Rev. Benjamin Lowry Monument

This bronze portrait bust honors the Reverend Benjamin James Lowry (1891-198?), the long-time pastor of Zion Baptist Church, located at 523 Washington Avenue in the Prospect Heights section of Brooklyn.
The park where it is located, formerly known as Underhill Gore, and dating to 1877, was renamed by the City Council for Lowry in 1982. Robert Pugh, a Brooklyn-based monument artisan, crafted the sculpture and its black granite pedestal. Pugh also designed the Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial in Harlem. The monument to Lowry was unveiled in his presence on July 31, 1982, and is inscribed with Reverend Lowry’s own words:
“Life has taught me that there is no substitute for persistence and hard work. No matter how gifted or talented an individual, life does not guarantee him success. Successful and worthwhile lives come from consecration, dedication, persistence and faith in God.”
