Erik Benson’s paintings depict the landscape of everyday metropolitan life, created with thousands of shapes hand-cut from dried sheets of acrylic paint. Benson uses this painstaking compositional technique to capture the complexity of urban development, with its interplay of construction and creative destruction, density and emptiness. Familiar cityscapes emerge as more complex than they initially appear.

Originally I was interested in creating a painting vocabulary that depicted the plasticity and temporality of unexamined things such as playgrounds and construction sites,” says Benson. “These interests have been growing into ideas and concerns that deal with the urban landscape, such as how cities grow and shrink, and what these issues mean to the inhabitants.”

In these vivid new paintings, Benson considers the role and impact of playgrounds, trees and parks within evolving communities, often setting the saturated colors and bold shapes of play equipment and dynamic tree branch patterns against the muted backdrops of the surrounding buildings. Inspired by his neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn, he creates works that are not precise representations, but rather archetypes, at once foreboding and optimistic.

Come to Fort Tryon Park and try something new. Join us on Saturdays, Tuesday and Thursday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Rain and weather / air advisory cancels. Fitness programs are cancelled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. After years of being a gym rat, I've seen the light, so to speak. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

All it really takes is your hands, a needle, thread and fabric and we can make magic. We will learn how to design and assemble simple embroideries and designs. Come prepared to use your hands, work patiently and make yourself proud.

(faux)H is a series of six hands-on workshops held at the Wyckoff farmhouse Museum, exploring traditional farm based skills: hand sewing, natural dying and preservation. Employing dye plants and crops grown on the Wyckoff farm, situated in the middle Brooklyn, (faux)H will be a collaborative experiment in the lost art of learning-by-doing. Join artist, Lisa Sikorski on a journey of learning about the slow process of making by hand and from the earth. Workshops are suitable for participants ages 13 and up.

Natural Dying: Did you know your garden is already growing a wealth of materials that you can use to beautify other things? Come learn how to take the otherwise inedible plants in your garden and dye various fibers. We will use plant materials grown specifically for dying as well as less commonly used dye plants. This workshop will be an exploration of the potential and uses of natural materials.

How to sign up: Participants may sign up for one or all workshops. For more information about the program or to register please email.

(faux)H Workshop Series:

  • Hand Sewing & Embroidery: May 11 and June 8, 10am-12:30pm
