Afterschool:
Working with Parks & Recreation Afterschool programs, RECYouth provides free digital video and audio instruction to youth ages 6-13. The curriculum focuses having fun while learning to create short narrative and documentary videos, soundtracks and songs.
Teen programs:
RECYouth’s
after school and summer teen programs are free for youth ages 14-19.
RECYouth’s Video Production curriculum is centered on technical
training in camera operation, sound production and Final Cut Pro and
iMovie editing, with a foundation in research, writing and storyboarding.
All projects, from fictional narrative to experimental documentary,
strong technical vocabulary and an outlet for creative expression. Students
are encouraged to collaborate through team-building activities and sharing
responsibilities. During our Afterschool and summer programs, youth
rotate jobs, learning how to direct, shoot, mic and edit, ensuring experience
with all aspects of production. Upon completion, RECYouth-produced work
is featured at public screening events and submitted to festivals and
for television broadcast.
Through our Audio Production programs, RECYouth participants are encouraged
to express themselves through words and music. Teaching artists provide
hands-on instruction in sound recording, songwriting, and mixing so
that our youth can create new music, spoken word and audio documentary.
Internships:
RECYouth provides internship opportunities for young people who wish to continue learning. Together with Parks & Recreation Computer Resource Center coordinators, RECYouth program graduates are now co-teaching video and audio production to children in Parks Afterschool programs and to their peers in our teen programs. Teens can also join the RECYouth Press Corps, a full-scale production team that creates PSAs and other promotional videos for the Parks Department. Many of our graduates continue to study film/video and audio production beyond their RECYouth experience.
