Catch-and-release fishing is a great way to get outdoors and discover nature just a few blocks from home. Our experienced Rangers teach the ethics of fishing and the ecology of our waterways on every fishing program. Participation in a mandatory safety review lead by a trained Ranger is required. All equipment is provided. All fishing programs are catch-and-release only and most programs are first-come, first serve. Families and children ages 8 and years and older are welcome to participate in fishing programs.

There is much more to our ponds than what you see on the surface.

Explore the wetlands and learn about the life cycles of the pond along a short hike. Observe many of the pond’s residents in action: swimming, basking, diving, or even walking on water. Then we will return to the Education Building to examine pond life, water, and more under microscopes, a flex cam, and other lab equipment sponsored by the Northfield Foundation.

This program is designed for ages 8 and up and their adult chaperones, and is sponsored by Councilwoman Debi Rose.

Registration is required.

Projects are seasonal and vary from week to week, and could include weeding, mulching, trellising, path or fence maintenance, moving soil, or working with compost. Visit the Battery Urban Farm Community Programs page for exact dates and more information.

Saturday Open Volunteer Hours are for all ages, however volunteers under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Any volunteers under 18 must bring a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian.

All volunteers must wear closed-toed shoes and weather-appropriate clothing (boots if it has rained recently, layers in cool weather, a hat and sunscreen in the summer are strongly recommended). Please also bring a water bottle.

We will work in most weather, including light rain. Hiking is the ultimate way to enjoy the outdoors and reduce stress. Regardless of the intensity level, it is a great way to burn calories and stay fit.

On Nature Exploration Hikes we will discover the plants and animals that inhabit the urban forest.

Hiking programs feature intensity levels ranging from light, (a leisurely stroll on mostly paved paths), to moderate (longer, faster paced hikes on rugged terrain), to vigorous (long distance, with hills and rugged terrain). For all hiking programs we recommend wearing comfortable shoes or boots, and packing water and a light snack.

The signature annual event at Freshkills Park, Sneak 'Peak' is a festival unlike any other. The site is normally closed throughout the year as we continue park development and construction, but once a year we throw open the gates and hold a celebration! Join us to celebrate the potential of the future of Freshkills Park with a day of fun with activities like kayaking, biking, birding, public art, puppetry workshop, walking tours, climbing walls, an informational fair, and kite flying, all of which offer a glimpse of what the park will have to offer. Last year 3,500 people joined us for the celebration of Staten Island's newest jewel of parkland - this year promises to be bigger and better than ever!

Visit nyc.gov/sneakpeak to find out more! Parking for the festival will be available at 250 Wild Avenue, behind the Showplace Bowling Alley off of Victory Blvd. Free shuttles will run to the festival from the Staten Island Ferry, just hop off the ferry and on to a direct shuttle right to the celebration without any hassle! Alternatively, the s62 bus runs down Victory Blvd. to the park.
