Outdoor Cinema Film Festival Presents: Live-In Maid

Pre-screening performances at 7 PM, film begins at sundown

Norma Aleandro, the grande dame of Argentine cinema (think Meryl Streep crossed with Penelope Cruz) plays a still-elegant haute-bourgeois divorcée, living in a fashionable Buenos Aires apartment, surrounded by a lifetime of consumer goods, but with little cash. Her maid of 30 years massages her feet and freshens her drinks — but makes moves to abandon this sinking ship when the going gets tough. This is a wonderful comedy of class consciousness and codependency that easily and subtly crosses cultural boundaries.

2005, 83 minutes. Directed by Jorge Gaggero.

Robert Stromberg's Maleficent stars Angelina Jolie as the title character, who, as a teenager, is a powerful and respected winged fairy helping to rule a magical land full of strange creatures. Her homeland borders a country that is populated by humans and run by the cruel King Henry (Kenneth Cranham). One day, Henry's son Stefan (Jackson Bews) traipses into the fairy's land and meets Maleficent, causing the two crazy teens to fall into forbidden love. Years later, Henry seeks to take over the magical land next to his kingdom, but is thwarted in battle by Maleficent. He demands revenge, and eventually his now-grown son Stefan (played as an adult by Sharlto Copley) succeeds by betraying the fairy and clipping her wings. In response, an infuriated Maleficent swears revenge on Stefan; she gets her chance when the prince becomes king and has his first child, a daughter named Aurora (Elle Fanning) -- as Sleeping Beauty fans will remember, Maleficent curses her to fall into a death-like sleep after pricking her finger on a spinning wheel on her 16th birthday. Stefan demands that all of the spinning wheels be collected, and orders his daughter to be secretly raised in the woods by three good-hearted but dim-witted fairies, who will return her to him the day after her 16th birthday. However, Maleficent refuses to stay away from Aurora and ends up developing maternal feelings for the girl, eventually inspiring her to try to undo the curse she placed upon the princess. - Paraphrase description from Swank website.

One of the stars of Walt Disney's Mary Poppins, Dick Van Dyke, is re-united with that film's composer and lyricist, Richard M.Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, in this big budget and bloodless children's fantasy musical, based on the children's book by James Bond author Ian Fleming. Van Dyke plays Caractacus Potts, a failed inventor who lives in a big house with his two children, Jemima Heather Ripley and Jeremy Adrian Hall, and eccentric father Lionel Jeffries. Potts has to raise 30 shillings so his children can buy a broken-down racing car from the junkyard. After a disastrous attempt to sell his invention of whistling sweets to Lord Scrumptious (James Robertson-Justice), the local candy maker, he finally gets enough money for the car by doing a Dick Van Dyke dance routine at the county fair. Potts takes the car and miraculously transforms the vehicle into a shiny new car named Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. While on a picnic with the children and Truly Scrumptious (Sally Ann Howes), Lord Scrumptious' beautiful daughter, Potts concocts a fantasy tale about the magical powers of the car, which can now float on water and fly. In the tale, Baron Bomburst (Gert Frobe) wants the car for himself and kidnaps the automobile and the inventor. But Bomburst captures Grandpa by mistake along with the wrong car, so Potts, Truly, and the children have to enlist Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on a rescue mission to Bomburst's lair to save Grandpa. Perhaps the greatest movie ever shot in two days, Little Shop of Horrors was originally conceived as a followup to Roger Corman's black comedy A Bucket of Blood (1959). Jonathan Haze plays Seymour Krelboin, a schlemiel's schlemiel who works at the Skid Row flower shop of Mr. Mushnick (Mel Welles). Experimenting in his spare time, Seymour develops a new plant species that he hopes will lead him to fame and fortune. Unfortunately, the mutated plant -- named Audrey Junior, in honor of Seymour's girlfriend Audrey (Jackie Joseph)—subsists on blood and human flesh. It also talks, or rather, commands: "Feed Me! FEEEEED ME!" Before long, the luckless Seymour has fed his plant the bodies of a railroad detective, a sadistic dentist, and a flashy trollop. Meanwhile, Mr. Mushnik, who has stumbled onto Seymour's secret, has inadvertently offered up a burglar (played by Charles Griffith, who also wrote the script and supplied the plant's voice) as a midnight snack for the voracious, ever-growing Audrey Junior. (When the plant blooms, the faces of its various victims are reproduced in its flowers.) Paraphrase from Swank website.

