Fitness Hikes feature less talking and more walking, for those who don’t mind a vigorous two hour hike.

Hiking programs feature intensity levels ranging from light (a leisurely stroll on mostly paved paths), moderate (longer, faster paced hikes on rugged terrain), to vigorous (long distance, with hills and rugged terrain). For all hiking programs we recommend wearing comfortable shoes or boots, and packing water and a light snack.

We connect children with nature to encourage active exploration of the natural world. Children who spend time outdoors develop strong imaginations and learn to socialize better with others. Urban Park Rangers are role models who encourage children to let their imaginations run wild in a safe, supportive atmosphere.

While most of our programs are family friendly, the programs highlighted here are specifically for young children and families. Whether enjoying a family friendly movie under the stars, freeing your imagination playing in nature, or learning about conservation through eco-crafts, a free Ranger program is the perfect addition to your family’s weekend. (faux)H is a series of six hands-on workshops held at the Wyckoff farmhouse Museum, exploring traditional farm based skills: hand sewing, natural dying and preservation. Employing dye plants and crops grown on the Wyckoff farm, situated in the middle Brooklyn, (faux)H will be a collaborative experiment in the lost art of learning-by-doing. Join artist, Lisa Sikorski on a journey of learning about the slow process of making by hand and from the earth. Workshops are suitable for participants ages 13 and up.

Natural Dying: Did you know your garden is already growing a wealth of materials that you can use to beautify other things? Come learn how to take the otherwise inedible plants in your garden and dye various fibers. We will use plant materials grown specifically for dying as well as less commonly used dye plants. This workshop will be an exploration of the potential and uses of natural materials.

How to sign up: Participants may sign up for one or all workshops. For more information about the program or to register please email.

(faux)H Workshop Series:

  • Hand Sewing & Embroidery: May 11 and June 8, 10am-12:30pm
  • Natural Dying: July 13 and August 10, 12-3pm
  • Preserving the Harvest: September 14 and October 5, 12-3pm

The HSBC Children’s Garden at Queens Botanical Garden offers children in our diverse metropolitan area a rare opportunity to learn about science and nature through practical, hands-on experiences in an outdoor environment.

When summer arrives, the fun and learning heat up, as children make salads from their spring vegetable plantings, bake cookies in a solar oven, learn about climate and environment, raise and release butterflies, plant delicious summer vegetables, conduct scavenger hunts, build planters and terrariums and lots more. Ages 5 through 12.

There are two sessions:

  • Summer I: July 8-August 21, Mondays & Wednesdays
  • Summer II: July 9-August 22, Tuesdays & Thursdays

Or you can create your own schedule. Contact us about other flexible options. You may call or email education@queensbotanical.org

End time: 4:00 pm
