Amadou & Mariam's 2012 album, Folila, which featured guest spots by Santigold and TV On The Radio among others, was hailed by NME as “a great chuffing masterstroke of genre-less genre mixing,” but it also sparkled with of the Afro-blues sound that has made this blind husband and wife duo one of West Africa’s finest exports. The powerhouse young Taureg guitarist Bombino's playing unfurls with “fast, stuttery, rhythmic hammering, coiling lines inside lines;” (NY Times) he’s been called the Hendrix of the Sahara. Rolling Stone also recently called Bombino's Nomad "The most exciting blues album of the year."

The legendary South African choral group, still led by its indomitable founder Joseph Shabalala, first won international fame through its work on Paul Simon’s 1986 album, Graceland, but the group has been active for more than half a century. Today they are the living embodiment of Zulu song, and a mobile academy of South African culture. “It isn’t merely the grace and power of their dancing or the beauty of their singing that rivets the attention, but the sheer joy and love that emanates from their being.” (Paul Simon) With the soulful singer and guitarist Aurelio Martinez, the standard bearer of Garifuna music and the first black member of Honduras’ National Congress.

Brazilian Tropicália trailblazers Os Mutantes, whose psychedelic collision of The Beatles, John Cage, and Bossa Nova is “pop at its very best and most innovative,” (SPIN) headline a proper airing of the storied label Luaka Bop, founded by David Byrne and devoted to dance music of any denomination from across the globe. Javelin brings a sound collage “like an otherworldly radio station based in some crate-digger bunker where genre distinctions are a distant memory” (Pitchfork) to the party, and the Sierra Leonean Janka Nabay, the undisputed king of Bubu music, starts things off on a festive, frenetic note.

It’s been a long 10 years since everyone's favorite Scottish indie band has graced the Bandshell stage, but thankfully Belle and Sebastian will be back in the park for our 35th Anniversary season.

Hailing from Glasgow, Belle and Sebastian have enjoyed much critical success since their first album Tigermilk in 1996. Since then they’ve sold over three million albums and have captured the hearts of anyone with even the slightest penchant for indie pop.

Despite their large band, Belle and Sebastian’s music comes across as effortlessly cool and deceptively simple. That said, they are consistently lauded for their musicality and no album review can avoid praising the band’s songcraft.

With the release of their new album featuring rarities and b-sides this June and a promise to hit the studio post-tour, this show, which will also feature Yo La Tengo, will be the perfect time and place to indulge your nostalgia for the '90s while looking forward to a great future for your ears.

The last time we screened the 1931 Bela Lugosi classic, DRACULA with Philip Glass' equally classic original score performed live, thunder rolled, lightening streaked the sky, and torrents of rain worthy of Transylvania chased everyone out of the park half way through. We’re having another go in honor of our 35th season, and adding an opening set by the diabolically talented violinist and singer Kishi Bashi, a cohort of Regina Spektor and Of Montreal “who's creating something haunting, beautiful and maybe a little off-kilter through the technology of looping.” (NPR)

The enigmatic songwriter Mike Scott, “madman or genius, depending on your point of view,” (Record Collector Magazine) has explored many sounds and styles through THE WATERBOYS, his principle vehicle since 1983, but Celtic folk rock of burning intensity remains at the center. The band’s latest project is An Appointment with Mr. Yeats, music set to the words of Ireland’s greatest lyric poet. Scott’s fellow Scot ALASDAIR ROBERTS, a sometime collaborator with Will Oldham, infuses his songs “with the enduring melodies and lyrical twists of ancient folk music.” (The Guardian UK)

A night of dangerous old-timey music. Combining fierce musicianship with an intense energy, Trampled by Turtles invest their “supercharged songs with a hooky playfulness and white-knuckle power” (Esquire) that’s dragging bluegrass kicking and screaming into the modern world. They’re abetted here by The Devil Makes Three, who traffic in “bluegrass, folk, rockabilly, and Piedmont blues and ragtime, all played with a blazing punk-rock attitude,” (SF Weekly) and the Thomas Paine-quoting Rhode Island duo Brown Bird, who favor a dark and dreamlike take on American roots.

The soul-singing, dance music eclecticist Jamie Lidell is “the progenitor of his own completely original genre that no one else has been able to recreate” (KCRW) and “a master-craftsman of genre hybrids packing potent lyrical punches of love." (Stereogum) Can’t argue with that! Co-headlining is the Baltimore absurdist composer and party instigator Dan Deacon, wielding a participatory Smartphone app that turns the crowd into a sound and light show of its own. "If Dan Deacon comes your way, go… It will change your life forever.” (NPR) With the psychedelic soul of The Stepkids.
