Volunteers are vital to keeping Flushing Meadows Corona Park beautiful. But there is so much more to volunteerism than helping with park beautification. People that volunteer in a park such as Flushing Meadows generally live or work in the surrounding communities, and as such take pride in their neighborhood park. They are more likely to act as watchdogs for their park if they have participated in a cleanup, or flower and bulb planting. Volunteering instills a sense of stewardship and provides individuals with a great deal of satisfaction.
In addition to offering an opportunity for parks personnel to interact and bond with the community, volunteering is a great way to meet new people, learn about the environment and acquire a greater respect for city parks. Adults and children alike participate and experience a feeling of pride for a job well done. In fact, many private and public high schools throughout the five boroughs participate in the Flushing Meadows Corona Park volunteer program.
Throughout the year volunteers clean the shoreline of Meadow Lake, paint benches, rake leaves, pick up garbage, and plant flowers and bulbs.
