Please arrive at 9 a.m. sharp to be placed with a group. Bring water and gloves (if you have them). Wear comfortable long pants, clothes that can get dirty, sturdy shoes, a hat, and sunscreen. Volunteers must be older than 10 years old.

  • How to identify trees in New York City
  • Benefits trees bring to our city
  • Tree Care - Water! Weed! Mulch! Plant flowers!

Workshops are focused on active tree care, so come ready to get your hands dirty and care for street trees along the sidewalk. Please wear closed-toed shoes and layered clothing that can get dirty. Tree stewardship is similar to gardening work, involving bending and kneeling on the sidewalk. Children are always welcome, and must be accompanied by an adult. All participants will care for trees using small gardening tools and watering buckets. Please dress for light gardening work, wear close-toed shoes, and bring a refillable water bottle. All MillionTreesNYC events are rain or shine.

Join us monthly on third Saturdays from 10:00am to 1:00pm from May to September.

Projects are seasonal and vary from week to week, and could include weeding, mulching, trellising, path or fence maintenance, moving soil, or working with compost. Visit the Battery Urban Farm Community Programs page for exact dates and more information.

Saturday Open Volunteer Hours are for all ages, however volunteers under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Any volunteers under 18 must bring a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian.

All volunteers must wear closed-toed shoes and weather-appropriate clothing (boots if it has rained recently, layers in cool weather, a hat and sunscreen in the summer are strongly recommended). Please also bring a water bottle.

We will work in most weather, including light rain. The following conditions will constitute cause for automatic cancellation of volunteer hours: heavy-driving rain, flooding, thunder and lightning storms, and temperatures upwards of 93 degrees. Help water and care for the 110,000+ new street trees that have been planted across New York City! Join the MillionTreesNYC to give trees a little "Tree LC" and stewardship, and help keep New York City green by coming to a free MillionTreesNYC tree care workshop where you will learn:

  • How to identify trees in New York City
  • Benefits trees bring to our city
  • Tree Care - Water! Weed! Mulch! Plant flowers!

Workshops are focused on active tree care, so come ready to get your hands dirty and care for street trees along the sidewalk. Please wear closed-toed shoes and layered clothing that can get dirty. Tree stewardship is similar to gardening work, involving bending and kneeling on the sidewalk. Children are always welcome, and must be accompanied by an adult. All participants will care for trees using small gardening tools and watering buckets. Please dress for light gardening work, wear close-toed shoes, and bring a refillable water bottle. All MillionTreesNYC events are rain or shine.
