  • Beaches Open!
    Saturday, May 25 to Monday, September 2, 2002
    New York City's seven beaches are officially open to the public beginning this Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day, September 2. They are open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM. Photograph of sandcastle for beach opening announcement
    Please note that there is no swimming without a lifeguard on duty.
    Fun fact: In 2001, 7.14 million people visited the City's 14 miles of sand and surf.

  • 2002 Big Blue Handball Championship
    June 15 and June 16, 2002
    Participate in Parks' free two-day Citywide Handball Tournament at a court near you! Finals will be held on Sunday, June 16 from 9am to 4pm at the North Meadow in Manhattan's Central Park.
    Advance registration is required. All entries must be received by Friday, May 31, 2002.

  • The Daffodil ProjectGraphic for The Daffodil Project, Links to Daffodil Project page
    In the fall of 2001, more than 10,000 people planted over 1.5 million daffodil bulbs to honor those lost in the September 11 attacks. A day of remembrance was held on Saturday, April 6, 2002 at parks and green spaces throughout the city.

  • 2002 Whitney Biennial
    Art in Parks
    March 7 through May 26, 2002
  • Parks, the Central Park Conservancy and the Public Art Fund proudly host the outdoor component of the 2002 Whitney Biennial. Works by five of the 113 artists selected for inclusion in this year's biennial are on display in Central Park.

  • Urban Park Ranger Explorer Programs
    Every weekend there's an Explorer Program in a park near you. Developed in conjunction with the National Geographic Society, these programs help you experience New York City's 28,000 acres of parkland as you never have before.

    Come visit one of our ten Urban Park Ranger Nature Centers. Each serves as an in-park community center for public education, recreational activities and environmental studies.

  • Tennis Courts
    Tennis for sport or fun is available to all New Yorkers with a tennis permit. Each borough has many tennis courts. The tennis season lasts from April until the end of November.

  • Baseball Fields
    Play ball on one of the hundreds of baseball fields throughout the city. Free baseball instruction is offered in the spring. There are also privately-run recreation leagues available for different professional and community groups.
