Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form that has evolved over centuries into an exciting combination of martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. Some of capoeira’s benefits include strength, flexibility, stamina, overall fitness and confidence. Benefits of capoeira for kids include promoting social interaction and sense of belonging, building confidence, discipline and self esteem, promoting a healthy lifestyle so children become active, and healthy, and develop cultural awareness and tolerance. Wear comfortable clothing.

Capoeira was developed in Brazil, but its history extends to Africa and tribes from Angola. Slaves living on Brazilian Plantations who weren’t allowed to openly practice traditional forms of self-defense developed an ingenious method of disguising their training by combining it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments.

Summer on the Hudson's Children’s Performance Series runs on Thursdays from July 2 to July 30.

This event includes music, storytelling, and theater for young audiences up to age 7. Wear sunscreen! Stroller parking in designated area is mandatory.

Moona Luna is the kindie group that the New York Daily News says is providing “the missing soundtrack for bilingual/bicultural kids.” After making a splash on the family music scene with their accordion-driven, Latin-inspired debut album, Piñata Party (2011), Moona Luna delivered something fresh in its sophomore album, Vamos, Let's Go! (2013). Songwriter and bandleader, Sandra Velasquez, found inspiration in American pop hits of the 50’s and 60’s, and staying true to her bilingual mission, crafted Spanish and English lyrics for each song. Having bilingual lyrics is just the icing on the cake because the tunes are so finger-snapping good and cater to extremely wide audiences.

It's not too late to register for camp this season! Greenbelt Summer Day Camp for children age 5 - 13 years runs from 7/6 to 8/13.

The Greenbelt Environmental Education Department is dedicated to forstering an appreciation of the outdoors in children of all ages.

The camp's headquarters is located at High Rock Park, a 72-acre forest preserve. Campers will explore our hiking trails, natural areas, creeks, ponds, the nature center, and carousel. Campers will also take off-site trips to other parks each session. New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene licenses our camp; this means we follow their low child-to-counselor ratio, making camp safe and fun for all.

For more information, please visit the High Rock Summer Day Camp website.
