Karen Washington, Just Food Trainer

Since the weather is nice and the garden is looking lush with greenery, you must be getting a lot of visitors inquiring about becoming a member or getting a box to grow. By having a membership procedures and agreements in place, it will be very easy to welcome new folks. If you are having trouble getting folks to visit or stop by, what better way to draw them in than an exciting event or two. In this workshop, we will discuss the necessity of drafting membership procedures and agreements. We will go over successful event planning tips. We encourage groups to share their challenges and successes so we can learn from each other.

Many of us use herbs at home, but what are the key remedies to have on hand that have been proven to be most effective for the more common ailments and minor injuries? During this workshop we will spend time discussing (and sampling) the herbal remedies that should comprise every family’s natural medicine cabinet. We’ll cover herbs for colds and flu, headaches, aches and pains, minor injuries and burns, and more, and will discuss in detail how to determine the best herbs to use and what form to use them in, including teas, tinctures, ointments, creams, and salves.

Richard Mandelbaum RH (AHG) is a clinical herbalist with a private practice in Brooklyn and in Sullivan County, NY. Richard has been passionate about plants for over twenty five years, with experience wild foraging and growing herbs in an organic, permaculture market garden, and has been practicing as an herbalist since 1997 with a background in both Chinese and Western traditions. In addition to seeing clients and teaching on a diverse range of subjects, he often leads workshops in field botany, wild edible plants and mushrooms. He has been a professional member of the American Herbalists Guild (AHG) since 2003, and joined the AHG Council (board of directors) in October 2012.

(faux)H is a series of six hands-on workshops held at the Wyckoff farmhouse Museum, exploring traditional farm based skills: hand sewing, natural dying and preservation. Employing dye plants and crops grown on the Wyckoff farm, situated in the middle Brooklyn, (faux)H will be a collaborative experiment in the lost art of learning-by-doing. Join artist, Lisa Sikorski on a journey of learning about the slow process of making by hand and from the earth. Workshops are suitable for participants ages 13 and up.

Natural Dying: Did you know your garden is already growing a wealth of materials that you can use to beautify other things? Come learn how to take the otherwise inedible plants in your garden and dye various fibers. We will use plant materials grown specifically for dying as well as less commonly used dye plants. This workshop will be an exploration of the potential and uses of natural materials.

How to sign up: Participants may sign up for one or all workshops. For more information about the program or to register please email.

(faux)H Workshop Series:

  • Hand Sewing & Embroidery: May 11 and June 8, 10am-12:30pm
