Enjoy vibrantly danceable live music accompanied by spectacular sunsets over the Hudson River!

Founded by Greek-born singer, film scorer, and composer Magda Giannikou, Banda Magda moves from samba to French chanson, from Greek folk tunes to Colombian cumbia and Afro-Peruvian lando. Their songs capture the best of mid-century pop ballads and cinematic arranging, drawing on the band’s global background and unchained musicality. Live, Banda Magda bursts with humor and quirky sensibility, powered by a unflagging energy. This group of close musical friends turn Giannikou’s songs into engaging romps that have won them a spot with Carnegie Hall Musical Explorers Series, as well as performances at discerning venues and festivals such as Webster Hall, Irving Plaza, The Kennedy Center, The Jefferson Center, Celebrate Brooklyn, Jazz al Parque, St. Moritz Festival Da Jazz, and the Chicago World Music Festival.

Outdoor Cinema Film Festival Presents: Live-In Maid

Pre-screening performances at 7 PM, film begins at sundown

Norma Aleandro, the grande dame of Argentine cinema (think Meryl Streep crossed with Penelope Cruz) plays a still-elegant haute-bourgeois divorcée, living in a fashionable Buenos Aires apartment, surrounded by a lifetime of consumer goods, but with little cash. Her maid of 30 years massages her feet and freshens her drinks — but makes moves to abandon this sinking ship when the going gets tough. This is a wonderful comedy of class consciousness and codependency that easily and subtly crosses cultural boundaries.

2005, 83 minutes. Directed by Jorge Gaggero.

About the Festival

Film Forum and Socrates Sculpture Park are pleased to announce the 2015 programming for the park’s Outdoor Cinema film festival: eight weeks of international movies shown under the stars, Wednesday evenings, July 1 – August 19. The series is presented by Socrates and Film Forum, in collaboration with Rooftop Films. Now celebrating its 17th year, the festival features open-air cinema, music, dance, and food, held in the 5-acre waterfront park in Long Island City, Queens. Admission is free.

Pack a picnic, bring a friend and settle in for a night of premier movies on the pier.

The film will begin when it is dark enough to see the image on the screen which is dependent on the sunset, generally around 8:30 p.m. Seating will open at 6:30, and is available on a first-come first-served basis. You can reserve chairs for their friends once onsite. We put out chairs (about 250 of them) and they normally fill by 7:30 and ground seating is available in front and behind the chair section. Front ground seating is for blankets/butts on ground (the pier is hard made of pavers) and picnics are welcome if trash is disposed of properly. Dogs are welcome on leash and off chairs. People may bring their own chairs and place them behind our chairs on the dark pavers. There is no seating or standing in the Southern aisle of the pier.

Summer on the Hudson programming is free to the public. Seating is limited, unreserved, and available on a first-come, first-served basis beginning 1-2 hours before the event. If there is heavy rain at the time of the event, the event will be cancelled. Up to the minute cancelation information will be posted on our twitter the Summer On the Hudson's Twitter account, @summeronhudson , and if the event is canceled this event listing will be updated to reflect that (about 2 hours before the event/1 hour before wellness classes). The life and loves of French pop star Serge Gainsbourg are reimagined by comic book artist Joann Sfar, beginning with his childhood in Nazi-occupied Paris, through his wild and crazy years in the ‘50s and ‘60s as a singer-songwriter and lover of some of the world’s most glamourous women (Bardot, Jane Birkin, beatnik icon Juliette Gréco). Dunes, Drawing and Dendrology is a new summer program, a thematic series of nature walks, talks, and art workshops, designed to encompass the various natural elements of Conference House Park.

The most distinctive natural feature of Conference House Park is the mile-and-a-half beachfront along the Raritan Bay and Arthur Kill waterways. These ever present bodies of water have shaped and influenced the Park environment for years. While the park's natural topography and features are constantly changing, none have experienced more change than the beachfront. Through the constant influence of the Raritan Bay, the shoreline has ebbed, flowed, and eroded while in some places expanded.

