    Alliance naturalists will introduce you to the natural history of Prospect Park and the Park's hidden trails. Recommended for families with children 5 and older.
  • Nature on the Go!, 1–2 pm
    Did you know 25 types of warblers stop at Prospect Park in May? Learn how to identify these cute and colorful birds on a bird walk. Participants will also create their own pair of binoculars and learn how to identify these colorful songbirds.
  • Nature’s Helpers, 2–3 pm
    Did you know that trees help trees? After learning how mulch protects tree roots, spend time spreading wood chips around trees.
  • Family Birdwatching, 3–4 pm
    After learning how to use binoculars, join our naturalists to identify some of the 250 species of birds that call Prospect Park home.

This spring, the Prospect Park Alliance introduces twice the Pop-Up Audubon fun with a second tent that explores the aquatic habitats of Prospect Park. In May, learn what trees and plants tell us about our environment.

  • Discovery Pack, 11 am–4 pm
    The Prospect Park Alliance invites you to get inspired by nature with our new Discovery Packs, a ready-to-go kits filled with nature activities for families. In May, monitor the development of plants that supply food and shelter for birds in Prospect Park.
  • Lakeside Nature Stroll, 12–1 pm
    Join Alliance naturalists for a guided nature walk through the meandering paths of the Peninsula and scout for plants that thrive in that unique environment.
  • Junior Naturalists, 1–2 pm
    Help Alliance naturalists track the growth of important plant species in this citizen science program.
  • Nature’s Helpers, 2–3 pm
    Let’s lend a helping hand to make our park a better place. Learn how mulch helps trees, spread wood chips or protect the environment by removing damaging litter.

Seeds are amazing little packages that move by rolling on the ground, flying through the air, floating in water or "hitching" a ride on passerby’s. We will take a hike to look for seeds in their many forms from acorns to pinecones to walnuts. Using our high-powered microscopes, we will then take a closer look to discover how these amazing seeds can move and grow into new flowers and trees.

This program is designed for ages 8 and up and their adult chaperones and is sponsored by Councilwoman Debi Rose. Meet at the Nevada Avenue entrance to High Rock Park. Registration required.

The Battery Conservancy seeks volunteers for maintenance of plant beds. Activities include raking, weeding, and planting; path maintenance; and other seasonally appropriate horticulture projects. Volunteers should be in good physical condition, and enjoy working outdoors. Basic horticulture skills are a plus, but not required. Get your hands dirty with The Battery Conservancy's Horticulture team! In its 25 acres, The Battery boasts 92,000 square feet of gardens, all designed by renowned Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf. Through preservation and the use of native plants, sustainable plant selections and growing methods, the Conservancy has made a strong commitment to environmental conservation.

Volunteer Description

The Battery Conservancy seeks volunteers for maintenance of plant beds. Activities include raking, weeding, and planting; path maintenance; and other seasonally appropriate horticulture projects. Volunteers should be in good physical condition, and enjoy working outdoors. Basic horticulture skills are a plus, but not required. Looking for gardening experience in one of New York City's most unique and dynamic downtown parks? Want to strengthen your foundation in horticultural practices and develop new skills? Get your hands dirty with The Battery Conservancy's Horticulture team! In its 25 acres, The Battery boasts 92,000 square feet of gardens, all designed by renowned Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf. Through preservation and the use of native plants, sustainable plant selections and growing methods, the Conservancy has made a strong commitment to environmental conservation.