In this documentary shot in Chittagong, Bangladesh, the world center for ship-breaking, huge megaton behemoths are run aground and broken apart by men and boys who earn $2 a day. Remarkably beautiful cinematography affords indelible insights into how some of the most exploited people on earth retain their courage, decency and fortitude. A.O. Scott in The New York Times writes: “an unsettling hybrid of art and witness… the vivid record of a complex reality. The way it turns blunt, material facts into sublime images is both astonishing and troubling.”

In this lavish adaptation of the classic novel, a Midwestern war veteran finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his millionaire neighbor.

Pack a picnic, bring a friend and settle in for a night of premier movies on the Pier.

The film will begin when it is dark enough to see the image on the screen which is dependent on the sunset, generally around 8:30pm. Seating will open at 6:30, and is first come first serve and people can reserve chairs for their friends once onsite. We put out chairs (about 250 of them) and they normally fill by 7:30 and ground seating is available in front and behind the chair section. Front ground seating is for blankets/butts on ground (the pier is hard made of pavers) & picnics are welcome if trash is disposed of properly. Dogs are welcome on leash and off chairs. People may bring their own chairs and place them behind our chairs on the dark pavers, if they choose to bring them. There is no seating or standing in the Southern aisle of the pier. @summeronhudson for weather updates

Hollywood, 1927: the silent-film romantic team of Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) is the toast of Tinseltown. While Lockwood and Lamont personify smoldering passions onscreen, in real life the down-to-earth Lockwood can't stand the egotistical, brainless Lina. He prefers the company of aspiring actress Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds), whom he met while escaping his screaming fans. Watching these intrigues from the sidelines is Cosmo Brown (Donald O'Connor), Don's best pal and on-set pianist. Cosmo is promoted to musical director of Monumental Pictures by studio head R.F. Simpson (Millard Mitchell) when the talking-picture revolution commences. That's all right for Cosmo, but how will talkies affect the upcoming Lockwood-Lamont vehicle "The Dueling Cavalier"? Don, an accomplished song-and-dance man, should have no trouble adapting to the microphone. Lina, however, is another matter; put as charitably as possible, she has a voice that sounds like fingernails on a blackboard. The disastrous preview of the team's first talkie has the audience howling with derisive laughter. On the strength of the plot alone, concocted by the matchless writing team of Betty Comden and Adolph Green, Singin' in the Rain is a delight. Paraphrase from Swank website.

“The name of my stallion is King of the Wind. My mare is called Electric Queen and she electrocutes all who get in her way…” This incredible introduction to the head-spinning Sonepur Fair, a festival held at the confluence of the Ganges and Gandak rivers on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Kartika, comes from the Horse Breeder, who, along with the Showman, the Rider, the Exorcist, the Dancer and the Mahut (elephant tamer) comprise the cast. This starry-eyed impression of the festival is sensory overload, complete with all the frenetic pacing and explosions of neon that only a visit to this fair could offer. 2015, 56 minutes. Directed by Gaspard Kuentz and Cédric Dupire.

There will be a pre-screening performances at 7 p.m.; films begins at sundown.

Pack a picnic, bring a friend and settle in for a night of premier movies on the pier. In this film, six-year-old Hushpuppy must learn the ways of courage and love when faced with both her hot-tempered father's fading health and melting ice-caps that flood her ramshackle bayou community and unleash ancient aurochs.

Newly arrived in California from New Jersey, teenager Daniel (Ralph Macchio) almost immediately runs afoul of karate-trained high school bullies. He is rescued by Japanese janitor Miyagi (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita), who agrees to teach Daniel how to harness karate for good instead of brutality. The film culminates in a championship karate bout, pitting Daniel against his sworn enemy Johnny (William Zabka) -- the cruel and thuggish boyfriend of Ali (Elisabeth Shue), with whom Daniel has fallen in love (and vice versa). Dissensions can take many forms: a soon-to-be-divorced couple bickering; a brood of misfit animals squabbling; an all-female band debating the very definition of their feminism. With unfailing shrewdness, the following shorts depict various clashes and the intense relationships that trigger them. Sharing a penchant for naturalism and distaste for gender binaries, these clever films are further proof of Swedish cinema’s incredible vitality.

Short Films

  • "I Turn to You", 2015, 15 minutes, directed by Victor Lindgren.
  • "Bath House", 2014, 15 minutes, directed by Niki Lindroth von Bahr.
  • "Pussy Have the Power", 2014, 14 minutes, directed by Lovisa Sirén.

Additional shorts to be added. Please note: Due to graphic language, this evening is not recommended for children.

Programmed by Rooftop Films. There will be pre-screening performances at 7 p.m.; films begins at sundown.

Roman Polanski directs with great style and he also plays the nasty villain who gives Jack's private eye a nose job. Number 2 on AFI's list of the 10 Best Mystery Films.
