Repair Methods

The goal of the Trees & Sidewalks Program is to help homeowners repair sidewalks damaged by curbside trees while minimizing the impact of the sidewalk repair to the tree.

This is a pilot program run by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and funded by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and the Borough Presidents of Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx. Parks & Recreation has jurisdiction over the almost 500,000 street trees in New York City.

Eligibility

One-, two-, and three-family homes occupied by the owner (NYC Tax Class 1) whose sidewalks are affected by the roots of their curbside trees are eligible for this free program.

Call 311, (212) NEW-YORK, or (212) 504-4115 for TDD (Telecommunication Device for the Deaf) and ask for the Trees & Sidewalks Program. Parks & Recreation's inspectors will rate the damage and leave you with an inspection report.

Repair Timeframe

Repairs will be prioritized according to severity of sidewalk damage, what percentage of the sidewalk is impacted by the damage, and whether the sidewalk is in a high-traffic area. Homeowners who have time-sensitive needs for sidewalk repair may wish to fix their sidewalks themselves by obtaining a free permit from Parks & Recreation.
