Treat your child to a day camp like they've only imagined at Van Cortlandt House Museum.

Immersed in the everyday life of a child in 18th century and dressed in period style clothing, campers learn about the Van Cortlandt Family and the history that happened here all while having fun.

Children will also travel in time back to the early years of the Revolutionary War and experience the life of a soldier in General George Washington’s army. They will lend a hand with pitching tents and setting up camp. “Enlistment” in the army, military drill, and reconnaissance, are also part of the action.

Camp is lead by Van Cortlandt House Museum’s professional staff, talented living history volunteers, and college students studying material culture and art education. Daily activities for Adventures in Time Summer History Camp are designed in keeping with New York State 4th grade curriculum standards and are appropriate for children ages 6 - 12.

Adventures in Time Summer History Camp is open to all children with a sense of adventure who have completed 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th grade (or the equivalent) in the Spring of 2014. We encourage early enrollment, as camp space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Ten year old Kojo Odu Roney loved the drums even as a baby. His father is jazz saxophonist Antoine Roney; his mother Nia Love, an established choreographer and dancer; and his uncle trumpeter Wallace Roney; Kojo sat down to his first drum set at the age of two and has never looked back. At such a young age Kojo understood how to play the drum set in jazz setting. By 4 years old, he was able to play with jazz ensembles confidently. Practicing daily helped Kojo match his understanding of rhythm and applying it to the drum set. By the age of 8 years old, he went on his first tour in Europe, which is the start of his professional music encounters. His travels included France, Italy, Switzerland and Greece. He also visited other countries including Serbia, Germany, Austria and Poland. Kojo shares the stage and performs with many professional musicians including Buster Williams, Darrell Green, Billy Spaceman Paterson, Rashaan Carter, Brandee Younger, Saadi Zain, Emanuel Ruffler and of course his father, mother and uncle. Some great highlights of Kojo's many experiences is having the chance to sit in with The Incredible Lenny White, The Great Al Foster and legendary Jazz drummer, Roy Haynes, while great jazz drummers Louis Hayes and Grady Tate were in the audience and also having the chance to becoming friends with The Great Jimmy Cobb. Kojo currently performs with his dad and uncle.

Van Cortlandt House Museum is owned by the City of New York Parks & Recreation, operated by The National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New York, and a member of The Historic House Trust of New York City.

During his high energy presentation, professional cyclist Chris Clark shares his story of growing up with a passion for cycling and how he used that passion to make friends, stay healthy, and even as an excuse to avoid the peer pressures all children face.

City Parks Foundation is excited to announce the return of its popular PuppetMobile production, Little Red’s Hood. Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre. Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is to focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass. Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre's Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.

Van Cortlandt House Museum is owned by the City of New York Parks & Recreation, operated by The National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New York, and a member of The Historic House Trust of New York City.

Mama Akanke’ began her storytelling career while still a student at Howard University over 35 years ago. Challenged by her theatre professor to research and implement alternate forms of entertainment, she explored the world of storytelling and folklore through the lenses of Zora Neale Hurston and Katherine Dunham and became so inspired, developed and performed a one woman interactive participatory storytelling show for the D.C. Public Schools. Mama Akanke’ became a founding member of the Nubian Folklore Company; Sister Griots and Urban Griots. She has performed for audiences around the world for over 30 years as both a storyteller and actress to great acclaim. Well known for her imaginative interpretations of characters, her energy, her focus on literacy, magnetism and rapport with her audiences, Mama Akanke believes that every individual has the capacity to reach into their imaginations to understand other cultures and people in the world by actively engaging in their history and traditions. It is her hope that through her stories, songs and dances, the rich culture and beauty of people from the African Diaspora will be celebrated and passed on for generations to come. Mama Akanke’ has been featured as both a performer and director at venues throughout the world including: the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts; Howard University; Morgan State University; Syracuse University; Cornell University; The Apollo Theatre; The National Black Storytellers Festival; The National Black Theatre Festival; The University of Connecticut; The St. Gallen Theatre in Switzerland; The European Premier of the musicals “Raisin and The Sound of Soul” and a myriad of other venues. Mama Akanke’ incorporates her skills as a drama therapist, arts educator and interfaith minister to transform her audiences as she weaves funky folklore and more.
