Adopt-a-Greenstreet

for more information about    adopting a Greenstreet

Since 1996 the City of New York/Parks & Recreation has created over 2,000 street gardens citywide through a program called Greenstreets. Through this effort, the streetscape of America's largest city will be transformed into a vast network of green spaces. As part of this program, we are seeking private citizens, businesses, and corporations to join the City of New York and its communities as a partner in this municipal beautification program. As has been proven, partnerships between municipal entities, community organizations, and the private sector have contributed to revitalization of American cities.

The care and maintenance of the Greenstreet sites is essential. The Parks Department currently waters, weeds, and cleans these sites regularly. However, a partnership with private entities would help us provide a level of care for these sites and their surrounding communities beyond which Parks can provide alone.

As such, an Adopt-a-Greenstreet Program is being developed to aggressively solicit individual involvement and corporate sponsorship to diminish the burden of Greenstreets maintenance on boroughs resources. We are approaching this as a four-pronged effort.

• Grassroots. We are recruiting community groups, homeowners, individuals, and Friends of Parks to assume the care of a neighborhood Greenstreet. Workshops are currently being held in each of the five boroughs to recruit volunteers.

• Local businesses adoption. A business would agree to be responsible for a proximate Greenstreet. They could hire an outside contractor or care for it directly. Businesses are currently being identified by PIP inspectors and will be contacted this spring.

• Corporate sponsorship. A corporation would pay for the maintenance of many sites. Initial outreach has been made to specific corporations with urban development programs.

• Foundations and government grants. There is both private and public money available for Greenstreets maintenance and an Adopt-a-Greenstreet program. We are in the process of researching these grants.
