Each week, Wave Hill educators share some of their favorite nature tales. These stories—classics and more—come to life through interactive readings, sing-alongs, and puppetry.

Sly foxes and (not so) sneaky schemes are featured in this week’s stories of plans gone humorously awry. Be sure to catch this program while you can! Stories this week: Do Like a Duck Does! By Judy Hindley, Wings: A Tale of Two Chickens by James Marshall and Shh! We Have a Plan by Chris Haughton.

Programs are held outdoors in good weather, and in Wave Hill House during inclement weather. Ideal for children ages three to six with an adult.

Free with admission to the grounds.

Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form that has evolved over centuries into an exciting combination of martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. Some of capoeira’s benefits include strength, flexibility, stamina, overall fitness and confidence. Benefits of capoeira for kids include promoting social interaction and sense of belonging, building confidence, discipline and self esteem, promoting a healthy lifestyle so children become active, and healthy, and develop cultural awareness and tolerance. Wear comfortable clothing.

Capoeira was developed in Brazil, but its history extends to Africa and tribes from Angola. Slaves living on Brazilian Plantations who weren’t allowed to openly practice traditional forms of self-defense developed an ingenious method of disguising their training by combining it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments.

Pack a picnic, bring a friend and settle in for a night of premier movies on the pier. In this kids' movie, a 12-year-old boy searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world.

The film will begin when it is dark enough to see the image on the screen which is dependent on the sunset, generally around 8:30pm. Seating will open at 6:30, and is first come first serve and people can reserve chairs for their friends once onsite. We put out chairs (about 250 of them) and they normally fill by 7:30 and ground seating is available in front and behind the chair section. Front ground seating is for blankets/butts on ground (the pier is hard made of pavers) & picnics are welcome if trash is disposed of properly. Dogs are welcome on leash and off chairs. People may bring their own chairs and place them behind our chairs on the dark pavers, if they choose to bring them. There is no seating or standing in the Southern aisle of the pier.

Momentum, a new piece, focuses on risk-taking perpetual movement driven by rhythms and flowing through melodies. It is performed in a powerful cohesion of Hybrid Movement, circus arts, classical and contemporary ballet, rhythmic gymnastics, bobbing, waving, and popping. Are You the Dreamer? is a transubstantiated tale exploring beauty, ugliness, rejection, love, dreams, and fear through dancing and dynamic movement.

The Hybrid Movement Company has been hailed by the New York Times as one of the most innovative Contemporary Circus Companies in the USA today!

Summer Streets is an annual celebration of New York City’s streets, presented by the New York City Department of Transportation. On three consecutive Saturdays in August, nearly seven miles of NYC's streets are opened for people to play, run, walk and bike. Summer Streets provides space for healthy recreation and encourages New Yorkers to use more sustainable forms of transportation.

Held between 7:00 am to 1:00 pm, Summer Streets extends from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, along Park Avenue and connecting streets, with easy access from all points in New York City, allowing participants to plan a trip as long or short as they wish. All activities at Summer Streets are free of charge, and designed for people of all ages and ability levels to share the streets respectfully.

Events will be held at and near parks throughout the city. At Foley Square, you can Slide The City on a 270-foot water slide. Please visit the Slide The City page to pre-register. For a complete list of activities, please visit DOT's Summer Streets page.

Each summer on Saturday morning for the past 59 years, New Yorkers of all ages have listended to Andersen tales and other stories, folktales, and fairytales from around the world told by a group of brilliant storytellers at the Hans Christian Andersen Statue in Central Park. This landmark New York event continues this summer, with storytelling happening every Saturday from June through September.

On August 15, Megan Hicks will share "The Goblin and the Grocer" by H.C. Andersen and Regina Ress will share the Haitian story "Tippingee".

Storytelling is held rain or shine. The stories are appropriate for children six years old and up. Parents or guardians are asked to sit with their children.

This free program is funded by the Hans Christian Andersen Story Telling Center, Inc.
