Many New Yorkers are unaware of the 350 species of wild birds—almost a third of all bird species in North America—that live in or pass through New York City each year. Artist Alan Messer skillfully captures many, from exquisite migrating Blackburnian Warblers in Central Park’s ramble to a Northern Harrier scanning the vast marshes of Jamaica Bay. Conserving Our City of Nature: The Artwork of Alan Messer presented by NYC Audubon reveals over 30 of Messer’s detailed paintings, illustrations, and field sketches of New York City's avian wildlife and habitats, offering a view of NYC Audubon's conservation mission through an artistic eye.

Alan Messer has taught birding ID and nature drawing classes at The New York Historical Society, and The New York City Audubon Society. His works have been shown at the Cape May Bird Observatory, the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, at Ellis Island, and The Lincoln Center in New York NY. He has illustrated for books, magazines, and field guides, and is a regular contributor to Bird Watcher's Digest. Messer is a former President of The Linnaean Society of New York.

Admission is free but space is limited.

Although our observable Universe is almost 14 billion years old, the basis for much of what we see today was laid in the first 400,000 years. In fact, the first tenth of the first second of the Universe was filled with some of the most violent conditions the Universe has ever seen!

Learn about the Universe’s dramatic origins in this talk by Jaclyn Avidon from the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York, as part of NYC Parks’ Dark Nights, Bright Lights series. After the lecture, telescopes will be set up for observing on the rooftop (weather permitting). Guests are welcome to bring their own binoculars and telescopes and set them up alongside the experts.

The event is free and open to the public.
