Our Urban Park Ranger hiking guides will introduce you to the hidden gems of New York CIty and places often off-limits to the general public. On Nature Exploration Hikes we will discover the plants and animals that inhabit the urban forest. Moderate hikes are longer, faster paced hikes on rugged terrain. For all hiking programs we recommend wearing comfortable shoes or boots, and packing water and a light snack.

Join us this summer at the Wyckoff farmhouse for a hands-on fermentation workshop. This workshop is part of a series of six workshops for adults (and teens) in what we’re calling “creative homesteading”. Get your hands dirty in the garden, experiment with natural dyes, learn about herbal medicine, preserve your harvest, and more at the oldest house in New York!

Smell, taste, discuss and make a few simple seasonal ferments. In this workshop we’ll explore and craft two delicious types of ferments that are easily made at home without any special ingredients or equipment: a sauerkraut (and its cousins) as well as various styles of sour cream. Depending on what’s in season there may be additional ferments to explore.

Advance (free) registration required. For more information and to register, please visit http://wyckoffmuseum.org/workshops.

Founders of historical dining collective Edible History lead a tour about oysters and their fascinating role in New York City’s own history.

New York City’s harbor was once home to the largest oyster beds in the world. While early Dutch settlers picked foot long oysters from the shores of Brooklyn and Manhattan, 18th and 19th century New Yorkers consumed them nearly to extinction. From a staple food of the poor to an haute delicacy, these tiny mollusks pack a serious history, Victoria Flexner and Ryan Mellinger from Edible History will guide you through it.
