerance. Wear comfortable clothing.

Capoeira was developed in Brazil, but its history extends to Africa and tribes from Angola. Slaves living on Brazilian Plantations who weren’t allowed to openly practice traditional forms of self-defense developed an ingenious method of disguising their training by combining it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments.

This Dendrology 'walk and talk' is part of a new summer program, a thematic series of nature walks, talks, and art workshops, designed to encompass the various natural elements of Conference House Park.

Conference House Park is home to many diverse and unique plant and tree communities within its 265 acres. The communities range from tall maturing forest stands, young groves, open fields, pocket forested wetlands and wet woods. The Park contains a rare maritime Northern Hackberry forest (due to the high calcium levels, from the high number of discarded oyster shells in the soil).

This educational 'walk and talk' is designed to increase the appreciation and understanding of the numerous tree and plant species found within the various forest types contained the park.

Multiple events (including drawing workshops and dune walk) are running through August; please see the events calendar for the other dates.

You worked hard all spring and summer, tilling, sowing, weeding and pruning. Now is the time to reap what you sow before it goes to seed. We will cover basic ways to preserve what you’ve grown in the garden for the long winter ahead: drying, canning, freezing, pickling. Additionally, we will extend the uses of your bounty by looking at alternative ways to use your herbs and spices in the kitchen and around the house.

(faux)H is a series of hands-on workshops held at the Wyckoff farmhouse Museum, exploring traditional farm based skills: natural dying, alternative home economics, and preservation. Employing dye plants and crops grown on the Wyckoff farm, situated in the middle Brooklyn, (faux)H will be a collaborative experiment in the lost art of learning-by-doing. Join artist, Lisa Sikorski on a journey of learning about the slow process of making by hand and from the earth.
