Many New Yorkers are unaware of the 350 species of wild birds—almost a third of all bird species in North America—that live in or pass through New York City each year. Artist Alan Messer skillfully captures many, from exquisite migrating blackburnian warblers in Central Park’s ramble to a Northern Harrier scanning the vast marshes of Jamaica Bay. Conserving Our City of Nature: The Artwork of Alan Messer presented by NYC Audubon reveals over 30 of Messer’s detailed paintings, illustrations, and field sketches of New York City's avian wildlife and habitats, offering a view of NYC Audubon's conservation mission through an artistic eye.

Join us for a DIY print and stamp workshop with the Art Students League’s Sonomi Kobayashi. Using overlooked, everyday objects such as wine corks, paper clips, buttons, rubber bands, foot care cushions (bunion and corn cushions), and bottle caps you will create print blocks and stamps to make multilayered prints and patterns that can be used to enhance journal covers, stationery, fabrics, accessories, and anything else you can think of.

Sonomi Kobayashi is a New York based artist, from Japan. She studied painting, sculpture and printmaking at the Art Students League of New York from which she received a studio certificate in painting. She now works out of her studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York and exhibits frequently in the United States, Japan, and Europe. She received the Will Barnet Grant in Printmaking in 2013, and has done residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, VT, Vytlacil Campas, Sparkill, NY, and Cat'Art Contemporary Art Centre, Sainte Colombe, France. Her work expresses the relationships between humanity, nature, earth and the universe. Viewers often find universality in her paintings which depict the shapes and symbols found in nature.

Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

In commemoration of President Lincoln’s assassination 150 years ago, the Bond Street Euterpean Singing Society presents music composed in 1865 offering solace to a newly reunited nation in shock and grief. The program title comes from a popular song by celebrated American composer George F. Root, most famous for his Civil War songs. A slide lecture about the history of Lincoln’s assassination, its aftermath, and the funeral train that transported the president from Washington, D.C. to his final resting place in Springfield, Illinois intertwines iconography and period photos to make this a unique and edifying multimedia presentation.

Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

Join this interactive ceramic and mosaic workshop inspired by the natural beauty of the Greenbelt. Under the direction of Janice Patrignani, visitors will be invited to create with clay, and the resulting low relief sculptures will then be fired, glazed and assembled along with mosaic glass into a dynamic community-made mural installation. As the project travels from place to place, new community made sculptures will be created & previously made pieces, once fired & glazed, will be added. Participants will also have the opportunity to add mosaic glass elements to the work in progress, as well as to pinch & coil the clay into shapes such as plants, flowers or insects. The mural in its entirety will be displayed at the SI Children’s Museum in November of 2015. This project is make possible in part by a DCA Art Fund Grant from Staten Island Arts with public funding from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. Registration encouraged.
