Wind down after a long day with a 50-minute Om Factory yoga class every Thursday starting at 7 p.m. on the North Plaza of Union Square Park. Vinyasa, which translates from Sanskrit to “flow” or “move in a special way,” merges movement with the breath. Flowing through sequences of synchronized breathing warms the body, allowing the practitioner to move deeper into postures and, over time, deeper into their personal practice. The class serves students at any level of experience from the yoga novice to the regular practitioner.

Ride with the NYC DOT to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge!

We will ride on a combination of bike lanes, city streets, and off-street paths (including the Jamaica Bay Greenway) to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. At the Refuge, the American Littoral Society will provide a -FREE- guided tour, lasting about an hour. After the ride, bike home on your own, or follow a ride marshal to the Broad Channel A train. Children welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult.

What to bring: Bike, lock, MetroCard (if taking the train back), sun block, snacks, and water.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels. Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form that has evolved over centuries into an exciting combination of martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. Some of capoeira’s benefits include strength, flexibility, stamina, overall fitness and confidence. Benefits of capoeira for kids include promoting social interaction and sense of belonging, building confidence, discipline and self esteem, promoting a healthy lifestyle so children become active, and healthy, and develop cultural awareness and tolerance. Wear comfortable clothing.

Capoeira was developed in Brazil, but its history extends to Africa and tribes from Angola. Slaves living on Brazilian Plantations who weren’t allowed to openly practice traditional forms of self-defense developed an ingenious method of disguising their training by combining it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments.

Free outdoor yoga classes are a great way for the entire family to stay fit! Every Saturday in June through September, join us at one of four New York Restoration Project garden locations for an hour-long session.

Start your weekend with a fulfilling and exciting workout, led by certified yoga instructors. Mats will be provided for temporary use.

Quiet like a mountain, moving like a river, Tai Chi is a sequence of gentle movements based on images found in nature. In this beginner-level class, Irving Yee, a member of the William CC Chen Tai Chi School, introduces students to the internal martial arts and promotes an awareness of its benefits. A series of family-friendly movement workshops rooted in basic concepts presented by two Brooklyn-based dance companies—Urban Bush Women and Cora Dance. Takes place at two NYRP gardens in Bed-Stuy.

Everyone can hip hop! Discover the rhythm inside you! Taught by Cora Dance, this youth series will focus on hip hop movement. Recommended for ages 9 and up.

Gearing up to run the TCS New York City Marathon or another fall marathon? Get in some long-distance practice with these runs; featuring built-in fuel, pace-setters, and training partners. Participants will be divided into groups by half-minute intervals from 7:00 through 11:00+ minutes per mile. All groups will cover 20 miles, but individuals may shorten their distance to suit their training needs. Runners faster than 7:00 per mile may begin before the 7:00 group; however, no pace leader will be provided. Water, PowerGel, and Gatorade Endurance Formula will be available on the 102nd Street Transverse throughout the run.
