Jordan L. Mott bought this portion of the Bronx in 1841 and transformed it into an industrial community where innovations such as the coal-burning stove first came into existence. Although the area has changed, there remain portions of the old neighborhood such as brownstones and old factories buildings that reflect the Bronx as one of the country’s oldest industrial empires. In celebration of the Bronx County centennial, Bronx County Historical Society educator Angel Hernandez leads this exciting tour through Old Mott Haven with his extensive knowledge of the neighborhood as well as the 1840s Bronx industrial boom. This tour begins at the southeast corner of E. 138th Street and Third Avenue, outside the #6 train station.

Tour cost $10 for BCHS members, $15 for non-members. Please make reservations by contacting The Society at (718) 881-8900 to reserve your spot. The tours generally run for 75 minutes.

Hiking is the ultimate way to enjoy the outdoors and reduce stress. Regardless of the intensity level, it is a great way to burn calories and stay fit.

Our Night Hikes allow participants to see parks in a different light, and are great for families.

Hiking programs feature intensity levels ranging from light, (a leisurely stroll on mostly paved paths), to moderate (longer, faster paced hikes on rugged terrain), to vigorous (long distance, with hills and rugged terrain). For all hiking programs we recommend wearing comfortable shoes or boots, and packing water and a light snack.

The signature annual event at Freshkills Park, Sneak 'Peak' is a festival unlike any other. The site is normally closed throughout the year as we continue park development and construction, but once a year we throw open the gates and hold a celebration! Join us to celebrate the potential of the future of Freshkills Park with a day of fun with activities like kayaking, biking, birding, public art, puppetry workshop, walking tours, climbing walls, an informational fair, and kite flying, all of which offer a glimpse of what the park will have to offer. Last year 3,500 people joined us for the celebration of Staten Island's newest jewel of parkland - this year promises to be bigger and better than ever!

Visit the Freshkills Park Alliance's Sneak Peak page to find out more! Parking for the festival will be available at 250 Wild Avenue, behind the Showplace Bowling Alley off of Victory Blvd. Free shuttles will run to the festival from the Staten Island Ferry, just hop off the ferry and on to a direct shuttle right to the celebration without any hassle! Alternatively, the S62 bus runs down Victory Blvd. to the park.

This event is organized by the Freshkills Park Alliance, Department of Sanitation, Staten Island Recreation, Kayak Staten Island, Staten Island Museum, Staten Island Arts.

Hiking is the ultimate way to enjoy the outdoors and reduce stress. Regardless of the intensity level, it is a great way to burn calories and stay fit. Our Urban Park Ranger hiking guides will introduce you to the hidden gems of New York City. On Nature exploration hikes we will discover the plants and animals that inhabit the urban forest. Hiking programs feature intensity levels ranging from light (leisurely stroll on mostly paved paths), to moderate (longer, faster paced hikes on rugged terrain), to vigorous (long distance, with hills and rugged terrain). For all hiking programs we recommend wearing comfortable shoes or boots, and packing water and a light snack.

Hiking is the ultimate way to enjoy the outdoors and reduce stress. Regardless of the intensity level, it is a great way to burn calories and stay fit. Our Urban Park Ranger hiking guides will introduce you to the hidden gems of New York City. Hiking programs feature intensity levels ranging from light (leisurely stroll on mostly paved paths), to moderate (longer, faster paced hikes on rugged terrain), to vigorous (long distance, with hills and rugged terrain). This challenging eight mile hike winds its way through most of the park's many diverse forests and ecosystems. For all hiking programs we recommend wearing comfortable shoes or boots, and packing water and a light snack.

Pre-registration encouraged. To register, visit www.nyc.gov/parks/rangers/register on Wednesday, October 29th. If registrations exceed program capacity, participants will be chosen through lottery to ensure fairness in the selection process.

East of Citifield (the New York Mets baseball stadium) is a sewer-less hardscrabble area of auto junkyards and related businesses that has twice beaten back attempts at redevelopment. But as it is located between the new stadium and a booming Chinatown in Flushing, public and private interests are again trying to transform “Willets Point” and build a shopping mall to the west of the stadium.

We’ll walk to the area from central Flushing to understand its important setting, confront political, economic and ecological issues and learn why “Willets Point” is a misnomer.

Conducted by Dr. Jack Eichenbaum, Queens Borough Historian. Sponsored jointly by the City Club (CC) and the Queens Historical Society (QHS). Potential attendees are asked to preregister with Jack Eichenbaum via email at jaconet@aol.com.

The tour is limited to 35 participants. A waiting list will be kept should pre-registration exceed that number.