This family-friendly, educational walk and talk is designed to increase the appreciation and understanding of Conference House Park's waterfront environment: the signature bluffs, dunes, meadows, and wetlands. The walk will highlight some of the resiliency initiatives being undertaken to better protect and safeguard the shoreline from future severe weather events.

In this documentary shot in Chittagong, Bangladesh, the world center for ship-breaking, huge megaton behemoths are run aground and broken apart by men and boys who earn $2 a day. Remarkably beautiful cinematography affords indelible insights into how some of the most exploited people on earth retain their courage, decency and fortitude. A.O. Scott in The New York Times writes: “an unsettling hybrid of art and witness… the vivid record of a complex reality. The way it turns blunt, material facts into sublime images is both astonishing and troubling.”

2009, 93 minutes. Directed by Bong-Nam Park. Pre-screening performances begin at 7 p.m.; films begins at sundown.

In this lavish adaptation of the classic novel, a Midwestern war veteran finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his millionaire neighbor.

Pack a picnic, bring a friend and settle in for a night of premier movies on the Pier.

The film will begin when it is dark enough to see the image on the screen which is dependent on the sunset, generally around 8:30pm. Seating will open at 6:30, and is first come first serve and people can reserve chairs for their friends once onsite. We put out chairs (about 250 of them) and they normally fill by 7:30 and ground seating is available in front and behind the chair section. Front ground seating is for blankets/butts on ground (the pier is hard made of pavers) & picnics are welcome if trash is disposed of properly. Dogs are welcome on leash and off chairs. People may bring their own chairs and place them behind our chairs on the dark pavers, if they choose to bring them. There is no seating or standing in the Southern aisle of the pier. @summeronhudson for weather updates

Enjoy vibrantly danceable live music accompanied by spectacular sunsets over the Hudson River!

River Whyless puts a hauntingly sweet spin on traditional foundations with a sound full of lush harmonies, wide sweeping arrangements driven by dark percussion, and metaphors built of firewood and sap.

Their recent EP, the bands first release since their 2012 debut album, marks a notable evolution in their collective voice. Anderson's voice finds a mark between Sandy Denny's ethereal plea and Crystal Gayle's country swoon. English trad-folk sounds are some of the band's obvious touchstones, putting them in a category similar to contemporaries like Fleet Foxes and Stornoway.

“The name of my stallion is King of the Wind. My mare is called Electric Queen and she electrocutes all who get in her way…” This incredible introduction to the head-spinning Sonepur Fair, a festival held at the confluence of the Ganges and Gandak rivers on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Kartika, comes from the Horse Breeder, who, along with the Showman, the Rider, the Exorcist, the Dancer and the Mahut (elephant tamer) comprise the cast. This starry-eyed impression of the festival is sensory overload, complete with all the frenetic pacing and explosions of neon that only a visit to this fair could offer. 2015, 56 minutes. Directed by Gaspard Kuentz and Cédric Dupire.

There will be a pre-screening performances at 7 p.m.; films begins at sundown.

Programmed by Rooftop Films.

Pack a picnic, bring a friend and settle in for a night of premier movies on the pier. In this film, six-year-old Hushpuppy must learn the ways of courage and love when faced with both her hot-tempered father's fading health and melting ice-caps that flood her ramshackle bayou community and unleash ancient aurochs.

Tonight's performance is by two solo artists from opposite sides of the world met at a Love Festival. Michael Trotter, Jr. had just returned home after serving in the Iraq war and Tanya Blount was performing on various stages around the world. They fell in love and combined their talents to form The War and Treaty. The duo have been performing on stage and writing beautiful music together ever since. The soulful pop-folk songs from their much anticipated debut album, The War and Treaty: Live at Blue House Studios, is intimate, innovative and exciting.
